On The Rocks Arts Festival, part of the University of St Andrews Students’ Association, returns for its 3rd year, taking over St Andrews from 17th – 24th of April with comedy, music, drama, poetry, photography, cabaret, puppets and maybe even some juggling. It’s meant to be over 8 days but we have so much this year it’s spilled over and we have previews and special performances on Saturday 16th April too.

Some welcome faces return to On The Rocks: A Waste of Paint productions are back in the Byre with a tale for children about a disheartened snail; the team behind last year’s production of The Libertine are back with a large scale version of Peter Pan; and Not Cricket Productions, who brought a beautiful version of the Tempest to last year’s festival return with another site specific piece, this time an unusual production of Jane Eyre in Younger Hall.

During On The Rocks we don’t just want

you to observe great performances, we want to let you get involved and get your hands dirty. There are lots of workshops in all sorts of different art forms. Learn how to play with puppets, play jazz, improve your directing skills, join in an open-mic comedy night, get to the heart of acting, or even some tips about playing chamber music. We’ve managed to get the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Brass Jaw, Sunlight Productions and the World Saxophone Congress all in the same place in the same week just for you, so come along and take part! To top things off, there’s a day of collaboration between the renowned musicians of the Fence Collective, alongside new folk in the spectacular King James Library.

Half Cut, the Scottish Student film festival, has events happening throughout the week including a talk about film making by the festival judges, Pixar Animations. The film festival culminates in the awards evening, held in

the cinema on Wednesday. We’re already dusting down the red carpet for what promises to be a star spangled event.

Our Youth Theatre project is back with a special performance of Alice in Wonderland in St Andrews Castle, devised by the cast and always a highlight of the festival. There’s also Peter Pan, puppetry in The Byre, and fun and games at the Seaside Fayre. Everything you could want for a family day out!

There’s loads more happening throughout the week. Thanks to the generous support of Fife Council we can still offer almost every event for five pounds or less, meaning there’s no excuse not to go and see everything and anything you want to. So find yourself a comfy sofa and a cup of tea, have a look through the programme and take a chance on something new. Most of all, I hope you enjoy this festival as much as we’ve enjoyed putting it together!

Whilst Scottish Student Film has burgeoned in recent years, the industry has always lacked

a widely recognised forum through which to showcase their works to the general public and

industry moguls. Half Cut therefore aims to help legitimise student film, and give professionals the

chance to see up-and-coming talent.

All films submitted are watched by our Selection Committee, who then nominate a choice of

films to go through to the awards evening. Those which are not chosen initially are automatically

entered in the People’s Choice evening, where fellow students watch and vote for their 2

favourite films, and these are then added to the screening for the awards evening.

This year, we welcome a distinguished panel of judges, including 2 animators from Pixar

Animation Studios, California, and BAFTA-award winner and judge Robert Sproul-Cran, who has

been involved in the film industry for over 30 years.

Now part of On The Rocks for the third year, the Half Cut Film Festival has seen gritty drama,

musicals in miniature, ninjas on swings, claymation and full lobster costumes. This year

will be no exception - join us again in 2011 for a truly star-spangled, red-carpeted evening.

Every year in the UK councils spend millions of pounds on graffiti removal. This exhibition

follows the ever-changing walls of a few London hot spots and offers an appreciative look at the art

of vandalism... just in case the government cuts continue.

Feminist Art ExhibitionMilena T V Wrangel

All week, The Byre TheatreAn exhibit centred around challenging and

reworking existing notions of gender and the term ‘feminism.’ The exhibit includes artworks

based on issues discussed during feminist society ‘theory working group’ meetings (on

topics such as Postfeminism, Effeminacy, Relationships and Violence), as well as more

general artworks on ideas of sex/gender made by St. Andrews students.

Perception of Layers/Layers of PerceptionShona Mackay

All week (daytime), The Byre TheatreA short film which explores the idea of self and

image. Through the eyes of the mirror we see how perspective can deceive, reflect or distract from

what may or may not be the subject’s natural state of being.

Happenings in the St Andrews Scene - Francesca Altemura

All week - The Students’ UnionGoal: do epic things and have a kick-ass time.

Francesca has gathered together a group of students to create wild and unexpected tiny

events around St Andrews. There will be a team of intrepid photographers to capture these mini

happenings. Any camera, any lighting, any exposure, any place.

Lucy RobertsonThroughout April, The Byre Theatre

Lucy is a textile student and has exhibited throughout Fife. On The Rocks displays some of

her paintings of puffins and boats.

GEOPIX - Fife’s Rock Art - Richard BatchelorThroughout April, The Byre Theatre

This photographic exhibition displays the varied forms, colours, textures and contrasts of the rich

variety of rocks which occur in Fife. These images formed part of a photographic competition

organised by geoHeritage Fife and sponsored by Fife Council in 2010.

The Young, The Beautiful and The Dead - Daisy Dundee

All week, Taste Coffee ShopDaisy Dundee is a well-known live music

photographer and friend of bands. Following on from the success of Daisy’s debut exhibition held

in Dundee in October, this exhibtion includes pictures of The View, The Law, The Mirror Trap,

Pete Docherty, Nick Cave and Goldfrapp.

Diana Johnston (poetry)All week, The Barron Theatre

Diana’s poems deal with the struggle of the artist; the most internal issue of passion, love and the

confusion between reality and imagination.

Noc-tam-bu-listVenue TBC

‘Noc-tam-bu-list’ is a multi-disciplinary event bringing artists, writers and musicians together

from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dublin & St. Andrews. The exhibition will be available to view

throughout the ‘On the Rocks’ festival, with the opening and closing nights hosting an array of

poetry, music and experimental film and sound.

”The plays are devised by the cast around a well known story, and this year the tale is the much loved classic, Alice in Wonderland. The cast are involved in all aspects of the production, from the costumes, to making props and creating some of the music. They also have workshops in other theatre techniques such as dance, movement and stage combat.

This year, alongside the main production, we will be running some half-day workshops for younger children, age 5 – 8yrs, in collaboration with MUSA, the University museum. These will be on different art forms including art, music, and theatre and will be based around the same theme of Alice in Wonderland. As this programme goes to print, the full details are yet to be confirmed, but they will be advertised soon so keep a look out for the posters, or have a look at our website, www.ontherocksfestival.com

The On The Rocks Youth Theatre project is held over 2 weeks in the Easter Holidays, and culminates in an outdoor performance in St Andrews Castle during the festival. It’s open to children between 9 – 18 years old and is led by professional theatre practitioner, Clare McGary. In past years, the project has performed sell-out productions of Peter Pan and created their very own fairy tales.

Saxophone Quartet


Formed at the start of the academic year, the University of St Andrews Saxophone Quartet has quickly established itself as one of the foremost chamber groups at the University. They play everything from classical to jazz to pop music, and will present a typically eclectic selection of music. MUSIC

On The Rocks turns Venue 1 into a dark and glamorous cabaret club. With music by the Black Cat Jook band, exotic dancers, and astounding magicians, you’ll be safe in the more than capable hands of our fabulous compere, Desdimona De Vil.

A showcase of fiction and poetry by eight of Scotland’s most promising young writers. Chosen as the Scottish Book Trust’s “New Writers 2010”, Krystelle Bamford, Jane Flett, Roy Gill, Barry Gornell, Kirsty Logan, Garry MacKenzie, Ishy MacLean, Niall O’Gallagher, Allan Radcliffe and Katerina Vasiliou, have won and been shortlisted for various prizes including the Sceptre Prize and the Robert McLellan Poetry Award.

Landscapes in Motion

The Snail Who Lost His Trail


Waste of Paint ProductionsCornelius the snail didn’t know quite where he was going, or quite where he’d been. One day he discovered something that made him realise it was the inbetween that mattered, not the beginning or even the end of the journey. Waste of Paint created Rabbits Ladders & Stars in Jars for On The Rocks 2010 and are now back with another magical tale told using puppets and live music. Followed by a 30 minute workshop. 2 yrs +

The bright, energetic score drives fast from the onset of the campaign to the voting booth. It is Hairspray meets You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown meets Election. Substance disguised as cuteness. All heart disguised as satire. This is a script in hand performance.

Robinson


The premiere of Robinson features soloists Colin Steele (trumpet) and John Kenny (trombone) and narrators Chrys Salt and Ryan Van Winkle, along with University ensembles Jazz Studio and Ensemble 2021. Brian Johnstone’s narrative poem relates what may have happened to the writer Weldon Kees after he jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco in July 1955... Richard Ingham’s new score combines jazz and contemporary music in a tense voyage of rumour, imagination, guesswork, mystery.

Blind Mirth 3D


Blind Mirth, St. Andrews’ oldest and best Improv Comedy group presents a night of Improv and Sketch Comedy. Sketches will be original material, never to be seen again in this world or the next. Always provocative, this year’s Improvised Comedy is guaranteed* to have audience suggestions, live music, and dragons. Age 18yrs +*Guaranteed is a nuanced word. There are many different interpretations.

Sunlight ProductionsHow can a director interpret scripts, design concepts, approach casting and the rehearsal process? This workshop will address all these issues. Attention will be paid to how to move from page to stage and sustain effective communication with actors. Participants will learn valuable skills in actioning a script, creating dramatic form and structure.

BandStAnd in the Bandstand

BandStAnd have been putting on excellent gigs in the Barron for a few years with fantastic musicians such as Pictish Trail, Kid Canaveral, and Francois and the Atlas Mountains. For On The Rocks, they have moved out of the Barron and into the Bandstand for a few hours of brilliant, laid back music. Grab a blanket, get an ice cream and while away a sunny Sunday afternoon. St Andrews Ethnic & Interpretive Dance SocietyEidSoc is proud to present ‘Around the World of Dance’, a collaborative effort involving dancers from many different genres and nationalities. This show will bring together different types of dance that are not normally joined in one performance. On The Rocks closes in traditional style with a foot stomping ceilidh hosted by the excellent Kinnaird Ceilidh Band, in the magnificent surroundings of the St Andrews Castle. Fetch your tartan and your dancin’ shoes: this promises to be a truly magical end to a great festival.
