The front cover of our last digital issue of “On the tee” for 2010 has an accurate byline: “Picture Perfect Season.” From an event perspective, this is true, with classy winners featured in Steve Stricker at the John Deere Classic and Nick Price at the Principal Charity Classic along with our Iowa representative on the PGA tour and Ryder Cup player, Zach Johnson. However, combine the brutal weather across Iowa and the fall of Tiger Woods and this was a bitter sweet 2010 golf season. “On the Tee” has dozens of wonderful golf course partners across Iowa “from the Missouri to the Mississippi” and to a course they each had very tough seasons battling the third-worst summer on record as rain ravaged the entire state for most of the peak months for golf in our great state. This unfortunately has had an incredibly harsh impact on the financial stability of many tracks across the state. This lack of available days to capture the golfers’ revenue has the obvious impact on the retailers and manufacturers as well and the losses have mounted in that sector of the golf economy as well. The ability or lack thereof to play the great game would naturally drive eyeballs to the TV sets watching the big boys of the PGA play but that segment of the TV audience dropped as well when Tiger cut back his events to get his personal life in order and the rust on his game dropped him off the leaderboards when he did play. These issues, weather and Woods, have had tremendous ramifications on the state of the game of golf across Iowa and America. I am an optimist who has battled small business obstacles for years and will stay positive about this incredible game that has lasted centuries but as golf fans and players we need to support the game and

courses. This fall is the perfect time to make a statement as we await the start of the 38th Ryder Cup and the weather across the state is spectacular. I implore you to make a concerted effort to support the golf courses until the snow flies and make the Ryder Cup appointment TV in the heart of football season. The golf courses need the revenue that they lost this summer and the ratings will inspire corporate America to continue to sponsor the PGA. I am certain that most Iowans, casual sports and golf fans, will turn the Ryder Cup on the catch a glimpse of our favorite son Zach Johnson from Cedar Rapids, Iowa along with the two-time winner of the John Deere Classic Steve Stricker the Wisconsin native—both great individuals. It’s fabulous that two of our “On the Tee” cover boys in 2010 are representing the USA in Wales. The amazing thing to me is the fact that both these world class golfers hale from northern states in a predominantly southern based sport at the PGA level. In closing our last issue and inaugural season of the “On the Tee” digital magazine I thank you for your support and viewership of our “On the Tee” multi-media mix of TV, Radio, print, and now digital magazine. The radio show is year round and available in all 99 counties on the Iowa Sports

Zach Johnson finished 3rd at the PGA Championships August 15. It was the best finish by an Iowan in the history of the event. Corey Pavin, captain of the United States Ryder Cup Team must have been impressed. He would later select Johnson to join the team.

After coming up short the previous two years, Nick Price finally claimed the Principal Charity Classic title in 2010. The event awared $620,000 to area charities.

Zach Johnson did Iowa proud August 13 at the 92nd PGA Championship in Kohler, Wisconsin. Not only that, but he did it in a way no golfer from Iowa ever had before him by finishing in a tie for third. It was the highest finish at the PGA Championship ever by an Iowan golfer. German Martin Kaymer took home the trophy and, what most non-Iowans will remember about the event, Dustin Johnson got caught up in a little controversy over what he did not realize to be a bunker. But to Iowans, this edition of the PGA Championships will be remembered for Zach Johnson’s spectacular outing. It was his second-best career finish in a major. Earlier this year, Johnson won the Crowne Plaza Invite and, of course, was the 2007 Masters Champion.

Tim Weideman EditorJohnson’s 3rd Place at PGA Championships Best for an Iowan

Johnson hit the ball with great consistency all four days of the event, shooting a 69-70-69 and wrapping up the final day with a 2-under 70, finishing with a total 10-under and in a tie for third place with Rory McIlroy.

Now, Johnson will turn his focus on his two tournaments that are left before U.S. captain Corey Pavin selects who will be the remaining four members for the U.S. team at the Ryder Cup on September 7. Eight spots have already been taken.

The Other Johnson’s Mistake

Dustin Johnson had a one-stroke lead playing the 18th hole when his ball landed in a tiny patch

of sand. Little did Johnson know, that small patch of sand was actually one of the many miniature bunkers that mark the course at Whistling Straits. Johnson, thinking the pocket of sand was grass that had been trampled by the crowd, grounded his club and sealed his fate. The

two-stroke penalty along with a missed putt, sent Johnson backwards to a tie for 5th place.

Johnson Selected for Ryder Cup Missouri Valley Conference Press Release

Ending months of speculation, Team USA Captain Corey Pavin completed his 12-man Ryder Cup team on Tuesday morning by selecting Johnson along with Tiger Woods, Stewart Cink, and Rickie Fowler with his four captain’s picks. “I am very pleased to add these four to Team USA,” Pavin said. “I think our team is very good. I think these four players complement those eight very well. That was the goal of these four players. Johnson, who qualified for the 2006 team that traveled to The K Club in Straffan, Ireland, said he is “thrilled and excited to be on the team.” “Team play, team sports in general, it’s really something that drives me as a competitor and when you incorporate a team element and chemistry into golf, it makes it just that much more special,” said Johnson, who went 1-2-1 in his Ryder Cup debut .

Zach Johnson launchees the ball out of a bunker at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio.

The annual tournament that brings Iowa’s top professional and amateur golfers together was held Aug. 20-22 at Lake Panorama National (LPN) near Panora. The Brokers International Ltd. Iowa Open drew 108 players to the course that previously hosted the tournament from 1985 to 1998.Zack Vervaecke of Grimes, head golf

professional at Jester Park Golf Course near Granger, won the tournament with a three-day total of 205. Vervaecke shot 66 the first and third days, with a 73 the second day. He earned a $7,000 check for the win.Vervaecke finished fifth in the 2008 Iowa

Open. “I was about as nervous today as I’ve ever been playing golf,” he said, following an awards presentation on the LPN 18th green. “I’ve never been a part of anything like this. Everyone connected with the tournament – the spectators, the volunteers, the other players – has been wonderful.”Second place went to Sean McCarty, head

pro at Brown Deer Golf Club in Coralville. McCarty was two strokes behind Vervaecke, and won $4,800.Jerry Smith, who has earned $2.3 million as

a professional golfer since 1987, took home $3,000 for third place with a score of 208. He won another $1,500 with the low score of 63 in the pro-am tournament.

Luke Joy was the low amateur, finishing in a tie for sixth place with a three-day total of 210. Joy, of Dorset, England, was a member of the Drake University men’s golf team before graduating last spring.Mark Rohde of Marshalltown won

the senior division with a final score of 214, earning a $2,258 check. The addition in 2010 of a senior division was one of the new enhancements for this annual tournament.Prize money increased significantly

with Brokers International Ltd. as the title sponsor. The total purse for the open division was $37,575, with more than $7,000 awarded in the senior division.A contract between the Iowa

Section PGA and Brokers International Ltd. signed in July 2009 brings the tournament to Lake Panorama National for at least five years. Ltd. Iowa Open even bigger and better. “Everyone is having so much fun with this,” McCarty said. “The Iowa Open is back where it belongs — Lake Panorama National.” John Dinnebier, LPN general manager and director of golf, serves on the Iowa Section PGA board of directors. He said the increase in prize money enticed more players to participate in the year’s tour-nament. “Last year there were about 80 players in the tournament. We are excited the Iowa Open has returned to Lake PanoramaNa-tional, and grateful to Brokers International for helping us bring it here,” he said. Dinnebier, who played in the three-day tournament in addition to handling his LPN general manager duties, finished in 15th place, just 10 strokes off the lead. Many new things took place in 2010. One was players being introduced each morning as they teed off, and as they arrived on the 18th green during the final round. Coolers filled with fruit and water were scattered around the course for the players. Housing was available in private homes. Two special events were held for players’ spouses – a pool party at Prairie View Bed and Breakfast and a pontoon boat ride on Lake Panorama.

Signs listing all the Iowa Open champions since the tournament began in 1927 were posted along the cart path leading to the first tee. More than 150 volunteers assisted players and spectators throughout the tournament. LeRoy Oxley of Panora served as tournament director. “I heard lots of positive comments throughout the tournament,” Oxley said. “The pros were very complimentary of the course conditions and the help provided by the volunteers. With the increased prize money, the spectators, the whole atmo-sphere, they said it was like a mini-tour event.” A pro-am tournament Aug. 19 generated plenty of interest with 31 teams competing. A “draw party” was held at Lake Panorama’s Boulder Beach, as names of 31 pros were drawn to match with the amateur teams. All pros received an appearance fee. Besides Broker International Ltd., five ad-ditional corporate sponsors each committed

$5,000 to help cover tourna-ment expenses. Those were Allianz, American Equity, Aviva, Menadue Development, which owns The Port and Lakeside Inn on Lake Panorama, and People’s Trust and Savings Bank. Sun Mountain Sports was the putting green sponsor and Golf TEC sponsored the driving range. Another 28 businesses paid a $200 fee or committed to in-kind contribu-tions matching that amount to become hole sponsors.

Troy Christensen, executive director of the Iowa Section PGA, praised the LPN staff and local volunteers, calling the tournament a “phenomenal event. In my 12 years of work-ing for the Iowa Section PGA, I’ve never seen a community come together like this to sup-port a tournament,” he said. “Everyone here has done a wonderful job.” The 144-player field is open to profession-als and amateurs who were born in Iowa, as well as golfers with Iowa ties. Tournament director Oxley said he hopes so many players register for the 2011 tournament that qualify-ing rounds are needed.

After losing his 36-hole lead in each of the past two Principal Charity Classic’s, Nick Price vowed to himself that this time would be different, and it was. Price, who again was the 36-hole leader with Tommy Armour III, pulled away with a 4-under-par 67 on Sunday to claim the winner’s spot by four strokes over Armour, who had an even-par 71 for his final round. Price’s 54-hole total was 14 under 199. John Cook and Loren Roberts tied for third place at 9 under par. “I did all the right things today,” said Price. “The chip-in on hole 6 was significant and I made a lot of 6-footers today. My driving really set me up and I really played solid. I didn’t doubt myself today. I feel that if I play well now, there’s no excuse for me not to win. I am thrilled.”

Steve Stricker broke the tournament scoring record by a whopping four shots en route to successfully defending his John Deere Classic title Sunday, July 11, at TPC Deere Run.Now he’s looking forward to a three-peat.“Anytime you can win three times in a row

would be great,” Stricker said. “You know, it’s a long ways away. We’ve got a year to go, but it would be fun to come back and try.”Stricker’s 26-under

par total was enough to defeat fellow PGA TOUR veteran Paul Goydos, who finished two shots back at 24-under.Goydos made golf

history in the first round when he became only the fourth player in TOUR history to shoot 59.Like Stricker, Goydos’ final score also broke

the previous tournament record of 22-under set by J.P. Hayes in 2002. Hayes won that tournament.Goydos, 46, accepted the exemption to the

The native and resident of Wisconsin and University of Illinois alumnus shot rounds of 60-66-62-70 en route to the 26-under total of 258. Stricker recorded 31 birdies, which ties him for second on the all-time list for birdies in a 72-hole event with John Huston and Phil Mickelson.Stricker set the PGA TOUR’s 54-hole scoring

Former Cyclone Leads Hawkeye Golf Mark Hankins is in his third season as head men’s golf coach at the University of Iowa. Hankins took over in 2007 after spending seven years as the head coach at Michigan State University. The Hawkeyes have moved from 155th to 54th in the Golfweek Rankings since Hankins has taken over the program. Without a tournament title since the 2004 Hawkeye Intercollegiate, Iowa picked up a win at the 2008 Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, NC. The Hawkeyes also placed sixth in the 2009 Big Ten Championships, their best finish in eight years. Furthermore, Hankins coached the Black and Gold to a fifth place finish at the 2009 Southeast Regionals and a 17th place finish at the NCAA Championships in Toledo, OH; marking the first time the Hawkeyes have qualified for the championships since 1995. Hankins worked a total of three years as an assistant coach for men and women, and co-head

coach of the men’s golf program at his alma mater, Iowa State University. From 1995-1997 he worked as co-head coach for the Cyclones. During this time, Iowa State advanced to two NCAA regional berths and won three tournament titles. In his final season at Iowa State, the Cyclones broke every existing team record, individual scoring average, tournament wins and NCAA Regional finish. During his playing career, Hankins earned all-Big Eight Conference honors his senior season at Iowa State (1993). His personal best round of 66 set a Cyclone individual scoring record. A three-time academic all-Big Eight honoree (1988, 1991 and 1993), Hankins was also named an academic all-American as a senior.

Junior Brad Hopfinger led the Hawkeyes with a

54-hole score of 209 (-1), earning him a share of

An even DOZEN Ws for OdysseyThis was Odyssey’s 12th win of the

(And I’d kill for a chocolate frosted one of those right now.)The flat stick was the differenceThe winner was not the longest guy

in the field—he tied for 57th in driving distance—but he tied for 4th in putts per round (27.3) and tied for 4th in putts per GIR (1.633) with his White Hot XG #7 Long putter. Likewise, the 2nd place finisher ranked

50th in driving distance this week, but led the field in putts per round (26.5) and was 6th best in putts per GIR, averaging 1.646. J.J. Henry was the top Callaway Staffer,

finishing tied for 24th in Toronto, which I’ve never been to. (I have, however, been to Montreal and that is a very lively city. Quite cultural.) OK, on to the notes…. Notes Odyssey Putter wins the Senior Open title,

Grand View University athletics added another notch on its belt with the success of its men’s golf team during the 2009-10 season. Viking athletic teams won the Midwest Collegiate Conference Commissioner’s Cup, an award that honors all-around athletic excellence in MCC sports. The Commissioner’s Cup is awarded to the institution with the highest cumulative score as determined by a scoring method used by the league. Points were awarded based on the school’s finish after completion of each of the sports sponsored by the MCC.Grand View won four MCC championships and qualified individuals and teams from 11 of its athletic programs for National Championships this year. This includes the men’s golf team that continues to move up the ranks as one of the top programs in the NAIA. Grand View Head Coach and PGA Professional Chris Winkel, in his sixth season at Grand View, restarted the Grand View men’s and women’s golf programs in 2003 after a ten-year hiatus. Coach Winkel led the men’s program to immediate success as the Vikings qualified for the NAIA National Championships in 2004. He was the MCC Men’s Golf Coach of the Year in 2004 and in 2010. Winkel continues to recruit talented student-athletes to his program, both locally and from abroad. This year’s top golfer, and perhaps the most accomplished player in GV men’s golf history, is sophomore Josh Manske of Algona. Manske is not only Grand View’s top golfer, he was the top golfer in the MCC this year, as well as one of the top golfers in the NAIA. Manske has worked hard in the off-season, and competes in many tournaments in the summer. Last summer, Manske won the 88th Northwest Amateur, one of Iowa’s most prestigious tournaments. He became the youngest player ever to win the Northwest Amateur. The Vikings’ No. 2 golfer, Graeme Molloy, hails from Glasgow, Scotland. In addition to several central Iowa players, the roster includes kids from South Africa and

England. The team completed its fall of 2009 season with three first place finishes and one second place finish and went 7-0 against top 25 teams. The team was recognized for its outstanding play in the fall by GolfStat. Golfstat, the official source for golf scores and statistics, ranked the Vikings first in the NAIA Head-to-Head Standings. The ranking marked Grand View’s first top ranking in the school’s history. The Golf World/Nike Golf men’s coaches’ poll also took notice of the Vikings great play ranked the Vikings as its No. 9 team in the NAIA. The fall season was filled with achievements and accolades for Grand View and the team carried that with them into the spring season. The Vikings were ranked No. 8 in the NAIA Preseason Men’s Golf Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. Grand View remained ranked in every NAIA spring poll. The Vikings won three meets in the spring, including it’s first-ever Midwest Collegiate Conference title. In exciting fashion, it came down to play the very last hole of the two-day event to determine the winner. The Vikings finished with a three-round team score of 859 (292-281-286) just ahead of nationally ranked powerhouse St. Ambrose, who finished with a score of 868 (292-289-287). Manske was medalist with a three round score of 206 (69-67-70) and Molloy was runner-up with a 209 (74-67-68). Both received MCC All-Tournament Team honors. Both Manske and Molloy were named to the MCC All-Conference First Team. With the win came an automatic berth to the NAIA Men’s Golf Championships held May 19-22 at TPC Deere Run Golf Course in Silvis, Illinois. Grand View had a strong first round for sixth place after day one of the event. The Vikings struggled on day two and dropped to 16th place,

but rebounded for a phenomenal performance in the third round. GV shot a 291 on day three to vault to fifth place. It was the lowest round of the day, and matched the lowest round scored by any team at the tournament to that point. The Vikings were solid again on the final day with a team score of 302 to give the team the sixth best overall score at the Championships and the highest finish in program history. Two Grand View players finished

in the top 20 of the individual standings. Junior Rick Fee (Phoenix, Ariz.) placed 11th overall with a four-day score of 294 (77-74-71-72) and Manske finished 14th (69-78-72-77). Both Fee and Manske were named to the All-Tournament team, an honor given to the top 16 individuals. Freshman Aaron Ahrendsen (Manning, Iowa) had an impressive showing at the championships. Ahrendsen tied for 38th place with a 303 (74-81-79-78). Molloy completed his career by shooting his lowest round of the tourney today and finished tied for 69th place (77-80-80-75). Sophomore Yousaf Khan (Surrey, England) matched his tournament low round today with a 78 and ended up tied for 83rd (80-81-78-78). Following the championship, Grand View’s Manske was named to the NAIA PING All-American Team. “I am really proud of this team and what they have accomplished this year. This is a very special team and has been a very rewarding season,” said Coach Winkel. The Vikings return four of its top five that played in the national tournament in May with the graduation of Rick Fee. Grand View expects to be a national contender again in 2010-11.

On the Tee Conversation: Kelly Tilghman - The Golf Channel

Mike Rickord and Judd Gibb of the “On the Tee Radio Show” welcomed “The Golf Channel’s” Kelly Tilghman for her debut on the Hack Nation’s favorite radio program. The three chatted about Ryder Cup Team U.S.A. captain Corey Pavin’s announcing the addition of Zach Johnson and the team’s chances against a very confident European team.

Mike Rickord: It’s not all just about elitist golf unless we have someone like this on so, please, raise the bar for this next ten minutes, both of ya, as Kelly Tilghman from “The Golf Channel” is kind enough to join us in the middle of our spat. Good evening, Kelly, and thank you very much for joining us “On the Tee” this Wednesday night.Kelly Tilghman: What am I walking into guys? Good to be with you.MR: Oh, you don’t want to know, dear. The rest of the guys can tell you. We have weekly squabbles. The name of the show is “On the Tee,” Two pros and a hack, I’m the resident hack and most of our audience is the Hack Nation. I guess the number one question they’d ask you, if they were in your hometown, the Hack Nation has to be at the Hambuger Heaven, isn’t it, to eat?KT: Yeah, it certainly is. It’s located just a couple blocks from my mom’s house. It’s a great little spot if you’ve had a burger there. If you haven’t you definitely need to have one.

MR: Well as I was going through some history I really enjoyed the little piece they had on bunker travel in Myrtle Beach in “Golf World” they had on you a few weeks ago and, at that time, I knew you’d gone up in the golf business but I didn’t realize, what a cool name of your family’s golf course back in the day, Gator Hole. Is that the name of it?KT: Yeah, and there literally was a gator on the 18th hole. And that was as simple as that. It was how they named it. It was hilarious. I was about eight years old when the golf course was being built, so I watched it dredged up from ground zero, basically, and it was just amazing to see the progress. And I remember most of it, even though I was really young, riding around with my dad in a Jeep looking at all the dirt turned into beautiful turf and I spent the better part of 20 years practicing there and playing golf.Judd Gibb: Well, Kelly, this last week getting ready for the big announcement, the Ryder Cup, here in the state of Iowa, we were glued to “The Golf Channel” waiting for Captain Pavin, we were really hoping he was going to say, “Zach Johnson,” but we weren’t for sure but we couldn’t be happier to have Zach back on that Ryder Cup team and representing the good ol’ U.S. of A.KT: Yeah, I saw he was the “play in” for Tom Lehman back in 2006. He didn’t bring home a winning record, but still, I think Lehman was really impressed with what (Johnson) brought

to the team and, of course, Lehman is the vice captain now and a contributor to Corey Pavin. You know, I’m sure he had a lot to say in that I’m sure and I just think this is a really, really good team in so many ways and camaraderie leads the way. There’s a lot of good guys on this golf club, or this Ryder Cup team.JG: Well, absolutely and getting back a little bit to Zach, one thing in the singles match that year in Ireland he plays Darren Clarke, you know, and that was not too long after his wife had passed away, and you know, Zach had his hands full that day. So, yeah, he didn’t play on a winning team, but he certainly played on the team.KT: Yeah, not a lot of Americans can say they have played on a winning team. That’s kind of the way it is, lately. I think Europe has claimed eight of the last 12 Ryder Cups. But, with that said, they do hold the Cup with a win at home last time and I think they carry a lot of confidence coming into this one. And you know, I think because there’s been question marks surrounding Tiger and his play and his dedication to the Ryder Cup, which actually baffles him because he feels he is or at least says he is dedicated but others question it, they won this one without him last time. Having him there is only a bonus in their eyes, I’m sure of it.
