The fishing is good just ask area

    anglers.

Bluegill fishing in our lakes is as good

as weve ever seen it, said Jed Pearson, an

    Indiana Department of Natural Resources

fisheries biologist. In addition, the DNR

said since the 1980s bass numbers have

doubled in Indiana natural lakes due to the

14-inch minimum limit on the size of bass

that can be taken home by anglers.

An Indiana fishing license costs $17 and

is only $3 for a senior citizen. Those born

before April 1, 1943, dont need a license,

    though state authorities recommend they

carry a drivers license to prove their

    eligibility.

Fishing is free for children 18 years old

and younger, those serving in full-timemilitary service and those fishing public

waters from farmland they own or lease.

Other stipulations and various types of

licenses available are listed in the free state

    fishing guide or online at

    in.gov/dnr/fishwild.

Licenses are sold at bait shops, big box

    stores and other retailers throughout

northeastern Indiana and are also available

    online at indianaoutdoor.in.gov. They can

be obtained by mail at DNR Customer

Service Center, 402 W. Washington St.,

    W160, Indianapolis IN 46204.

    Proceeds from the licenses valid

through March 31, 2012 are used to

conserve and manage fisheries resources in

    Indiana.

Most species can be fished year round,

though there are daily bag limits set by the

    Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

There is no limit on the number of bluegill

that can be pulled from Indianas public

water, though only 25 of their cousins, the

redear sunfish, can be caught daily. The

limit for crappie, commonly caught in the

    springtime, is also 25.

The bag limit for northern pike is three,

and those who catch the rare muskellunge,or muskie, may keep only one a day.

Lake sturgeon are off limits, as are other

    state-endangered fish.

There is no limit for catfish found in

streams, such as the channel cats and blue

flathead, but if they are caught in a lake,

only 10 can be kept. One can bag as many

    YOU LOVE YOUR

    SCREEN PORCH

    BUT...YOU HATE YOUR

SCREEN PORCHSo you have this love hate relationship with your

screen porch. You love the outdoor sights, sounds

and smells, but you hate the mess. In the spring

and summer, your furniture and carpet get wet

and dirty. The wind blows the newspaper out of

your hands. In the fall and winter, its cold out

there where you love to be and you have to shovel

the snow out and cover the furniture or haul it to

the attic. Or you get the plastic and staple gun out

and build a temporary barrier. Maybe you have

Plexiglas that you put up. Either way, if there is

a nice day, youre stuck, because either way you

have to wait until spring to take it all down again.

Wouldnt it be great if you could make better use

of that space? Its a great, relaxing place to hang

out, that is as long as the temperature is perfect,

the wind isnt blowing too hard and its not raining

    or snowing.

    With the Eze-Breeze

    sliding panels, you

    can have the best of

    both worlds. You can

    continue to love the

    outdoor feeling that

your screen roomgives you. But now you

    control the outdoor

    elements, they dont

    control you.

Eze-Breeze sliding panels are custom made

to fit the existing openings in your screen porch.

They transform your screen porch into a three

season room that can be completely closed,

opened to give you 75% of your original screen

    area, or anywhere in between.

All you have to do is call for a free in home esti-

mate or visit our web site. We will not take more than 20 minutes of your time. That 20 minutes

could be the best investment of time you have

spent since you purchased your home.

melange that uses fresh-squeezed lemonjuice. To add flavor, I throw the lemons inwith the veggies and let them char up a bit.Of course, they get removed once the dish isplated. Its that smoky lemon flavor youre

trying to impart.Thats kind of whats going on with thegrilled drinks. You are grilling the mainsource of your juice lemons, limes, oranges, whatever and you are getting aninteresting flavor that would not be presentwere the fruit be left alone.

Grilled fruit, it adds some smokiness toyour cocktails, Robyn said.

I get a real kick out of Robyn. You name itand shes grilled it. She has taken thelemonade recipe and used the same principle, grilled fruit, in other drinks. She used lemons, limes and oranges to make a grilled versionof margaritas. Shes done the same withoranges for mimosas, a perfect drink to gowith brunch out on the lake. And if you haveone of those boat grills, why not try makingsome french toast for breakfast? If you do itin the style of Robyn the Grill Grrrl, you addrum to your egg mixture. Of course, you willwant a griddle to place on your grill.

OK. Robyn says the grilled lemonaderecipe is somewhat labor intensive. It does, after all, call for six pounds of lemons. And

then you have to squeeze the lemons.I like easy. The grilled lemonade is

work, she said. Theres a lot of squeezing. You have to put your party guests to work.

While the recipe calls for bourbon, Robynsays she likes it best with vodka. She will be

demonstrating the cooking of fruit andmaking drinks on the Cooking Channel inJune on the show Food(ography) with MoRocca.

Heres an easy one that Robyn sharedthat takes little time at all and is perfect totake advantage of hot coals. It is grilledromaine. I have seen recipes for a grilledCaesar, which is similar to what Robyndoes. Only Robyns recipe is much lesswork, and very little is done when it comesto dressing the lettuce.

It has so much flavor, you dont have to

add much of anything, she says. So, heres a salad to try with your grilled

lemonade or the rib job drink that follows. Itis one of those things that is so easy to doonce you have the grill fired up to cook somesteaks or ribs or chicken or whatever.Everything is to taste. Slice romaine lettuceheads length-wise either in half or in quarters,

depending on the size of the head. Drizzle thecut side with olive oil and sprinkle with seasalt and fresh ground black pepper to taste.Grill the romaine, cut side down, until youachieve charring. Remove and add more oliveoil and salt and pepper if necessary. Sprinklewith some hard cheese, like Parmesan, andserve.

These lemons are cooling off prior tobeing squeezed into a batch oflemonade. Grilled drinks are a newtrend for outdoor cooking enthusiasts.

    ROBYN MEDLIN LINDARS

(Recipe courtesy of Marcus Wang, seniorscientist for Kingsford Charcoal)

    Makes one 64 oz pitcher

    INGREDIENTS:

6 pounds lemons, cut in half

    1/2 cup water

    1/2 cup sugar

    1/2 cup honey

    2 rosemary sprigs (optional)

1 cup Four Roses Bourbon (or bourbon ofyour choice)

Dip each half of the cut lemons in sugarand set aside on a tray to be grilled.

Combine water, sugar and honey in a

saucepan or disposable aluminum tray. Adda couple of sprigs of rosemary to the pan

(this is optional but adds a unique touch!)

Heat up your grill to medium-high heat. Foradditional rosemary flavor, throw a handfulof rosemary sprigs on the hot coals justbefore grilling.

Grill the lemons cut-side down until nice

grill marks appear (5-7 minutes). Removethe lemons and set aside to cool.

While grilling the lemons, place thesaucepan with the honey syrup on the grill.Heat the syrup until sugar and honey arefully dissolved, giving the rosemary time toinfuse the syrup with flavor.

Let the lemons cool, then squeeze the juiceinto a pitcher by hand. Add syrup and waterto taste, along with bourbon and ice. Stirwell and serve.

(NOTE: Robyn Medlin Lindars prefers usingvodka instead of bourbon.)

The summer fun on the water in the

Northeast corner of Indiana is well-known

    with lakes by the dozens.

The golf is not bad either.

The golf down here is really good,

ridgewater Golf Club head golf profes-

sional Ivan Foster said. Compared to

Michigan or the Chicago area, it is very

nexpensive. It is a great deal.

    Lake James Golf Club (Angola)

irector of Golf Rich Smith said, There isno doubt that this area is a great golf

destination. Northeast Indiana is the perfectplace to rest, relax and rejuvenate.

Locals dont have to travel far to play a

    variety of championship courses. Tourists

visit in droves to tackle these links as

    affordable, high-quality alternatives in

comparison to popular resort destinations in

    the Midwest.

Northeast Indiana is a great golf

destination because of its location, said

Matt Funkhouser, head golf professional at

Glendarin Hills Golf Club in Angola.

Whether you are traveling from Chicago,

ndianapolis, Detroit or Cleveland, it is

    easily accessible from the highways.

The topography along with the rolling

hills make every course in Northeast

ndiana unique and challenging. There are

several courses to choose from, which

attracts groups that want variety during

    their golf trip.

There are several courses to enjoy in this

four-county area. A couple can catch the

eyes right off the Indiana Toll Road with

Cedar Lake Golf Course in Howe or

Country Meadows Golf Resort in Fremont.

Theres a choice or double the fun right

down the road from each other with the

East and West courses at Bridgewater Golf

    Club in Auburn.

Golfers can get a taste of Scotland by

playing links golf at Noble Hawk Golf

Links in Kendallville. They can also play

the same course the top women in NCAA

Division III golf will play next spring at

Zollner Golf Course on the campus of Trine

    University in Angola.

That is just to name a few. The golf adds

    to the Northeast Indiana experience.

This area is blessed with an outlet mall,

great restaurants, Pokagon State Park and

plenty of quality hotels, Smith said. And

did I mention we have a few lakes?

    The Bridgewater courses, Glendarin Hills,

    Noble Hawk and Kendallvilles Cobblestone

Golf Club are five of seven area golf courses

    featured at greatindianagolf.com. Stay-and-

play packages are offered for those tracks on

    that website.

Weve been doing it for about 10 years,

but we really got serious about it in the last

four or five years. Thats when we started

going to golf shows in Chicago, Grand

Rapids, Detroit, Cleveland and Indy, Noble

Hawk Director of Golf Tim Dykstra said.

We spend a lot of time and promotion. Im

just amazed with all the people who come

    into town.

It not only benefits the golf courses and

hotels, but other businesses as well. It brings

a lot of commerce into Noble County,

especially from people who would never

    come here otherwise.

    The close proximity between Noble

Hawk and Cobblestone works well for the

    two Kendallville courses, Dykstra added.

Both are the highest quality for destina-tion-type courses. Some people are willing

to drive. The two feed off of each otherbecause groups will play both of them while

    they are here, he said.

In addition to that, we do golf packages

with the Best Western. We do an unbeliev-

able business with that. We have thousands

of visitors outside the state because of the

quality of the courses and affordability.

Foster and Cobblestone head golf pro Jeff

Huffman have seen the benefits of greatindi-

    anagolf.com.

    On the stay-and-play packages, the

prices are very competitive, Huffman said.

We see the majority of the traffic from

Michigan and northern Ohio. We do get

some from Ontario. Windsor is only about a

three-and-a-half hour drive. Its pretty neat.

Foster said, We get a lot of exposure

from that and it works well for us.

    Disc golf is beginning

    its second season on the

    expected to draw more

    people to the sport that

    Love of the game and

    love and respect for a

    Kendallville resident

    because son Paul

    Imbrock was

    Disc golf is free, easy

Boat safetyIt is wise to check out The Handbook

of Indiana Boating Laws and Responsi-bilities, even if you are a seasonedskipper.

The booklets are available at many

marinas, sporting goods stores, baithouses and law enforcement offices. The book also can be found online atboated.com/in/handbook.

Here are some highlights from the guidefor when you head out on to the lake:

    Filing a float plan

Before going out on a vessel, it isalways a good idea to leave a float planwith a relative or friend, or at least with alocal marina. A float plan should:

Describe the vessel, including itsregistration number, length, make, horsepower and engine type.

State where you are going, the detailedroute, your planned departure time andyour expected return time.

Give the name, address and telephonenumber of each person on board and anemergency contact.

Predeparture checklistYou can help assure a good time while

operating your vessel by performing thispredeparture check.

Check the weather forecast for the areaand timeframe during which you will beboating.

Make sure that the steering and throttlecontrols operate properly and all lights areworking properly.

Check for any fuel leaks from the tank, fuel lines and carburetor.

Check the engine compartment for oilleaks.

Check hose connections for leaks orcracks, and make sure hose clamps are

tight. Drain all water from the engine

compartment, and be sure the bilge plug isreplaced and secure.

Check to be sure you have a fullycharged engine battery and fireextinguishers.

If so equipped, make sure the ignitionsafety switch and wrist lanyard are in goodorder.

Make sure you have the required

number of personal flotation devices(PFDs), and check that they are in goodcondition.

Leave a float plan with a reliablefriend or relative.

    Prepare the boat to

    handle severe weather

Slow down, but keep enough power tomaintain headway and steering.

Close all hatches, windows and doors

to reduce the chance of swamping. Stow any unnecessary gear. Turn on your boats navigation lights.

If there is fog, sound your fog horn. Keep bilges free of water. Be prepared

to remove water by bailing. If there is lightning, disconnect all

electrical equipment. Stay as clear of metalobjects as possible.

    Prepare your passengersfor severe weather

Have everyone put on a Coast Guard-approved life jacket or personal floatationdevice. If passengers are already wearing

their PFDs, make sure they are securedproperly.

Have your passengers sit on the vesselfloor close to the centerline for their safetyand to make the boat more stable.

Decide whether to go to shore or rideout the storm.

If possible, head for the nearest shorethat is safe to approach. If already caught

in a storm, it may be best to ride it out inopen water rather than try to approach theshore in heavy wind and waves.

Head the bow into the waves at a 45-degree angle. PWCs should head directlyinto the waves.

    Who may operate a vessel

All motorboat or personal water craftoperators must have a valid drivers licenseto operate on all Indiana public waters.

Motorboat operators who are 15 yearsof age may operate a motorboat or PWCuntil they become a licensed driver only ifthey complete a boater education courseapproved by the Department of NaturalResources and have on board an ID cardissued by the Indiana Bureau of MotorVehicles.

A person who has never been licensedby the BMV must complete an approvedboater education course successfully and

have on board an ID issued by the IndianaBMV to operate a motorboat legally. No one under 15 years of age may

legally operate a motorboat greater than 10horsepower or a PWC.

If you operate your motorboatrecklessly while intoxicated or break thePWC laws, you could have points assessedagainst your vehicle drivers license.

On Indiana boundary waters,Indiana residents are required to have adrivers license. Nonresidents are not

required to have a license unlessoperating in an embayment, river orstream in Indiana.

    Personal floatation devices

All vessels must carry one wearable(Type I, II, III, or V) U.S. Coast Guard-approved PFD for each person on board orbeing towed.

In addition to the above requirement, vessels 16 feet in length or longer (excepta canoe or kayak) must have one Type IV

USCG-approved PFD on board and readilyaccessible. Each person on board a PWC must

wear a PFD. All persons being towed behind a

PWC on water skis or any other devicemust wear a USCG-approved PFD. Skibelts are not USCG-approved.

    Fire extinguishers

It is advisable to carry a fireextinguisher, though this is required oncertain waters, such as Lake Michigan andthe Ohio River.

    Dangerous operation

prohibitedA person may not operate a boat in a

manner that does any of the following: Unnecessarily endangers the person or

    property of another person.

    ANGOLA Camping means different

    things to different people.

    Throughout northeastern Indiana, there

    are outdoors vacationing opportunities to

fit most interests. There are a number of

private campgrounds and Chain O Lakes

and Pokagon state parks. One could pick

rustic accommodations or a site with

amenities. To keep up with the times,

    many campgrounds offer Wi-Fi Internetconnection.

As the season slowly rolls in, many

    campgrounds are cooking up special

breakfasts and activities for Mothers Day.

When Memorial Day hits and schools

close for the summer, campgrounds go

    into full swing.

There are camping facilities available in

    Steuben, LaGrange, Noble and DeKalb

counties. Some are only open for specialevents or have a handful of rustic sites.

    Others operate swimming pools, mini-golf

courses and other attractions that may

bring in more than just campers.

At the state parks, many of the favorite

sites are reserved throughout the season.

    Reservations are accepted online at

    indianastateparks.reserveamerica.com.

Pokagon, situated on Lake James and

Snow Lake, protects more than 1,200 acres

of Steuben County nature open to thepublic through a series of developed trails,

two beaches and the campground. There is

a group camp, 73 sites for rustic camping,

200 sites for recreational vehicles, cabins

and the Potawatomi Inn. The nature center

offers almost daily activities, hikes and

    interpretive programs throughout the

summer. Horseback riding is also available

and in the winter there is a toboggan slide.

One of the inaugural events for thissummer is the Pokagon Tri-Fort

    Triathlon/Duathlon starting at the Civilian

    Conservation Corps shelter on Saturday,

May 21. The Fort Wayne Philharmonic

makes an annual stop for Patriotic Pops,

this year on Wednesday, June 29, at 7 p.m.

    on the inn lawn.

Chain O Lakes State Park is located

along nine connecting lakes that can be

boated or canoed with a beach and 10

miles of forested trails. There are cabinsand 331 camp sites with electric hookups,

49 without electricity and 33 primitive as

well as a rally camp and canoe camp.

Welcome Back weekend at Chain O

Lakes includes a two-hour INShape hike

on Saturday, May 7 and a scavenger hunt

and campfire later in the day.

Bixler Lake Campground is on the east

side of the lake in Kendallville. Its

wooded sites are available through the

    citys park and recreation department.

Water and electric hookups are provided,

and a camp store offers firewood, ice, drinks and snacks. There is fishing and

    supervised swimming on the 117-acre

Bixler Lake. Part of Bixler Lake Park, the

    campground features modern playgrounds,

a ball diamond, nature trails, horseshoe

and volleyball courts and special events.

There is a KOA in Auburn, just off

I-69, available for those just driving

through or staying for a car auction.

    Gordons Campground in Wolcottville

offers 75 wooded acres at 9500 E. C.R.600S in LaGrange County. Camping is

    first-come, first-served with space for

about 400. Though no reservations are

taken, there is rarely a problem with

    space, said manager Miranda Krider.

About 140 sites are taken through the

summer by seasonal campers. There are

three cabins and two rental campers that

    can be reserved.

Gordons opened April 16, though the

chilly weather resulted in a low turnout,

said Krider. She does expect a busy

summer, as the economy and gas prices

    continue to press pocketbooks.

People are staying closer and reallytaking advantage of whats close to them,

Krider said. Last summer, she saw more

people coming from closer, such as around

a two hours drive away instead of coming

    from greater distances.

The campground has a pool and

playground area for children, and there are

    weekend activities. This weekend,

campers can enjoy a bonfire by the barn.

Last year we had a band for all three
