On Wings of the Soul, Volume 1: A Songbook of Baha’i Inspired MusicCompiled by Elaine Merrill Losey and Beth King-MockIllustrated by Elaine Losey and other artistsCopyright © 2012 by Elaine Losey

All rights reserved. No part of this book may be reproduced or transmitted in any form or by any means, electronic or mechanical, including photocopying and recording, or by any information storage or retrieval system, without written permission from Heartfelt Connections, Inc.

The songs in this book are used with permission from the composers whenever it was possible to contact them. There are many songs whose composers are unknown to me. Although I have collected Baha’i inspired songs for over 40 years, I learned many of these songs from other singers, folk music-style, without knowing the composer’s name. Please excuse this lack ofinformation as every effort was made to give credit to the composer. When the composers were known, they were given copyright recognition. If you, the reader, know the composer please inform me through Heartfelt Connections, Inc., email: [email protected].

The cover of this book is designed by Elaine Losey. The stained glass design is made by Bob and Elaine Losey, who hold the copyright. On the flower petal of the book’s cover, is a calligraphic symbol which in Arabic says, “Ya Baha’u’l-Baha”, “O Thou Glory of the All-Glorious”. Thank you, Parvonneh Farid, for permission to use this beautiful, copyright-protected calligraphy.

Fruits of One TreeArr: Elaine Losey

    2. The teachings of the Bab spread from man to man,Across the whole of Persia and throughout the land.Jealous men of power arose on every hand,And killed the blessed Bab and more than twenty-

    thousand of His followers.

    3. But then in 1863 a Babi of much fame,In the Garden of Ridvan, near Baghdad, did proclaim,That He was the Promised One foretold by the Bab,And henceforth He was known as Baha'u'llah, the

    Glory of God.

    4. Baha'u'llah was banished again and again,By jealous leaders of religion and of government. And yet there came forth boundless wisdom from His

mighty pen,And words of guidance for an ailing world, and the

    teachings of men.

    5. His followers throughout the land are known as Baha'is,And for the Blessed Beauty they freely gave their lives. The teachings of Baha'u'llah were spread throughout the

world,And now His Word is known, and the standard of His

    Cause unfurled.

God Is Sufficient Unto MeWords of Bahá’u’lláh

© Copyright Tom Price, used with his permission

Music by Tom Price and N. Fani

I now proceed to relate what befell the remaining companions of the Báb, those who had been privileged toshare the horrors of the confinement with Bahá'u'lláh. From His own lips I have often heard the followingaccount: "All those who were struck down by the storm that raged during that memorable year in Tihran wereOur fellow-prisoners in the Siyah-Chal, where We were confined. We were all huddled together in one cell, our feet in stocks, and around our necks fastened the most galling of chains. The air we breathed was ladenwith the foulest impurities, while the floor on which we sat was covered with filth and infested with vermin. No ray of light was allowed to penetrate that pestilential dungeon or to warm its icy-coldness. We were placedin two rows, each facing the other. We had taught them to repeat certain verses which, every night, theychanted with extreme fervour. 'God is sufficient unto me; He verily is the All-sufficing!' one row wouldintone, while the other would reply: 'In Him let the trusting trust.' The chorus of these gladsome voices wouldcontinue to peal out until the early hours of the morning. Their reverberation would fill the dungeon, and, piercing its massive walls, would reach the ears of Násiri'd-Dín Sháh, whose palace was not far distant fromthe place where we were imprisoned. 'What means this sound?' he was reported to have exclaimed. 'It is theanthem the Bábís are intoning in their prison,' they replied. The Shah made no further remarks, nor did heattempt to restrain the enthusiasm his prisoners, despite the horrors of their confinement, continued to display.

    Let Thy Heart Be Dilated

Words of 'Abdu'l-BahaMusic by: Tara Ellis

    Arr: Beth King-Mockand Elaine Losey

Verily, I address thee with such an appellation whereby the hearts of those who are endowed withintelligence, are dilated with joy; because, verily, this is from my heart which is overflowing with the loveof God -- and an appellation that proceeds from love will certainly be as a spirit for the souls, as a light tothe eyes, as a life to bodies and as a dressing for the hearts and bodies which are wounded and laceratedby the afflictions of this world. Then be consoled by the praise of thy Lord, whenever thou art attackedby grief and sorrow. (Abdu'l-Baha, Tablets of Abdu'l-Baha v1, p. 129)

Our hearts are uplifted in thankfulness to Him. (Abdu'l-Baha, Foundations of World Unity, p. 62)

    (Echo each verse)

"O that I could travel, even though on foot and in the utmost poverty, to these regions, and, raising thecall of 'Ya Baha'u'l-Abha' in cities, villages, mountains, deserts and oceans, promote the divineteachings! This, alas, I cannot do. How intensely I deplore it! Please God, ye may achieve it."
