All sorts of people from various parts used to approach him for answers on all kinds of questions on topics like the meaning of life, life after death and so on and so forth. When the professor got retired from the university after a long stint of distinguished service, he returned to his native village and settled down there. He thought he should not idle away his time. Therefore, he decided to keep himself engaged by doing some farming which he knew during his childhood. Accordingly, he prepared a piece of his farmland for cultivation. He irrigated the land, manured it and kept it ready for sowing. The next day, he came out to the farm with a basket full of sprouted seeds and started sowing the seeds. As he proceeded forward, he noticed a flock of birds from wilderness settling down and picking up the sprouted seeds one by one and devouring it. By the time, he completed his sowing from one end to the other end, he could see that all the sprouted seeds were eaten away by the birds. The professor went back home dejected by his experience as a farmer. The next day, he came out with another basket of sprouted seeds and began the sowing. This time, more birds landed on the field and started feeding on the seeds leaving nothing behind. The professor went back home thoughtful of what he should do to overcome the challenging situation. The third day, he came out to the field again with sprouted seeds and began broadcasting it as usual. The birds, as can be expected, landed in the field and completely consumed the seeds. The professor was Good management totally confused and mentally depressed. That night, he could not get sleep. He kept thinking of a practical solution to the problem. Next day morning, he went out in search of one of his childhood colleagues who was engaged in farming, in the same village. He narrated his experiences to the farmer colleague and sought his help. The villager pacified him and promised all possible help. The next day morning, the farmer friend went out to the field with a basket full of small pebbles appearing exactly like seeds and began sowing them in the field. The birds came down with lot of expectations and picked up the pebbles one by one and found it unsuitable for consumption and left the field one by one. The next day, again, the farmer repeated the same operation in the field. Less number of birds came this time and soon left the field. The third day, the same process was repeated and none of the birds turned up. The fourth day, in succession, the farmer friend came out with a basket of real sprouted seeds and broadcasted it from one end to the other end of the field. There was no attack from the birds this time. The seeds gradually gave roots and shoots and began to grow. Practical wisdom is more important in managing situations whether it is in agriculture, industry or in business management. Good management requires good common sense. International Conference on Web Services Computing – 2013 The second International Conference on Web Services Computing was organised jointly by the MCA department of SSTM and Systems & Operations department of SCMS Cochin School of Business on August 29 and 30. The two-day conference, the brainchild of the Conference Convener Prof. Indu Nair, Group Director, turned out to be a forum where scholars, industry experts and, entrepreneurs gathered to discuss and share their ideas on various aspects of emerging disciplines in IT. The speakers at this year's conference included experts from such industry leaders as IBM, Blackberry, UST Global and TCS. They brought with them a wealth of information on how the field of Web Services is Seminars and workshops Campus activities A five-day training programme on 'Microcontroller and DSP' including mini project using Texas Instruments by Trident Techlabs, Bangalore was conducted during September 24 to 28 at Electronics and Communication Engineering department. The course was attended by 3rd semester M Tech (VLSI and Embedded system) students. Resource persons from Texas Instrument handled the sessions. The 'Randomize Quiz' was conducted by FRAMES, Association of Civil Engineering department, on September 11.Nikhitha Zacharia and Vipin Satheesh won the first prize during the competition. Onam was celebrated on September 13 by staff and students. The NSS unit celebrated Onam by presenting 'pookalams' and other activities. The delegation from SCMS was invited for the workshop held at the University on 'Modern Methods of Water and Waste Water Treatment' from September 22 to 29 as a part of the project. This is the first time in the history of private self financing colleges in Kerala that an international research project with external funding is taken up and a delegation is visiting the foreign partner. Complete expenses of the delegation are being funded by the foreign partner, said Dr.Pradeep P.Thevannoor, Vice Chairman, SCMS Group. Once, there was an erudite philosopher-professor in a reputed university. All sorts of people from various parts used to approach him for answers on all kinds of questions on topics like the meaning of life, life after death and so on and so forth.

When the professor got retired from the university after a long stint of distinguished service, he returned to his native village and settled down there. He thought he should not idle away his time. viewed by the industry. Academicians from Government College, and elsewhere brought great insight into the kind of research and study that has enabled Web Services to become the buzzword that it is. And, finally, entrepreneurs from the start-up village shared the very real ways in which Web Services could be used to enable innovation and, not to mention make money.

The conference began with a welcome address by Dr. V. Raman Nair, Director, SCMS COCHIN School of Business. Mr. Varghese Cherian, who heads the Technology Services at UST Global, gave the presidential address. Ms. Annie Mathew, Director of Alliances and Business Development at BlackBerry, India and South Asia gave the inaugural address. Prof. Dr. K. R. Srivathsan, Director of Chinmaya Institute of Technology in Kannur gave the keynote address.

The plenary sessions began with a presentation by Dr. Gladstone Raj, Head of Dept., Computer Science at Government College, Thiruvanthapuram.

The first day of the conference came to a close with presentations by three young entrepreneurs from the start-up village, Mr. Charles. S. Vincent, the Chief Product Officer at RHLvision Technologies Pvt Ltd., Mr. Sabarish, Co-founder of SectorQube Technolabs, and Midhun V. Shankar, CEO & Co-founder Verbicio Tech LLP.

The second day, the speakers were Mr. Jerry Mannel, Mr. Reghunath, both from IBM and Mr. Anand Parthasarathy, an eminent IT journalist, founder of Online India Tech, and Mr. Rajeev Mukundan, who heads the Insurance Vertical Solutions & Sales for TCS Analytics.

Mr. Manu Zachariah, Director of Hack IT Technology and Advisory Services, spoke about many new threats that have emerged with the advent of the Web Services and the consequences and proactive measures to deal with them. Through his demonstration of the vulnerabilities of various systems across the web he enlightened the audience to the ways in which they can be attacked and, by extension, the precautions they can take to defend themselves. The plenary sessions were concluded with a very lively Q&A session where he answered several questions about information security.

Mr.Subroto Bagchi, Chairman, and business writer visited SCMS campus for an interactive session with the business entrepreneurs and the management students of SCMS, organised by CII in association with SCMS COCHIN School of Business.

“Building a business is a mind game. The entrepreneurs should realise that people are the most important part of a company and hence must understand their emotions to take their company to new heights. Reputation is not just about doing charity. It is about everything.” Mr. Bagchi said.

The Onam celebrations held at SCMS Prathap Nagar campus had a unique feature. Hon. Deputy Mayor, Ms. B.Bhadra, inaugurated the celebratios. Dr.G.P.C. Nayar, Chairman, SCMS Group and Mr. K.L. Mohana Varma, noted Malayalam writer offered felicitations.

The members of faculty and staff joined the students in the cultural programme. A huge floral carpet adorned the entrance to the corporate office.

The 'Maveli' graced the occasion with royal presence and delivered the Onam messege to one and all. The Royal king advised “All shall join together to strive at building a welfare society with no lies and no deceits.”

University of Hyogo Students at SCMS

A team of students and faculty from the University of Hyogo, Japan visited SCMS Cochin School of Business as part of the student /faculty exchange programme. The students are doing their final year MBA. They had a sojourn in the campus from August 26 to 30. During the stay they had interactions with students and faculty in addition to lecturer sessions.

at University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Northwestern Switzerland has joined SCMS for term V of the PGDM programme under the student exchange programme.

SCMS Cochin School of Business has student and faculty exchange programmes with several foreign Universities like University of Hyogo, Japan, IS:Link, University of Applied Sciences, Duisburg-Essen, Hochschle Ravensburg-Weingarten, Germany and Chonnam National University, South Korea.

Proper Grooming needed for a Good Manager

Ms. Ambika Pillai, the business leader in beauty therapy services, and business expert in skin care and hair style, paid a visit to SCMS on September 19 as a part of the Industry Institute Interaction programme. She was rhetorically eloquent on 'the importance of proper grooming for success in one's career. She turned out to be a source of inspiration for the innovative ideas of students to embark upon business. Her beauty therapy service centre in Cochin was recently inaugurated by Ms. Sushmita Sen, former Miss Universe.

Parivarthana, a social initiative of SCMS, with the objective of empowering the students in their adolescence in order to face the social challenges and problems of modern society. It is it’s fourth year activity now. It is an annual programme, started in 2010, in which students from SCMS institutions, interact with students of higher secondary schools in and around Ernakulam with an objective to make them aware of the socially relevant topic selected for the year and to bring about a positive change in them. The uniquenes of the entire programme is its informality and the complete absence of the experts, delivering lectures.

Parivarthana 2013 is scheduled from October 3 to November 4, with an intention to reach out at least a 100 schools in Ernakulam. With a strong message to children that “Police are friends, respect them and abide law with happy heart,” the programme intends to address the rising unhealthy and dangerous tendency in the society to disrespect and ridicule the police, the constitutional ideals and democratic institutions. The hour-long programme includes a skit, a game session and a song and dance sequence, all carrying strong messages highlighting the importance of police in protecting our life, our freedom, our family and our property.
