    The Foolish Timid Rabbit

Once upon a time, a Rabbit was sleep under a palm-tree. All at once he woke up,

    and thought:

"What if the world should break up! What then would become of me"

At that moment, some Monkeys dropped a cocoanut. It fell down on the ground just

back of the Rabbit. Hearing the noise, the Rabbit said

"The earth is all breaking up!"

"The earth is all breaking up!"

And he jumped up and ran just as fast as he could, without even looking back to see

    what made the noise.

Sheep saw him running, and called after him,

Sheep : "Why are you running so fast for?"

Rabbit : "Don't ask me!" he cried.

But the other Sheep ran after him, begging to know what was the matter.

Sheep : "Why are you running so fast for?"

Rabbit : "Don't you know? The earth is all breaking up!"

And he ran again. The next Sheep they met ran with them when he heard that the earth was

all breaking up. One Sheep after another joined them, until there were hundreds of Sheep

running as fast as they could go.

At last the Cow saw the animals running, and heard their cry that the earth was all breaking

up. He thought there must be some mistake, so he ran to the foot of a hill in front of them and

    said mooooo three times.

    Moooo... Mooooo... Moooooo

This voice stopped them, for they knew the voice of the King of Beasts, and they feared him.

Cow: "Why are you running so fast?" asked the Cow

Sheep :"Oh, King Cow," they answered him, "the earth is all breaking up!"

    Cow:"Who saw it breaking up?"

Sheeep :"I didn't,". "Ask another Sheep he told me about it."

    Cow : did you?

    Sheep : I didnt

One after another of the Sheep said: "I did not see it, but Rabbit told me about it."

At last the Cow came to the Rabbit who had first said the earth was all breaking up.

"Is it true that the earth is all breaking up?" the Cow asked.

"Yes, O Cow, it is," said the Rabbit. "I was asleep under a palm-tree. I woke up and

thought, 'What would become of me if the earth should all break up?' At that very

moment, I heard the sound of the earth breaking up, and I ran away."

"Then," said the Cow, "you and I will go back to the place where the earth began to

break up, and see what is the matter."

So the Cow put the little Rabbit on his back, and away they went like the wind. The other

animals waited for them at the foot of the hill.

The Rabbit told the Cow when they were near the place where he slept, and the Cow saw just

where the Rabbit had been sleeping.

He saw, too, the cocoanut that had fallen to the ground near by. Then the Cow said to the

Rabbit, "It must have been the sound of the cocoanut falling to the ground that you

    heard. You foolish Rabbit!"

And the Cow ran back to the other animals, and told them all about it.

    The Goat's New Name

Ingrid's papa went to town to buy a new goat. Her mama used goat's milk to makecheese and butter. When Papa came home, he put the goat in a shed.

Ingrid loved animals and wanted to play with the goat, but she couldn't open the barthat held the shed door shut. Hello, goat. I'm Ingrid. Can I come in and pet you?

The goat heard Ingrid's voice and stuck his head out through a hole in the door. Hishorns barely fit through.

Oh, hello. My name is Ingrid. Do you have a name?

The goat's beard hung down. Mehhhhh. Mehhhhh.

That's a funny name. I don't like it. I think I'll call you Don Quixote. He had beardand a long face like you. He didn't have horns though. Ingrid giggled.

    The goat went, Mehhhhh. Mehhhhh.

No, it's not Mehhhhh. It's Don Quixote. Can you remember that?

The goat nodded its head up and down.

Very well, Don Quixote. You are to give mama lots of milk tonight. I want somecheese and butter. Nod your head if you understand me, Ingrid said.

The goat nodded its head up and down.

Papa won't let me come through the gate. He said you might hurt me with yourhorns. You wouldn't do that, would you, Don Quixote? Nod your head if youunderstand me.

The goat nodded its head up and down.

A few minutes later Mama came outside. She opened the gate. You stay out here,Mama warned Ingrid.

    Yes, Mama.

Mama opened the shed and milked the goat. She carried the full bucket into thehouse. Ingrid followed. Mama, you got a lot of milk from Don Quixote.

What did you call the goat? Don Quixote?

Ingrid giggled. I know it's a silly name, but that's what seemed to fit.

Ingrid, the goat is a girl goat, not a boy goat. Don Quixote is a boy's name.

    Ingrid stared at her mama.

Nod your head if you understand me, Ingrid, Mama said.

Ingrid nodded her head. She went out to the fence and called the goat. I can't callyou Don Quixote any more. You're a girl. What would you like your name to be?

    Mehhhhh. Mehhhhh, went the goat.

I should have listened. That's what you wanted to be called earlier. Mehhhhh, mehhhhh, it is then. Ingrid ran back into the house to watch her mama makecheese. She was glad to have a new goat.
