1 Corinthians 11:23-26 The First Account of the Last Supper

The earliest recorded description of the Eucharist comes from Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians. It is even older than the gospels. Before the evangelists wrote about the Last Supper, Paul had already sent a letter to the church in Corinth, describing what had happened.

Paul says his version is already part of a tradition. “I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you.” Namely, that Jesus took bread and wine on the night before he died. He gave thanks, broke the bread, and said, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Do this, Paul reports. Taking the cup, Jesus pronounced it as the cup of “the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” Often, Paul reports. Do this often.

“For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes,” Paul says.

We gather for Eucharist often. We still carry out one of the oldest and certainly the richest rituals in the Christian tradition. And whenever we eat and drink the body and blood of Christ, we proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes.

It is a privilege to share this meal. We have inherited it from a long tradition. And with it inherited a responsibility—to proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes. Often. SCRIPTURE READINGS The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ: Melchizedek, priest of God Most High, offers bread and wine as a blessing upon Abraham. Jesus fulfills this offering, giving us his own body and blood under the forms of bread and wine. Thus is our hunger satisfied in abundance, as we make our pilgrim way to the heavenly banquet. One of the most precious and perhaps less visible gifts we give one another, as a believing community united in and by the spirit of Christ, is the gift of our prayers. We join in praying for one another’s needs, especially for the following:

NECC MISSION TRIP to DETROIT: JULY 8-15, 2016 Any highschooler (grade 8 or higher) is invited to come on the mission trip this year. We have 10 spaces and will be drawing from our North East churches. This will be our 16th trip and it will be a very interesting trip this year. We are going to Detroit. Detroit is a city that has suffered many of the same post-industrial and economic struggles that Baltimore has endured and it seems to be coming around. But it will need a lot of support. We will be also visiting the point of departure for many who came along the Hidden Railway of Harriet Tubman and others. It was at Detroit that they came to make their entrance to Canada and freedom. For further details, please contact Lisa [email protected] or Rudy Dehaney 410-209-0302. ANNUAL PARISH CRAB FEAST - Mark your calendars for Sunday, August 21, 2016 for our next Annual Parish Crab Feast which will be held from 2-6pm at Columbus Gardens. More details as to the menu and price per ticket will be announced soon in future bulletins. WELCOME TO NEW FAITH FORMATION FAMILIES!! In the next few weeks all families with children who will be rising kindergarten, first and second graders (or ages 5-8) will receive a welcome phone call from a parent whose family already participates in the faith formation program offered by the Northeast Catholic Community parishes. All families that we will reach out to are registered at our parishes. Your contact information comes directly from the parish’s family directory. Our parents would like to welcome you and share with you the faith formation and sacramental prep programs the NECC Faith Formations Center offers for your children. Even if your children attend or plan to attend a catholic grade school, they are still welcome to any of our programs. If you are a family with children in kindergarten, first and/or second grade not yet enrolled in faith formation and if you do not receive a phone call, please be so kind as to contact the parish office to see if your contact information is up to date in the family directory. You can contact the parish office at 410-426-0360 (St. Dominic) or 410-488-0400 (SA/MPB). Healthy Home Study for Asthmatic Children. The National Center for Healthy Housing (http://www.nchh.org/), a leading research organization, has launched a study to examine the link between enhancing indoor quality and reducing childhood asthma symptoms. In this study, homes with asthmatic children will receive comprehensive home improvements including air sealing, insulation, duct sealing, ventilation upgrades, filtration upgrades, and more. There is no cost to participate, and families will receive up to $350 for their time. Participants must live in single-family homes or townhomes in Maryland or the District of Columbia. Saint Anthony of Padua – St. Dominic – Most Precious Blood May 29, 2016 BALTIMORE COUNTY RESIDENTS PLEASE ACT NOW! If you are a resident of Baltimore County, please contact your councilmember NOW to support the Baltimore County HOME Act which will be introduced on June 6th to be voted on July 5th. In keeping with our Church’s social justice mission, Beyond the Boundaries, Archdiocese of Baltimore, and the Maryland Catholic Conference have been lobbying throughout the State for this legislation which will prohibit discrimination in housing based solely on source of income. In Baltimore County, people who have been successful in getting a housing subsidy voucher are clustered in the few communities where landlords will accept them. Most people with vouchers are low-wage workers (25%), disabled (30%), or seniors (32%). After years on a waiting list, some families lose their vouchers if they cannot be placed during the limited time allowed to use it. Please call/email/mail your Baltimore County Council Member NOW urging him or her to support the Baltimore County HOME ACT. Ask family members and friends to make contact also. - District 1 (Catonsville, Arbutus, Halethorpe, Lansdowne) Councilmember Tom Quirk 754 Frederick Rd, Catonsville, Md. 21228, 410-887-0896 [email protected] - District 2 (Ruxton,Garrison, Pikesville, Owings Mills, Reisterstown) Councilmember Vicki Almond, Old Courthouse, 400 Washington Ave., Towson, Md. 21204, 410-887-3385 [email protected] - District 3 (Hampton, Luthervile, Mays Chapel, Timonium, Cockeysville) Councilmember Wade Kach, 400 Washington Ave., Towson, Md. 21204, 410-887-3387 [email protected], - District 4 (Randallstown, Lochearn, Millford Mill, North Woodlawn, West Owings Mills) Councilmember Julian Jones, Liberty Family Resource Center, 3525 Resource Drive, Randallstown, Md. 21133, 410-887-0784 [email protected], - District 5 (Carney, Kingsville, Perry Hall, Rossville, White Marsh, Nottingham. Saint Anthony of Padua – St. Dominic – Most Precious Blood May 29, 2016 Feast Days: May 31: The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary - The feast of the Visitation recalls to us the following great truths and events: The visit of the Blessed Virgin Mary to her cousin Elizabeth shortly after the Annunciation; the cleansing of John the Baptist from original sin in the womb of his mother at the words of Our Lady's greeting; Elizabeth's proclaiming of Mary—under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost—as Mother of God and "blessed among women"; Mary's singing of the sublime hymn, Magnificat ("My soul doth magnify the Lord") which has become a part of the daily official prayer of the Church. June 1: St. Justin, martyr – Justin came to Rome for education and to find the truth. Justin had to admit that philosophers may talk about God but had never seen him, may discuss the soul but didn't really know it. But if the philosophers whom Justin admired and followed couldn't, then nobody could, right? An old man told him about the ancient prophets, the Hebrew prophets, who had talked not of ideas but of what they had seen and heard, what they knew and experienced. And this was God. He told Justin to pray that the gates of light be opened to him. Inflamed by this conversation, Justin sought out the Scriptures and came to love them. Justin took his newfound faith to the people. This layman became the first great apologist for Christianity and opened the gates of light for so many others. He explained baptism and Eucharist. He explained to the pagans why they didn't worship idols and why that didn't make them atheists. He explained to the Jews how Christians could worship the same God but not follow Jewish laws. He explained to the Greeks and the philosophers how philosophy did not take into account the dignity of humankind. He wrote long arguments known as apologies and traveled to other lands in order to debate publicly. His long education in philosophy and rhetoric gave him the skills he needed to match his opponents and the Holy Spirit gave him the rest. It is not surprising that Justin was arrested during the persecution under Marcus Aurelius. Justin and four others were beheaded in the year 165 and went to be with the Truth Justin had longed for all his life. June 2 – Marcellinus and Peter, martyrs: Though we know very little about these two martyrs under Diocletian, there is no question that the early church venerated them. Evidence of the respect in which they were held are the basilica Constantine built over their tombs and the presence of their names in the first eucharistic prayer. Pope St. Damasus says that he heard the story of these two martyrs from their executioner who became a Christian after their deaths. Marcellinus, a priest, and Peter, an exorcist, died in the year 304. According to a legendary account of their martyrdom, the two Romans saw their imprisonment as just one more opportunity to evangelize and managed to convert their jailer and his family. The legend also says that they were beheaded in the forest so that other Christians wouldn't have a chance to bury and venerate their bodies. Two women found the bodies, however, and had them properly buried.

June 3: The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus - The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus falls on the Friday after the Octave of Corpus Christi, or 19 days after Pentecost. Devotion to Our Lord’s physical heart, as a symbol of His perfect love for us, goes back to at least the 11th Century, but it was in the 1670s that Jesus appeared to a French nun, Sister Margaret Mary Alacoque, and gave her the devotion as we celebrate it today. Jesus told her that he wanted her to tell the people of his love. During a second apparition, Margaret Mary saw Jesus’ Sacred Heart on a throne of flames, transparent as crystal, surrounded by a crown of thorns signifying the sins of mankind, with a cross above it. Jesus again told her of his infinite love for mankind and his desire to be honored through the display of the image of his heart, with a promise that all who did so would be specially blessed. He asked that the first Friday after the Feast of the Corpus Christi should be dedicated as a feast in honor of his Sacred Heart, when people should receive Holy Communion in reparation. June 4: The Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary The devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary is connected on many points with that to the Heart of Jesus. The attention of Christians was early attracted by the love and virtues of the Heart of Mary, symbolized by her heart. Simeon's prophecy in Luke 2:33-34 paved the way and furnished devotion with one of its favorite formula and most popular representations: the heart pierced with a sword. Saint Luke's Gospel says that Mary kept all the sayings and doings of Jesus in her heart, that she might ponder them and live by them. Indications of a regular devotion are perceived in a sermon by Saint Bernard (d. 1180), De duodecim stellis, from which extract has been used in the Offices of Compassion and of the Seven Dolors. Stronger evidence is discernible in the pious meditations on the Ave Maria and the Salve Regina. Saint Jean Eudes (d. 1681) propagated the devotion to make it public in 1648. In 1725 Pere de Gallifet combined the cause of the Heart of Mary with that of the Heart of Jesus in order to obtain Rome's approbation of the two devotions and the institution of the two feasts. In 1729 his project was defeated, and in 1765 the two causes were separated, to assure the success of the principal one. In 1799 Pius VI, granted the Bishop of Palermo the feast of the Most Pure Heart of Mary for some of the churches in his diocese. In 1805 Pius VII made a new concession, thanks to which the feast was soon widely observed. In 1942, Pope Pius XII consecrated the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It is celebrated on Saturday following the 2nd Sunday after Pentecost.

Excerpt from Fr. Joe Breighner’s “More Reflections Along A Country Road”

advice Advice is like a good road map. It can show us the best way to go, but we have to decide to make the trip. And just as no road map can include all the detours and roads under construction, so no advice can substitute for our own judgment and character. On

the road of life we all have to get lost and fi nd our way on our own. We cannot avoid making mistakes. Unfortunately, too many of us fail to learn from our mistakes and that only makes matters worse. As a witty person said, “Experience is what you get when you don’t get what you want.” In other words, when we try and fail, at least we have the experience of what did not go right.

The experience of trying is more important than any failure.Father Joe Breighner
