Offertory Hymn: We Will Rise Again

    Holy

Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, All Bow. and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen

Occupancy The value of life does not depend upon the place we occupy.

It depends upon how we occupy that place. —St. Thérèse of Lisieux

  • 20th Sunday in Ordinal Time August 18, 2019

The Prince of Peace wants to set the world on fire? This Sunday's Gospel can sound more intense than what we may be accustomed to. It's a passage of

contradictions. Jesus so clearly prays for unity, yet here he speaks of division. Why would our God who comes as an offering of love speak so frankly about causing relationships to be torn apart? The sobering truth is that Jesus is divisive. We see this throughout the Gospels, as the Pharisees critique him, the Romans condemn him, and not everyone in the crowd is enthusiastic about his words. Jesus has not come for the purpose of dividing, but what he does is so radical that it upends the status quo. And it doesn't end with his preaching and miracles! There is a baptism with which I must be baptized. Jesus isn't talking about his baptism at the Jordan River, which has already occurred, but the passing through the waters of death on the Cross and rising again to new life in the resurrection. This is divisive stuff! Christ's spiritual fire turned the fathers - the Jewish people and Pharisees - against the sons - the common people. Not everyone wants the Gospel Jesus is preaching. Not everyone wants to be set on fire with the desire to love others. Some prefer to put on a warm sweater and curl up in front of the TV. In living and loving as Jesus did, we, too, might ruffle some feathers. In disciplining our teenage child for sneaking out, we may cause some division (temporarily, we hope!). In standing up to gossip and the spread of cruel rumors in our workplace, we might cause division. In emphasizing the dignity of both the desperate mother and the unborn child, we might cause division. Not everyone wants the Gospel Jesus is preaching. Not everyone wants the Gospel we are invited to live. But that's no excuse not to live it.

  • Listen to Jesus and the Prophets Prophets have always had a tough row to hoe. Their words, often unwelcome, are used against them to persecute and even kill them. Such was the fate of the Old Testament prophets, and Jeremiah is a great example of this. Jesus endured opposition

from sinners, and did not turn back from a shameful death in order to rise to a glorious new life. The ultimate prophet, Jesus sought to warn the people of his time and ours of the divisions that his words would cause, showing himself to be the prophet of all time. We all need to look at our divisions and dilemmas in light of Jesus’ teachings and warnings, and seek to understand all that he has proclaimed and taught about what will happen if we fail to listen.

Treasures From Our Tradition In recent weeks, we have reviewed how the Churches of East and West have enriched one another, and this past Thursday’s solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was born in the Eastern Church. It is a gift

from the ancient Church of Jerusalem, a commemoration of the death of Mary, and a feast charged with a deep sense of the Resurrection. Mary, the first disciple, is the first to share fully in Christ’s victory over death. In the tradition of the East, August 15 is the Dormition of the Theotokos, or the Falling Asleep of the God‑bearer. There is no shadow of death or gloom in the theology, since this is seen as a transformation of Mary’s life into a heavenly and immortal existence. There is a sense in the tradition that she who made earth heavenly and exalted the human race by her faithfulness is glorified today. A persistent legend among Orthodox Christians tells how all the disciples, except Thomas, who was preaching in India, were present at Mary’s death and burial, and sat by the tomb for three days. On the third day, Thomas saw Mary’s body rising to heaven. She greeted him as “my friend,” and he was escorted by angels to proclaim her assumption to the others, who then realized her tomb was empty. Thus Thomas, the one who expressed doubt at the resurrection of Christ, received a gift from Mary: the chance to proclaim resurrection faith to the disciples.

Our Tuesday evenings run from 6:45-9:00 pm St. Michael - Archangel Hall, Elizabeth

Acts is a story of how a few Christians empowered by the Holy Spirit carried the Good News of Jesus Christ to the ends of the earth. They faced secular forces, internal strife, hostile crowds, and through it all they proclaimed the Kingdom of God to a broken world, and the love of God to a broken humanity in need of healing. Our host, Jeff Cavins, an American Catholic evangelist, author and biblical scholar, will guide us through the joys and struggles of these early Christians as they live their lives in Christ and apply it to us today.

Our evening begins with a light dinner, prayer, a video presentation, and a small group discussion.

There is no cost for these events, however a good will donation is greatly appreciated. A workbook will be available for purchase.

Please contact Sue at [email protected] or 412-926-8412 to register, and joins us

What is the R.C.I.A.? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a way for adults . . . • who would like to learn more about and/or become a member of the Catholic Church. • who have never been baptized or

have been baptized in another faith and are interested in the Catholic Church.

    • who are Baptized Catholics (over 18 years old) and have not received the Sacraments of Confirmation, Eucharist or Reconciliation.

    • who are married to a Catholic and attend Mass but just don’t know what the next step is to become a member of the Catholic Church.

Have Questions, need more information, or want to register, please call Fr. Wagner, 412-751-0663. The RCIA Journey will begin in mid-September. The experience of learning with other adults in a relaxed atmosphere has been a lifetime high point for many who have been a part of the RCIA in the past. There is no charge, and there are no tests. Moreover, those making this RCIA Journey of Faith are accompanied by members of the parish family team, some of whom attend each week with them. The Parish Team is an important part of the Journey and welcoming new members.

Marriage Moments by Susan Vogt If your employment is home-based or you are a homemaker, you may have to create your own marriage friendly work policies. Agree about when you will take work phone calls or when it is time to stop WORK and relax together. Of course, if you have young children, you don’t fully control your time. You’re always on call. Have the spouse who works outside the home spell you.

Parenting Pointers by Susan Vogt Are your kid’s rooms filled with too much stuff? Some is necessary, educational, or comforting (like clothes, books, stuffed animals). But too much stuff can be suffocating and thwart creativity. Decide a limited space for each category. Let your child choose how to fill the allotted space - and give away the rest (or store it for a year before giving it away).

A Family Perspective by Bud Ozar Today Jesus warns us his Word will create conflict between parents and children. In a permissive society, which advocates individualism and consumerism, parents must continue to teach and live the gospel values of respect, service to others, forgiveness, generosity and compassion. A Christian family is a countercultural family.

Get fired up! - Author Jack London told the chilling tale of a brazen traveler who failed to take the peril of extreme weather conditions seriously. Building a proper fire in the right place might have kept him alive during a blizzard. Absent such a fire, the man’s fate was sealed. Jesus assures his friends that his mission in this world is to set such a blazing, saving fire in the hearts of believers. If we carry this passionate flame, no circumstances can endanger us. Contemplate an image of the Sacred Heart, and stoke the fire in your own! I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!

Monday, Aug 19; John Eudes, priest Judges 2:11-10; Matthew 19:16-22

God cares through your hands - During the plagues of 1627 and 1631, John Eudes cared for the sick, sleeping in a field to avoid infecting his fellow priests. Similar efforts made today are honored by World Humanitarian Day, commemorating 22 United Nations staff killed by a terrorist attack in Baghdad in 2003. Since then, more than 4,000 aid workers have been injured, kidnapped, or killed, targeted as they served more than 65 million people displaced from their homes and more than 26,000 civilians killed or injured in six countries. Learn more at World Humanitarian Day and ask yourself how you can help contribute to a more humane world today and every day. The Lord would be moved to pity by their groaning.

Tuesday, Aug 20; Bernard, abbot Judges 6:11-24a; Matthew 19:23-30

Saintly? - It’s complicated Bernard of Clairvaux was a brilliant and charismatic leader of the Cistercian monastic reform that encouraged a return to the original Benedictine life of prayer and manual labor. At the same time he was friend and mentor to powerful church leaders and was drawn into the geopolitical struggles embodied in the Crusades. How to reconcile the image of the prayerful monk with that of spiritual cheerleader to a militant army of Crusaders? Church history is filled with contradictions—as is each one of us. We have the simple contemplative and the militant crusader living in our own heart. Which one shall we nurture? Amen, I say to you, it will be hard for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven.

Wednesday, Aug 21; Pius X, pope Judges 9:6-15; Matthew 20:1-16

Be a warm-hearted believer - Pope Pius X pastored the universal church from 1903 to 1914, a tumultuous period in world history, which saw traditional ways of life giving way, whether in the natural sciences, politics, or economic life, to new ways of thinking, organizing, believing. Though most commonly remembered as a staunch traditionalist and anti-modernist, Pius should also be remembered for his simple, unpretentious lifestyle (he never lost sight of his poor roots), his personal warmth and love of children, and his generous charitable outreach. After the horrific Messina earthquake of 1908, the most destructive earthquake ever recorded in Europe with some 100,000 casualties, Pius is said by one source to have filled the Apostolic Palace with refugees long before the Italian government acted. Make sure a warm heart is front and center in your own life of faith. Are you envious because I am generous?

Thursday, Aug 22; Queenship of Mary Judges 11:29-39a; Matthew 22:1-14

The sky is not the limit - Lumen gentium, Vatican II’s Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, declares the Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all guilt of original sin, on the completion of her earthly sojourn, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen of the Universe. Going to Orlando, Florida anytime soon? Visit the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe, a 2,000-seat church dedicated to the Queenship of Mary and established to serve the 30 million tourists who visit the Orlando area every year. Wish to be reminded of Mary’s connection to the whole universe, and why that will matter into the future? Visit nearby Cape Canaveral. The servants went out into the streets and gathered all they found, bad and good alike.

    Friday, Aug 23; Rose of Lima, virgin Ruth 1:1, 3-6, 14b-16, 22; Matthew 22:34-40

Care of the soul - Life isn’t easy. It’s good and beautiful, yes, but stressful, chaotic, and sometimes even devastating. Wouldn’t it be great to get away from it all? One might think that this is what Saint Rose of Lima did when she became practically a recluse in her parents’ house. She dedicated her life to solitude and a profound sense of solidarity with Jesus the Christ, especially the Suffering Christ. Yet within this calling, Rose found a spaciousness within herself to open a nearby room in the house to care for people in need. How do you experience this sacred dynamic of contemplative quiet and compassionate

Saturday, Aug 24; Bartholomew, apostle Revelation 21:9b-14; John 1:45-51

Caught up in prayer - If you met Jesus face-to-face and he saw right through you—straight into your soul—and told you exactly what you had been doing before meeting him, what would he see and what would he say? Would he judge that you were honest and good? That you had spent the prior moment in prayer? That’s what happened to the Apostle Bartholomew upon being introduced to Jesus. Let’s always be ready to be caught in the act of communing with God, with a pure heart, recognizing our King when he greets us. You will see greater things than this.
