Sonzogno Press (Milan) started publishing over 250 booklets in a series called "Le Cento Città d'Italia" (One-hundred towns in Italy) - describing actually many more than the just 100 promised by the title - as a revised and much improved reprint of the similar serial publication dated 1887. As the first publication had been an effort to explain and describe the newly unified country, trying to impose a national, unitary character to all its different sites and regions, the new publication stressed the magnificence of the country under the new Fascist regime. A somewhat redundant and stentorian phrasing of the text was the result, though the booklets can still be considered as a very nice introduction to a great many Italian sites. Each booklet was enriched by an average of about 40 pictures by local as well as nationally renowned photographers. As can be imagined, the Alinari brothers from Florence, as well as Brogi and Anderson from Rome, or Traldi (Milan) and the Diena brothers (Turin), are among the most often encountered names. Nevertheless, an name index of the various photographers whose pictures were chosen to illustrate the new publication has a much wider range. About 100 different names are quoted by the present index, considering only the first 50 booklets published. They are here listed with a reference to their hometown - when known - as well as with the number of the booklets containing some of their pictures. A full list of all the photographers will be eventually uploaded, as a first reference tool for researchers in photography during the early years of the Fascist regime in Italy. Though partial, we felt that our preliminary index could still represent a good introduction to the rich information of that source, that has been but recently acquired by the Visual Arts Research & Documentation Centre's Library from a private donor.
