This parcel occupies the former site of “Marylander Hill”, a 24 foot high promontory in the historic Gowanus marshes. The hill has been associated with colonial burials and a 1776 Revolutionary War Cemetery (The Marylander Burial Ground), recorded as having been near 3rd Avenue & 8th Street, based on a 1956 National Parks Service Archeological Report. Despite having been built over by chemical works and and a knitting mill, the rumoured burial site was never excavated. DESCRIPTION

This is a draft research map prepared by Eymund Diegel to test the accuracy of a new City data set - laser derived topographic modeling. It looks at the usefulness of the innovative 2010 Light Detection and Ranging 3 Dimensional Model for New York City, also known as “LIDAR”, where laser beams on airplanes are used to create an extremely high resolution terrain model. The test site was a seemingly flat concrete slab at 170 8th Street, next to Third Avenue. Grassroots Balloon Aerial Mapping showed crack patterns in the concrete slab prompting further research. An unusual pattern of “mounds” may reflect the site’s rumored past history as a burial site.
