The "a n im a ls " , as they are n icknam ed, emphasized o ther ac tiv ities , and not in tra m ura l sports th is year. W ith only one f irs t— in V o lleyb a ll— Phi Delta Theta s till placed h igh in the overall in tra m ura l standings.

The o ther a c tiv ities em phasized were the social life and student po litics . The years social life started w ith a Hawa iian Party in the fa ll, ended w ith a W estern Party in the spring, and the " I " Ball in between.

W ith Dale Schwanke and George Cole being members o f C entra l Board, and Dan Foley, the new ed ito r o f the K aim in , the Phi Delts p lunged whole hearted ly in to student government.

On the side, the bro thers found tim e fo r a c iv ic pro ject o f revam ping the com m unity 's L ittle League diam onds in the spring.

The purpose o f any fra te rn ity m ust be to prom ote bro therhood by working , learn ing and liv ing together. Since the local Sigma Chi chap ter gained its charte r in 1906, it has been proving its w orth to the com ­m u n ity and campus.

The house was ins trum en ta l in in s titu tin g the D ick Stokes Fund, a p ro ject to raise money to a id a l it t le dea f ch ild . It also sponsors a Boy Scout Troop, and a p a rty where the Sigma C h i's get to know the people around the neighborhood better.

On campus, three C entra l Board delegates are Sigma Chi's. The house took f irs t in in te r fra te rn ity foo tba ll and sw im m ing, and second in sk iing.

O ther fun c tio ns and p ro jects are the w e ll-known Derby Day, a French Party, the Sweetheart Ball, and a needy ch ild ren 's Christm as party.

College students are young adults, as young adu lts many, n a tu ra lly fa ll in love and get married. The f irs t problem o f the newly m arried student is to provide a home fo r his fa m ily w hile he a ttends school. The problem is solved because the univers ity provides 2 fa m ily housing fa c ilit ie s — the strips and the X 's.

The s tr ip houses are several 1-story p re fabrica ted

houses near Cam pbell park. These were b u ilt to provide liv ing quarters fo r the fam ilie s o f W o rld W a r II veterans.

The X 's (C raighead & Sisson A partm ents) are the new fa m ily dorms next to M o u n t Jumbo. The modern a rch itec tu re and spacious quarters are much h igher on the ladder o f good liv ing .
