This log book is designed to be used as a record ofpersonal progression throughout the Hillwalking elementof One Programme. Once a scout or scouter hassucessfully completed stage 7, they may choose toprogress with the more formal qualifications of theMountainLeaderTrainingBoards(eitherBOSorMLTNI)atwhick stage they should transfer to the offical logbook ofthe scheme. If an individual does not desire to prusue aformal scheme than this log book canbe used up to stage9. It should be noted that whilst no formal training orqualifications are needed to progress beyond stage seven, the standard of evaluation is based upon that of themountain leader assesment and that there a number oftechniques assesed that most candiates only experenceduring fromal training such as securing steep groundwhichshouldnotbeconfusedwithrockclimbingability

Once a scout or scouter has completed all elements of astage/ The assessor should sign both the individual stage, and complete the summary sheet at the front of thelogbook. If elements of the stage have been signed off byanother assessor the awarding assessor should ensurethat canidate is still competent in these skills at the timeoffinalassessmentastheyaretheawardingassessor

NotesandInstructions

Clarification on the Camping Adventure Skills Requirements &AssessmentMethodologyThe first recommendation is that the longerexpeditions in the A4Adventureskills manual are used in the assessment process as they contain greaterdetail and more concise notes than the poster book, or the summarystatements at the front of each adventure skill chapter. The informationbelowshouldbeusedtofurtherclarifywherenecessary. All Hikes logged should have some element of off trailexperience andthoseabove stage5 shouldinclude navigation legs in off trail locations, in differentweathers and visibility conditions. For stage 7 and upwards the log boosshouldincludeevidence of hiking in different geographic locations andshouldnot includeduplicate routesunless theyinclude very different conditions, i.e.winterconditionsornightnavigationThese recommendations and guidelines are for going forward and the teamwill assess historic experience on a case by case basis considering the bestpracticeatthetimeIt must also be remembered that those who hold Mountaineering Irelandqualifications such as mountain skills that the syllabus of such awards onlycover the navigation, day equipment and basic weather elements, and doesnot cover the broader scope of the scouting award including the campingelements

AssessmentProtocolsWhist there are interim instructions on who can assess and to what levelissued by the NYPC, the suggested best practice for this adventure skill isalways the‘two down rule’where youth members and scouterscan train andassessto two stages below their stageup toassessment for stage7. ForStage8and9a peer review protocol is used. In practice 2 stage9’s signoff a stage8 and two different stage9’s thensign of the stage9, thusensuring all stage9’shaveawellroundedapproachtotheskill.

The competency statements as outline in the A4Manual andclarified in thisdocument are the minimum standards required and candidates shouldcomplete all competency statements fully and be able to repeatedlydemonstratealloftheskillsateachstageAdventure skills are not section specific and as such require a group not asection approach. It is recommended that the Group Council appoint oneperson take responsibly for the camping adventure skill, ensuring that thewhole group isapplyingtheskills and stages evenly across all sections. IdeallyagroupdatabaseshouldbemaintainedforalladventureskillsA Hillwalking logbook is now available and the idea is that the logbook ispresentedasparttheassessmentAny requirements for the number of nights camped should be in addition tothepreviousstageAssessors should satisfy themselves that the candidate for assessment doesholdthestageprevioustothestagebeingassessedMembers being assessed should indicate that they want to be assessed aspartof theplanningof theactivity so they canbe observe. Badges shouldnotbe handed out or competency statements signed off in logbooks forattendanceonaneventwithoutapre-plannedassessment
