Year One1:1 Netbook Project

What did it look like?

Page 3: One to One and Web 2.0 - Making the Best of Both

Netbooks• What are they?

o Small "notebooks" that are intended more for the internet

o Just the basicso 3 USB ports; wireless; No CD driveo limited software; majority is freeo memoryo camerao SD card slot (camera memory)

• Where did they come from? o Grant from REFo $400/netbook and licensingo 2 years of planningo Note - Smallest size in grade level in years!

Findings Quality vs quantity - netbooks

Findings• Hardware - easy to use, durable• Size  - portable

o screen sizeo keyboard size

• Software - some learning curve• Bandwidth (infrastructure assessment needed)• Additional tools - Flip video camera (PTA),

scanner/printer, interactive white boards, projectors

• Responsible Use Policy updated• 5 year tech plan for the vision• Kept a log on Google Docs for our team

Page 5: One to One and Web 2.0 - Making the Best of Both

Before                    • Availability - Lab/cart needed to be pre-scheduled•  Couldn't keep in classroom for extended period of

time.o incomplete projects/lessons; limited by timeo limited quality of projects (less depth;

differentiation)• Used one computer per class for timely, spontaneous

events (passive)• Paper management within school • Difficult to continue working on material between

school and home.• Work/projects not easily shared with

home/community) • Traditional learning tools

Content

• More active participation as opposed to passive.

• Lessons can be flexible to deal with current events.

Skills

• Quality of projects include Higher Order of Thinking and processing Skills. – Going beyond the basics or set-up.

Allows movement to higher levels of thinking skills.

 • practice word processing --> useful word processing

• data collection --> data manipulation, interpretation

• practice using 'canned' research --> real research

•repetition and recall --> analysis, evaluate, create own content

Page 15: One to One and Web 2.0 - Making the Best of Both

Skills

• Following ISTE standards – NETS• Past perceptions – technology skills were basic

operations; practiced in isolation. Now integration is key.

Students don't go home saying "We used the computers today!” What are they saying instead?

Page 16: One to One and Web 2.0 - Making the Best of Both

Get the Word Out!

– Footer in documents that state the standards addressed in the document/project.

– Open house – posters and cards displaying the ISTE standards addressed in the project/work. We had the follow card all over the room on projects displaying the standards addressed with each piece.

Notes

• Over the years, I've been impressed with the quality of answers I get from the online quizzes versus paper quizzes. For example, the answer to one question is 'plants.' Here's one student's answer to the question:

• The poisonous gases in our ancient atmosphere changed

to the gases today because of plants. When plants started to grow on Earth they released oxygen and that is how our atmosphere changed form poisonous gases to what it is today.

Notes• 1:1 programming / management: – Figure out need, then get to know the tool – purpose for tool and clear assessment (what do we want to do

and why are we doing it?) – responsible behavior must be taught / modeled (use in school

may be different from personal use) – "cheating" on blog assignments / overwriting has not been a

problem– blog - more equal class participation ("shy” students

empowered, must be active) – using online tools a "privilege not a right" – real audience = quality material (authentic) – flash drives or online storage space needed – peer-peer learning increased with netbooks – one school: netbooks stay in classroom, students rotate /

switch netbooks (management / safety)

Notes

Technology is not the special part of the curriculum that needs to be included, but an available tool that allows a complete cycle of learning.

   retrieve information, research

apply what they've learned  create content/product

sharing /publishing  feedback and reflection
