TISHREI - CHESHVAN 5773/OCTOBER 2012 VOLUME 32 / NUMBER 10 THE VOICE IS PUBLISHED MONTHLY On Sunday evening, October 7 th , our congregation will celebrate on Simchat Torah a truly historic event, the dedication and celebration of our new Torah. What makes this even more special is that over 1000 members of Temple Judea have written letters in the Torah! Yet, our challenge is: what happens after October 7? How do we channel the enthusiasm and spirit of the High Holy Days blended with the incredible memory of Simchat Torah into the entire calendar year? One way is to carefully read our new program guide and resolve this New Year not only to peruse this beautiful booklet but to learn from the host of scholars who will be teaching us Torah. Mordecai Kaplan, a great scholar and innovator of our past century, reminds us that "Torah is the life and length of our days.". Kaplan reflected on the brilliance of the twelfth century scholar Moses Maimonides who looked at Torah as more than its magnificent scroll. Torah is truly the ongoing story of our people, an emotional center of our own stories, our own journeys, our comings, our goings, and our becomings. Contemporary Torah Scholars such as Dr. Norman Cohen, teach us that Torah is indeed a powerful spiritual source of light filled with secrets inviting us to learn and through learning reflect on what impact we can bring to enhance the sacred. How we can bring holiness into our lives. Etz Hayim and the Torah: A Women's Commentary help to take the lessons we learn from the portion of the week and translate it into making wise choices and thoughtful life decisions. Be assured that when you take what could be called a leap of faith and experience Torah at our study group on Saturday mornings and through our compelling array of scholars, through our Minyan services Mondays and Thursdays, and through our wonderful classes, from Talmud to Jewish Thought to Kabalah to Mussar, Torah will make a difference in your life this New Year. Hazak, Hazak, may our lives and the life of Temple Judea be truly strengthened this New Year. May the many voices of Torah bring light to your lives! A message from the Board

Mitzvah 613: Over the past year our temple family has had

the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in writing our very own Torah. I had to privilege of co-chairing this event and observing many of you complete letters, in awe, and it has been overwhelmingly meaningful. So many of you expressed to me, how incredibly moving your personal experiences have been. We as a Temple Judea family should take this experience and continue to grow together; for without any one letter, our Temple’s Torah would not be complete. From young to old, we each brought our own vision and interpretation of the experience, we each became a part of creating a piece of our heritage. I hope that, as a temple, our newest edition continues to draw us together as an even tighter family.

Our closing Torah ceremony which will take place over Simchat Torah is a beautiful way to welcome our family’s new Torah to its home. We hope to see you all there.

Shabbat Shalom,

Leigh Routman Board Member

SISTERHOOD New Year, New Opportunities, New Friends

Our high holidays are behind us and we begin the New Year renewed by our wonderful services and time spent with our friends and family. The holidays were a time for introspection and thinking about our past and future. If you, like me, have no family in the area then your friends are who you turn to share the events in your life. There is no better place to make new friends than at our Sisterhood functions and by getting involved in the planning and staging of our events. We would like to have you contact us to help with a program and to get involved in what Sisterhood is all about. October 29

th: 5:00PM - Chapter Two Ladies of the Night

will have a Meet and Greet at Spotos. This is a great time to meet women coming together to plan for a newly forming group. Get in on the ground floor and get involved. November 8

Madison Wood’s D’var Torah: But my mom wasn’t going to disappear like the others did. She lived in NC where there are not many Jews. When my Mom was asked by people about her religion, she looked at it as an opportunity to educate, rather than hide. She even had a roommate tell her that she had horns on her head because she was Jewish. Rather than my Mom pretending not to be Jewish and trying to fit in, she stayed true to herself. Mattan Shochat ‘s D’var Torah: After studying this Torah portion I know how I want to react the next time someone does a mistake that effects me – I want to be able to forgive and let go of any anger understanding that people make mistakes and that being able to forgive them is important. I found a quote online that really reflects my story. Author David Riggdes says that “True forgiveness is not an action after the

fact, it is an attitude with which you enter each moment.”

During the past four years, TJ has been blessed to showcase the artwork of our members. We are grateful to Nina Golub who oversaw these efforts, laying the groundwork for the next steps in bringing a broader art program to our TJ community. We look forward to events where TJ members will kvel and share their creativity.

SOCIAL ACTION Hi, my name is Andrea Abramowitz. My husband, Michael, and I, along with our three children have been TJ members for a year. We try to take part in all of the social action committee activities because we enjoy doing mitzvot by helping those in need, and meeting amazing people during the process. Our family has a personal cause that we are supporting – It’s Juvenile Arthritis (JA). Not many people know about it. There are about 300,000 children in the U.S. afflicted by JA. Our seven-year-old son, Ethan was diagnosed with JA shortly after his hip started hurting him a year ago on Halloween. His type of arthritis is called Juvenile Spondyloarthropathy, which can cause inflammation of the spine, surrounding tendons and ligaments, as well as other joints. Over the past year, Ethan has enjoyed being a Cub Scout, playing tennis, soccer, baseball and golf. People generally see a joyful, energetic, athletic seven-year-old boy. But, there is the side of Ethan that most people don’t see - the little boy who becomes lethargic, unable to walk, sad and irritable, when his arthritis flares. I’m writing this article from a room in Miami Children’s Hospital, where Ethan and I have been for two weeks. We are about to be transferred to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. We learned that Ethan also has developed both Eosinophillic Esophagitis (EoE) and Eosinophillic Gastritis (EG). Ethan started to lose weight and reached the point where he could not swallow. He now has a feeding tube to give him the nutrition he needs. While EoE tends to be attributed to food allergies, we don’t currently know the cause in Ethan’s case. My goal is to help spread awareness about these little known autoimmune diseases. I hope to educate people and share knowledge with others who might be going through similar situations. I also want to help raise money for research so that one day there is a cure. We have created a team in Ethan’s honor, and we will be walking at the 2012 Arthritis Walk and “Arrf-ritis" Dog Walk on Saturday, Nov. 10, at John Prince Park in Lake Worth. Our family goal is to have at least 50 people walking with us on our team. Please go to the website:

http://2012awlakeworth.kintera.org to sign up

for our team, “Ethan’s Electric Heels.” You can simply have fun and walk with us, donate money…or do both! We look forward to having

you join our team.

We have just experienced the beauty of our High Holidays and a

period of introspection. Some of you have promised yourself that

you will reach out to others and the Caring Community wants to

help you complete that promise. Caring Community reaches into

our own community by visiting those in hospitals or recuperating

at home. We have also begun reaching in to our members who

have lost loved ones with notes and phone calls. We are looking

for volunteers who will write notes of healing, who will greet

newcomers at morning minyan and at Friday night services and

who will call to “check in”.

We look forward to hearing from
