Solutions to address Bible issue

Press statement by Datuk Seri Idris Jala , Minister in the Prime Minister sDepartment, on a 10 -point solution.

THE Government confirmed that it has been in dialogue with the Christian groups tolook into their specific requests on the Bahasa Malaysia/Indonesia Bible and alsoother religious issues. Taking into account the polarity of views of the differentreligious groups, including the Muslims, the Government decided on a 10-pointsolution.

1. Bibles in all languages can be imported into the country, including BahasaMalaysia/Indonesia.

2. These Bibles can also be printed locally in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and

Sarawak. This is a new development which should be welcomed by the Christiangroups.

3. Bibles in indigenous languages of Sabah and Sarawak su ch as Iban, Kadazan -Dusun and Lun Bawang can also be printed locally and imported.

4. For Sabah and Sarawak, in recognition of the large Christian community in thesestates, there are no conditions attached to the importation an d local printing of theBible in all languages, including Bahasa Malaysia/Indonesia and indigenous languages. There is no requirement for any stamp or serial number.

5. Taking into account the interest of the larger Muslim community, for PeninsularMalaysia, Bibles in Bahasa Malaysia/Indonesia, imported or printed, must have thewords Christian Publication and the cross sign printed on the front covers.

6. In the spirit of 1Malaysia and recognising that many people travel between Sabah and Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia, there should be no prohibitions andrestrictions for people who bring along their Bible and Christian materials on such

I think the Bible issue is very unfortunate, and in the spirit of Lent, it is time forsacrifice, reconciliation and forgiveness.

In our history, as a young nation, we achieved a lot in a short period of time, but wehave our shortcomings.

The Government and our civil servants are not perfect as indeed all human beingsare beautifully imperfect in the eyes of God.

And for all our shortcomings in handling the Bible issue, I hope the Christians wouldfind it in their hearts to forgive us.

In my Church at SIBKL, we have been praying for a Christian revival to take place inour country. For all the hurt that exists as a result of our differences, I believe that weneed healing, forgiveness and reconciliation in this country.

The Bible says in Matthew 18:21-22 Then Peter came to Je sus and asked, Lord,how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seventimes? Jesus answered: I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.

more than 1,000 "fellow ships," as the y call them, have been es tablished for

p eople from Muslim backgrounds. In fact, man y of the fellow ships had

already planted new fellowships, and those fellowships had plante d still

more. Many thousands of Muslims in this nation alone , then, had found faith in Jesus.

Several of these fellowships can b e traced ba ck to small netwo rks of Muslims who ha d

encountered Christ and in turn began s haring with family and friends w hat they had discovered.

In one case , a mi ddle-aged w orking m other had inductively studied a new tr anslati on of the

Bible for a few years. Among othe r language choices, the translation she used d id not refer to

Jesus as the "Son of God," due to confused and angry reactions from Muslims w ho mistakenly

believe this phrase means that the Father enga ged in sexual relations with Mary. To avoid this

misunders tanding, the new translation called Jesus "the Beloved Son who comes (or originates)

from God."

The woman, who eventually profess ed Jesus as Lo rd and Savior, began inviting friends and

family to read the Bible too . At first, about 10 pe ople met w ith her. This w as caus e e nough for

celebration, since Muslims in her country rarely study any religious bo oks o ther than the Qur'an

and the Hadith (collections o f Muhammad's s ayings and deed s). Three months later, anothe r

group formed nearby to discuss one Ne w Testament chapter per we ek, and an elderly member

of the family accepted the Good New s of Jesus. Within two yea rs, seven more reading groups

had sp rung up. Today, no one know s exactly how many such groups ha ve formed. But new

believers in Jesus have spread the message to nearby towns, and several hundred professions

of faith can be attributed to this netwo rk alone, according to a group of long-term field wo rkers

in the country.

These a nd many other Muslims live in places w here Bible translations ha ve bee n available in

their langua ges for decade s, even for more than a century. So why the sudd en surge o f interest

in Scripture? Some translators attribute the respo nse to the ne w Bible versions that use

message . Yet a dispute o ver the most faithful and

effective w ay to re nder the common biblical phrase

"Son of God" is dividing missionary from missionary,

scholar from scholar, in a time of evident mistrust

betw een Wes tern Christians a nd Muslims.It also

underscores ho w few Christians in the West

themselves unde rstand this common biblical title for

Jesus.

Compromise or ComprehensionBible trans lation and contextualization ha ve long divided Christians w orking to fulfill the Great

Commission. W hen missionary pionee r William Carey translated the Bible into Bengali in 1809,

he use d the Hindu word for the supreme being, Ishwar , to refer to God. Critics charged him with

making a fatal compromise in the name of comprehens ion. Toda y, "Son of God" is hardly the on ly

point of contention among missionaries to Muslims. For example, they also tangle o ver whethe r

Bible translations sho uld use Allah to re fer to God. Both s ides make a compelling case. Muslims

understand Allah in terms o f simple mono theism rather than the d ynamic Trinitarian theo logy

that Christians profess . Yet Allah , the wo rd for God that Muslims know from the Q ur'an, actually

predate s Islam. Some translators have recovered it so that Muslims reading Scripture for the

first time won't immediately reject the Bible as foreign to their culture.

Muslims believe all life originates fromAllah. Jesus is not an exception. Please read Surah 4:171. All the Qurancommentaries on this verse are unequivocal. From Allah in Islamdoes not come with divine qualities. Your argument equatingthe expurgation of "charity" f rommodern translations with deliberate removal of "Son of God" fromnew Bible translationsgeared toward Muslims, just to gain more converts, is moot.

Some writers have spoken of the termSon of God being "expurgated" "removed" "avoided" and so on. That is f alse andemotionally-charged language. Do we say that modern English translations have removed the word "charity" f romthe Bible, or isit true to say that "love" is a better translation of the Greek word "agape"? In the same way, in many languages there is atraditional word that w ould be understood to mean that God physically sired a child, and another one that speaks of closerelationship, care and protection. The second is closer to NT Greek meaning. But experts like Rick Brown are also recommendingthat translations use footnotes, glossaries and other helps alongside the text of the translation so readers can learn thetraditional terms and have the matter explained to them. Not mentioning these recommendations is simply fear-mongering anddistorting the position of these people.

Oops. Mea culpa. The phrase which read "Isn't it high time to see that a poor theological root, i.e. that tw eaking information willsolve the moral problem?" Should have read, "Isn't it high time to see that a poor theological root, i.e. that of "tweaking"information, will not solve the moral problem" Think of the rich man and Lazarus. All the data, even someone coming back fromthe dead, w as said to be insufficient for breaking into the stone-hearted rebellion of the rich man's f amily. Thanks to the reader who saw what Samuel Zwemer the missionary to Islam, saw as the "Glory of the Impossible, " and thus rightfully noted the "notby might---even of our translations---not by power---even of the wisely worded footnotes---but by My Spirit says the Lord."Let's just admit that preaching in a graveyard, needs more than some courses on eloquence, but resurrection power.

Part 2 of 2 Dramatic fruit on which root? Fast forward to our new and improved translation theories. There is a lack of successin getting convertsso it is alleged. That problemmust be due to a lack of guidance. We will provide guidance by Islamicsounding phrases and so help people out of the realmof ignorance. Then we w ill declare massive successes in unstatedplaces, led by unstated individuals and unstated organizations. A few readers keyed on to the fact that the problemis notinformational, it is moral. The human heart is "darkened in its understanding," "cannot and will not understand spiritual things" andis dead in sin. (Thanks JA) Isn't it high time to see that a poor theological root, i.e. that tweaking information will solve themoral problem. Neither w ill footnotes, for that matter. My prayer is, "Lord Jesus, give me fruit that will remain, also in the Muslimworld." A modern-day John Knox might have added, "Give me the Muslimworld or I die."
