Donate Life Rose Parade® Float2014 Floragraph Sponsored by Ryan Viator’s Legacy

Following their life-changing experience as participants in the 2013 Donate Life Rose Parade Float campaign, the family of Ryan Robert Viator is pleased to offer the nation’s organ, tissue and eye recovery organizations an opportunity to nominate a donor family for a Floragraph on the Donate Life float in the 2014 Rose Parade.

Ryan Robert Viator of Lafayette, La. was a loving and tenderhearted young man with a great spirit of adventure and belief in staying healthy. At the age of 20, he was the proud owner of a health club in his hometown that inspired others to live healthy lifestyles. On April 7, 2000, Ryan’s life ended, but three others were able to live thanks to the donation of Ryan’s liver and kidneys. Ryan was never able to realize two of his dreams: flying in a fighter jet and visiting California. Donation made both possible, as one of his recipients is a retired Air Force pilot and his floragraph portrait was featured in the 2013 Rose Parade.

The Donate Life Float CampaignThe Donate Life Rose Parade Float campaign, a national program of the OneLegacy Foundation, is supported by more than 120 official sponsors, including organ and tissue recovery organizations, tissue and eye banks, hospitals, transplant centers and affiliated organizations. Last year’s Donate Life float was seen by an estimated 800,000 parade spectators and more than 30 million U.S. TV viewers, and tens of millions more heard about the float’s lifesaving mission in broadcast and print news stories about the float and its participants. The 125th Rose Parade, themed Dreams Come True, will take place on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at 8:00am PST.

Nomination and Selection ProcessThe honoree will be selected based on a range of criteria, including the requirement that the donor must have been under 30 years of age at the time of donation. Any connections to the Ryan Viator’s interests and passions will be considered as well. The nomination form and requested high quality photo (headshot) of the donor (see nomination form) must be received by Friday, August 9, 2013. The nomination and image may be emailed to [email protected] or mailed to the address below, Attn: Annie Kiefhaber. The organization nominating the family chosen to be honored with a floragraph will be notified by August 16, 2013.

ExpectationsThe opportunity for your loved one to be honored with a floragraph comes with several expectations. In particular, Floragraph Families are participants in the most inspiring float in one of the most-watched events in the world, and as such are commonly the subject of media stories in the weeks leading up to the parade. Thus, all Floragraph Families are expected to be available for media interviews as opportunities arise. In addition, Floragraph Families and their guests have the opportunity to attend special Donate Life events in Pasadena from Dec. 29 through New Year’s Day. Please note that while the Floragraph Sponsorship has been made possible by a generous contribution from Ryan Viator’s Legacy, the transportation, local lodging and event ticket costs for a party of two (approximately $2,500 to $3,000) are the responsibility of the nominating organization.

Requirements Nominated families must have been approached for and authorized donation on behalf of their

loved ones or supported their loved one’s donor designation. The honoree need not have necessarily had their organs, eyes or tissues recovered or transplanted.

The honoree must have been under 30 years old at the time of donation. Floragraph family members should be comfortable speaking to the media and must report to

media opportunities on a timely basis. On occasion between Dec. 26 and Dec. 30, TV morning shows require reporting to the studio or locations at a very early hour.

The family must provide a high-quality headshot of the honoree to serve as original artwork for the floragraph. The image will be enlarged to fill the 12” x 16” floragraph canvas, so a higher-quality original image is necessary for best results (see nomination form for details).

Donate Life Rose Parade® FloatAll About Floragraphs

Continuing a tradition that began in the 2008 Rose Parade, Donate Life’s 2014 float entry will feature 72 “floragraphs” of organ, eye and tissue donors from across the country.

What is a floragraph?A floragraph is a portrait created with floral materials. The Donate Life float’s floragraphs are strictly memorial in nature.

Who is featured on the Donate Life floragraphs? The float’s Floragraph Sponsors select the deceased organ, eye and tissue donors who are depicted on the portraits.

How large are the floragraphs? The size varies yearly depending on the float design. This year the floragraphs are approximately 12” x 16” oval.

How are floragraphs created?Photographs of the honored donors are converted into posterized images, which are printed and applied to a foam or wood backing. The portraits are then decorated in a method akin to “color by number.” Donate Life volunteers experienced in the art of decorating floragraphs guide the donors’ families or selected volunteers – many of them donor family members or transplant recipients – through the deeply meaningful process of bringing the floragraph portraits to life.

How do floragraphs inspire people to donate life?Floragraph families decorating portraits of their loved ones are compelling subjects to all involved. In fact, the donors and families honored with floragraphs have been the subject of hundreds of news stories capturing the families’ meaningful participation in the Rose Parade. Together with the Donate Life float’s riders, the floragraphs are the centerpiece of the national media campaign surrounding Donate Life’s annual Rose Parade float entry.
