Leaders bring out the best in others

-If you want your staff members to believe they are winners, then you must act as though they already are, treating them as

such. -Offer positive reinforcement, connect with them, take the time

to listen to them and get to know them. -Making a personal connection to get to know staff members on

a personal level is key.

Leaders find creative ways to recognize contributions and achievements

-No matter how large or small the achievement, all accomplishments are to be recognized and as Kouzes & Posner

(2012, p.272) state, "leaders find creative ways to celebrate accomplishments. They take time out to rejoice in reaching a

milestone."-Recognition does not always mean giving something tangible;

"praise and coaching are significant forms of recognition as well" (p.275).

Recognizing contributions is about being thoughtful

-The examples in the first video illustrate how feedback is incorporated regularly as recognition into the work environment

just as Father Dyer and David Cunningham recognized their staff in personal and meaningful ways. Some incorporate more formal ceremonies as was the case with David Cunningham's example, however, Kouzes & Posner remind us that "when you genuinely care even the smallest of gestures reaps huge rewards (p.294).

Spontaneous, enexpected rewards tend to be construed as more meaningful than expected formal ones.

Recognition should be personalized- Kouzes & Posner stress the importance of personalizing recognition, and state that "recognition should be personalized; otherwise, it will

quickly be forgotten and discounted. It should be made and expressed from your heart" (p.285). Examples given in the cohort responses

included hand written cards mailed to one's home; a photo taken with a thoughtful caption that was then sent out to all staff; a sweet treat

for someone who enjoyed a particular dessert.

QUESTION #1Please watch the video link below. While watching the

video, ask yourself, “What did these leaders do to employ effective recognition in their leadership practice? How effective were these leaders at

demonstrating recognition and in making their constituents feel valued and appreciated?

QUESTION # 2Both the Kouzes & Posner (2012) article and the Paterson, T. Luthans,

F. & Jeung, W. (2014) article underline the importance of creating supportive relationships at work (where there is a genuine belief in the importance of the interests of others). Drawing on your research and experience, explain how organizations can facilitate this expectation,

and what impact it has had on individuals and the organization.

SOMETHING TO PONDER…

Below is a TED talk given by a young man named Logan LaPlante, at The University of Nevada. It is entitled, “Hackschooling makes me happy.” As educators, it gives us insight into how children view formal education and if given the chance, how they would take ownership of their own learning.

Watch for some great insight
