The AoA (Administration on Aging) wants you to be Aware of Email Scams. The federal Agency for Community Living (ACL) has received/heard complaints about emails claiming they are from AoA and “Edwin Walker” requesting personal and financial information. These emails are a PHISHING scam. · The ACL will NOT ask for your social security number. · The ACL will NOT ask you to send a check to access a benefit. · Contact ACL at (202) 401-4634 to see if a message is valid. What is Phishing? Phishing seeks to obtain usernames, passwords, bank and other financial accounts, and credit card details (and… money), for malicious reasons. Phishers pretend to be trustworthy via electronic email and text messages; older and vulnerable adults can be subject to fraud and financial abuse. What to do if you think you have received a phishing email…. Your choices: delete the mail, or forward it to an organization that can either study the email for to see who sent it, or investigate the people who sent it. Examples include an IT security group that supports you, or a law enforcement organization that deals with cybersecurity. You may file complaints with:

CHALLENGES OF LIVING ALONE (CLA):

The Challenges of Living Alone group is open to anyone looking for support in successful solo-survival; we meet

regularly on the 4th Thursday of each month from 1 – 2 pm. Feel free to invite someone who you think might benefit

from the group.

On June 22nd, the discussion topic of the day will be Long Term Care (LTC) using information provided by the

Massachusetts State Division of Insurance.

We will cover issues such as:

What is meant by “Long Term Care”? What types of LTC are available?

What are the costs? And is there any way to plan to pay for it?

What is Long Term Care Insurance and how does it work?

Does my current insurance or Medicare help pay for LTC?

I’ve heard Medicaid or MassHealth might help pay but I don’t think I qualify.

Bring your questions! If we can’t answer it in our group, we will compile the questions and present them to an

attorney to answer on another day.

Circle of Hope

Does someone close to you (spouse/partner, child, grandchild, or trusted caregiver) withhold your medication, use

your money without permission, limit your phone calls, or tell you when or where you can go? Do you feel that

nothing you ever do or say is “right?” If so, you are not alone. Are you looking to be among peers in a safe space to

share your experience? Help us help you, by joining a free educational support group for seniors over 50 every

Tuesday from 11 am to 12 pm at the Danvers Council on Aging. This group is completely confidential. The group

is sponsored by CALL-NS, Confronting Abuse in Later Life-North Shore, a grant which aims to provide outreach

and education around abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation of elders fifty years and over. For more

information, contact: Carolyn Lewis at 978-624-2248

What is a MOON?

For people with Medicare, MOON has a new meaning: “Medicare Outpatient Observation Notice”. This newly

required notice must be given to some patients who have been admitted to a hospital for “observation”. Hospitals

are increasingly admitting patients under observation status.

You may be surprised to know that even if you are admitted to a hospital room overnight, you might not be an

“inpatient”. If you are under observation, you are considered an outpatient even though you may stay in a hospital

bed for many days. This changes how your Medicare coverage works. The MOON will explain the reason for

observation status and how it affects your Medicare coverage.

For example, if you have Original Medicare, with or without a Medigap plan, an inpatient hospital stay of at least

three days is needed to get any coverage for skilled nursing facility (SNF) care. If you are under observation, you

would not get any follow up SNF coverage paid for, even if it is medically necessary. However, if you are in a

Medicare Advantage plan or your doctor is in an Accountable Care Organization, the rules are different and the

three-day requirement may be waived.

For further assistance about this or any Medicare issue, contact the SHINE Program. Trained SHINE volunteers

offer free, confidential counseling on all aspects of Medicare and related health and drug insurance programs. To

schedule a SHINE appointment, call the Danvers Council on Aging at 978-762-0208. For other SHINE related

matters, call 1-800-AGE-INFO (1-800-243-4636), then press or say 3. Once you get the SHINE answering

machine, leave your name and number. A volunteer will call you back, as soon as possible.
