Integrated Project Delivery
“Empowering YOU to deliver WOW projects”
Why not adopt the Toyota Production System for
Construction?
Then we could eliminate the$500 Billion/year of waste in the North American building industry!
A way of THINKING? ….. Culture?
How?
A System?
Lean for Construction is based upon the “Toyota Production System”
It is called Integrated Project Delivery (IPD). It includes two main systems
Last Planner: Collaborative System for Constraint Free Work Flow Target Cost Design: Collaborative System for Design
A way of THINKING about eliminating waste

200% Productivity … 40% less Capital Cost … 30% less Operating Cost

Why Integrated Project Delivery
1. The building industry wastes $500 Billion per year2. Lean is a new way of THINKING about collaboration and
continuous improvement3. Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) is a project delivery approach
based upon lean principles 4. Think of it as the Toyota Production SYSTEM for Construction5. IPD includes a collaborative planning system (Last Planner)6. IPD includes a collaborative design system (Target Cost Design)7. IPD has proven results 200-40-308. IPD is supported by the Lean Construction Institute9. LCI - Canada has recently been formed
WOW Projects … Need just 3 Things
1.Team that are capable of a championship performance.
2.System that enables work to flow
3.Collaborate2 to create WOW
TEAM
A team becomes more than just a collection of people when a strong sense of mutual commitment creates
synergy, thus generating performance greater than the sum of the performance of its individual members.
Why not start with a Performance Team?

& Richardson College for the EnvironmentWe need to perform like the Oakland A’s
By build a TEAM by finding undervalued performance the Oakland A’s have consistently outperformed the competition and have demonstrated a new RULE
Rule: There does NOT need to be tradeoffs between cost and performance.
High Performance at Less Cost
The problem with the building industry is that we act like the New York Yankees when it comes to delivering GREEN building projects. We get out our checkbooks buy sexy green technologies, field a team of disintegrated high priced performers that stumble their way to Net 0 energy performance at a significant cost premium. It doesn’t have to be this way!
We need to adopt similar processes as Billy Beane did in baseball or Edward Deming, who proved that “Quality is Free” in the automobile industry.

Collaborate2

We need the TEAM to collaborate on setting a challenging but attainable TARGET
The TEAM needs the on right tools and a place for productive work to occur
We also need a virtual work room

& IBuilding Information Modeling can help to facilitate collaboration
Warning: BIM is LIKE another language if everyone speaks it, BIM can be GREAT or else it can be a barrier to effective communications
Collaboration enables the right work to be done
in the right order
This sums it up pretty good!
In his book “Quality is Free”, Philip Crosby says it all.
When we confront conventional wisdom that there is a tradeoff between quality and cost with optimism and an open mind we can do so much better!
“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”

Online Education ExpertDarren Cannel recently completed his
doctorate with a specialization in E-Learning and teaching online. Having recently retired as the administrator of the Saskatoon Catholic Cyber School, Darren and his team at TADO Group are working with companies like Integrated Designs to create and host E-Learning courses that provide engaging and productive learning experiences.
Darren is working with Murray to create an exceptional online Lean Learning Laboratory experience and training on the Integrated Project Delivery process. Darren is also a Google Certified Instructor, Microsoft Innovative Teacher and Cartoonist.
IPD Facilitation ExpertMurray Guy has spent the last 20 years learning how to deliver high performance projects based upon lean and integrated practices. He sits on the board of the recently formed Lean Construction Institute – Canada, owns and operates Integrated Design, a Project Management and Commissioning company that has experience on 10 IPD projects.
Murray is convinced that Integrated Project Delivery is the key to fixing a broken building industry that wastes $500B per year because of inefficiency and bad behavior. Murray’s goal is to help eliminate this waste and by demonstrating that we can deliver Net 0 buildings at Net 0 additional cost, enabling a transformation to a more sustainable building industry.
The Integrated Project Delivery process has huge potential, but is in serious need of practitioners, which is why he is devoting his time to building capacity in the emerging lean construction industry.
