Chosen Band

The band we have chosen to use is Weezer. We feel that Weezer are a very conventional rock band but carry some genre-challenging elements when it comes to their videos. This can be seen in the song Buddy Holly where the band re-enacts a scene in happy days (Synergy) and the song we’ve chosen Undone – The Sweater Song, where the entire video has been done in one shot. This gives us the opportunity to create a digipak for a very-conventional band which also allows us to experiment and be creative with the video itself.

Audience ProfileOur average target audience member is a male teenager, between the ages of 16 and 19 as this was the average age given by people who answered our survey. They are fans of alternative, indie and rock music, as these genres are all fairly similar and were the genres that the most amounts of people who took the survey said they liked. Of the people we surveyed, most people answered that they watch 0-4 music videos a week, so our average audience member would not be a person who watches loads of music videos, but when they do they do not mind whether or not a music video has a storyline. They do not like music videos to outlast the length of the song, and they like music videos to have comical and humorous aspects, as well as video of live performance of the song. From the survey responses it would appear that our average target audience member would be interested in watching a music video if there was something unique or special about it that would appeal to them. Examples of bands that they listen to are Weezer and Radiohead.

Synopsis Begins with a girl giving the main character of the video her phone number. As the boy is walking through town he drops it without realising. He feels a tug on the end of his wrist, it is his sweater unravelling (alluding to the title and lyrics of the song). The boy finds that the string is leading him somewhere so he follows it. This whole process is broken up with shots of the band performing and ‘messing around’ within the performance space. The string eventually leads to the room where the band have been playing, and the boy enters the room just after the band have left. The girl’s number is hanging on the microphone stand at the end of the string.

Why the idea works

The idea works because we are combining conventional, genre-specific elements with some unconventional ones which gives the typical Weezer finish to our promotional package. We have kept the typical photo-shoot album cover and live performance of the band, but we have also chosen to include a storyline within the video, much like the video for ‘The Good Life’ in which the video follows the life if a pizza delivery girl. We have chosen to follow the conventions of Weezer’s album artwork by featuring the band standing ‘awkwardly’ on the front cover, but have given it a twist by including the TV.
