Syracuse Florence Center Spring 2018 Registration Instructions

Online Registration: Wednesday, November 15–Tuesday, November 21 1. READ THIS ENTIRE PACKET and Registration FAQs before you attempt to register online.

2. CHECK NOW to see if you have any HOLDS that will prevent you from registering. Instructions on how to do this are found in this packet under the heading “Additional Registration Resources.”

3. FIND YOUR PERSONAL REGISTRATION START DATE in the message for Learning Content:Registration Appointment & Instructions in your online application. Florence registration appointments are not viewable in MySlice (Matriculated SU students: Note that any appointment reflected in MySlice is formain campus registration only). All Florence students’ registration appointments expire at 3:00 PM EST on Tuesday, November 21. After this time, an SUA Registration Hold will prevent you from making any changes to your schedule until you arrive in Florence. No schedule adjustment can occur after this time.

Course Changes IMPORTANT: The time slots of several courses have been changed since the release of the Academic

Packet. Please review the updated Time Schedule of Classes carefully as you plan your schedule to make sure that your course choices do not conflict with one another.

Italian Fashion and Food Stories will NOT be offered under the ITA 300.1 rubric in Spring 2018. It will, however, remain listed for credit under LIT 300.1.

Due to high demand for some courses, we are announcing additional sections for:

CER 221/CER 222 – Introduction to Ceramics I and II ECN 361 – Economics of European Integration HOA 203 – Italian Arts from Antiquity to Michelangelo LIT 400.1/REL 300.1 – Sex, Politics, and Religion in Italian Literature

New Course An additional course under the History and Political Science prefixes will be offered in Spring 2018:

HST/PSC 452 – Italy: Past, Present and Future Challenges

Italian Language Instruction Courses Study of Italian language is a program requirement. Note that your ITA registration is subject to review and confirmation in Florence during Orientation.

How to Select your Required ITA Class(es) for Registration

1. Identify your language level. (Matriculated Syracuse University students who have not taken ITA at SU must take the online placement exam, which will reveal your level). For visiting students, the placement exam is available but optional. Email Jeanne Chu at [email protected] for access.

2. All students at advanced levels register for 3 credit ITA courses (either ITA 325 or 421).

3. If you’re at the beginning or intermediate levels (equivalent of fewer than 4 semesters of college-level Italian), is your requirement for 6 or 3 credits?

Only students admitted to the following special programs may select 3 credits: Architecture, Engineering, Studio Arts, and Design. If you are eligible for 3 credits, decide whether you want to take ITA for the first half of the semester (Option A) or for reduced weekly hours for the entire semester (Option B).

If your requirement is for 6 credits, note that you will be registering for a 4-cr ITA class plus its 2-credit co-requisite. Be sure to register for the same section number for each class. For example: If you’re registering for ITA 101 z907, you must also select ITA 117 z907.

4. Identify the time slot that works with the rest of your class schedule (consult the Time Schedule to see what time slots are offered for your level of ITA).

5. Record the class number(s) for the level/time slot/section you want. If multiple time slots are offered, note that some sections may be full when you register. You will then need to find a different open section by referring back to the Time Schedule for other options. (Keep trying—there are enough seats for everyone!)

Courses Not Open for Online Registration (applies only to students NOT accepted to the Studio Arts Program)

Only Studio Arts Program students register online for Studio Arts courses.

If you have NOT been accepted to Studio Arts (SA) program, you will not be able to register for any Studio Arts course online, but rather in person upon arrival in Florence. Students who did not apply or were not accepted to the SA program may request to take ONE (1) studio arts class by placing their names on the class wait list in MySlice. In Florence, you'll learn more about the course requirements by attending the Studio Arts meeting during Orientation, when you’ll have an opportunity to meet and speak with the Studio Arts faculty and complete your registration.

Registration Restrictions

Course-specific Restrictions

During online registration, students may register for only one of these Art History courses:

HOA 203 – Italian Arts from Antiquity to Michelangelo HOA 320 – Italian Renaissance Art

Students may not register for both of the following Art History courses, since similar content is covered in each:

HOA 320 – Italian Renaissance Art HOA 424 – Sixteenth Century Italian Art and Identity

WARNING! “Class Search” and “My Planner” functions in MySlice

DO NOT WORK for Syracuse Abroad classes. The online registration system for Syracuse Abroad classes does NOT operate the same as it does for Main Campus classes. READ ABOUT THESE KEY DIFFERENCES:

You cannot use “Class Search” or “My Planner” for Florence classes since they do not appear in the MySlice searchable database. In order to register, be sure you are on the Enroll tab and enter the 5-digit class numbers highlighted on the Time Schedule of Classes.

DO NOT use the online Help during registration (some of these directions do not apply to Florence class registration). Instead, refer to the enclosed three-column chart that details how to add, drop, and swap classes, and the Online Enrollment Guide.

You cannot register for more than 16 semester credits during the online registration period (MySlice will prevent you from doing so). If you would like to take more than 16 credits, you may add a course in Florence, on a space-available basis, during the first week of classes.

In some cases, the system may not prevent you from registering for classes for which you are not eligible. Be sure to note any prerequisites indicated in the Time Schedule and course descriptions, and select only classes for which you are eligible. Please note that you may be dropped from any class for which you are deemed ineligible based on the transcript information available to us.

Page 4: Online Registration: Wednesday, November 15–Tuesday ... · CER 221/CER 222 – Introduction to Ceramics I and II ECN 361 – Economics of European Integration HOA 203 – Italian

Plan to register for only one of the three Sociology courses (only Sociology majors may register for two):

SOC 300.1 – The Italian Mafia SOC400.1 – Italy and Italians: A Cross-Cultural Study SOC/HST/WGS 454 – Family and Gender in Contemporary Italy

→ Students who disregard these directives will be administratively dropped from the additional restricted course. (The registration system will not prevent you from registering for more than one of these courses.) If seats remain open after all students have registered, you may request to add the second course after you arrive in Florence.

Credit Limit During online registration, MySlice will not allow you to register for more than 16 credits (4-5 semester courses). If you attempt to, you will receive the error message “Maximum term student unit load exceeded.” If you need to register for more than this typical course load (i.e., for 17–19 credits), email Jeanne Chu immediately, PRIOR to the registration period, to explain your academic need. If you would like (but don’t need) to take more than 16 credits, you may add a course in Florence on a space-available basis during the first week of classes.

→ This credit restriction will NOT affect students participating in the Greek Odyssey Signature Seminar. Our office will administratively register participants for this course after online registration concludes.

Special Enrollment Course: PSC 380.2 Politics of Globalization and Human Rights

As detailed in the Academic Packet you received last month, only students who listed the course among their Primary Course Selections and met all submission deadlines are considered for enrollment. More students requested this course than there are seats available. If you are eligible to register for PSC 380.2, Syracuse Abroad has notified you by email. Priority was given to Political Science and International Relations majors and minors, for whom the course is fulfilling a degree requirement other than elective or general studies credit.

Syracuse Abroad’s decisions on enrollment in this course are final.

Prerequisites

Other courses are restricted to students who have had prior course experience. Be sure you have met any prerequisites for a course you plan to take. Prerequisites are indicated on the Time Schedule (Restrictions/ Requisites/Notes column), with equivalent courses described for visiting students in each course description. If you do not meet a prerequisite, the system may not allow you to enroll. If you are blocked from a course during online registration and you believe you have the necessary background, email Jeanne Chu immediately with supporting information and documentation demonstrating that you are eligible for this course.

Special Program Courses

The following courses are open only to students accepted to the indicated special Florence program:

Courses in High Demand Based on information from submitted Student Advising Forms, some courses may reach capacity and close during registration. Be sure to have some alternative classes identified (and even placed in your Shopping Cart in MySlice), in case a class you would like to take is closed when you register. Listed below are classes with demand at or near capacity. It should NOT be interpreted as a complete list of all classes that may close:

ECN 361 – Economics of European Integration. Consider the second section added to the Time Schedule.

FST 402 – Feeding the City: Urban Food Systems. Consider the second section added to the Time Schedule.

HST/SOC 300.1 – The Italian Mafia

LIT 400.1/REL 300.1 –Sex, Politics, and Religion in Italian Literature. Consider the second section added to the Time Schedule.

NSD 452/HST 300 – Mediterranean Food and Culture. Consider the second section added to the Time Schedule.

PSC/PHI 413 – Identity & Difference

Registration Notes

Remember that a cross-listed course shares one 5-digit code across multiple prefixes. A number of courses have cross-listings (they can be registered under more than one prefix and/or number, such as CLA/LIT/REL 421). To prevent you from getting closed out of such a course under one prefix while seats under the other listings are still open, we have provided only a single class number for each cross-listed course. This means that you may want to take Classical Mythology for Literature (LIT) credits, or for Religion (REL) credits, but you will see it on your schedule in MySlice listed only as CLA 421. Don’t be concerned. Once

Page 6: Online Registration: Wednesday, November 15–Tuesday ... · CER 221/CER 222 – Introduction to Ceramics I and II ECN 361 – Economics of European Integration HOA 203 – Italian

you get to Florence, you will have an opportunity to correct your registration so that it reflects the course prefix you want or need.

Screening times for Film/Literature courses will be determined when you are in Florence. Both FIL 300.5/LIT 400.5 (Contemporary Cinema: Ideology & Pleasure) and FIL 300.2/LIT/QSX/WGS 400.2 (New Queer Cinema in Europe) include mandatory film screenings outside of the stated class time. You do not select your preferred screening time when you register online. Screening times will be determined in class in consultation with the professor.

Wait lists require action on your part upon arrival abroad. If you are on a wait list for a course, this will be addressed in Florence during schedule adjustment. Once you’re in Florence, you must attend the first class session and speak with the instructor to demonstrate continued interest in the course.

Make sure you are registered for at least 12 credits not counting any wait-listed courses. This is necessary in order to fulfill both Italian immigration and Syracuse Florence program requirements.

Schedule adjustment takes place after you arrive in Florence. You will receive a copy of your schedule in Florence, which you will then be asked to confirm. During the first week of classes, you will have an opportunity to make changes to your registration—drop and add classes—with instructor permission. You will not schedule-adjust online. (An SUA Registration Hold prevents you from making changes to your registration once the Florence online registration period ends). There are no exceptions to this policy.

You will receive instructions on the schedule adjustment process when you arrive in Florence.

Study Tours and Course Fees Some courses include required study tours, site visits, or activities that are an integral part of the course. As you select your courses and build your schedule, you will need to review the Course-Related Fee Sheet, which will be issued to all Florence students very shortly. You must share it with your parents/guardians if they are financially responsible for your fees. Fees to cover the costs of supplies and mandatory field study are charged automatically to your Bursar account when you register.

If you register for any course with a mandatory study tour, you must participate in this field study.

When schedules conflict for field trips of two different classes for which you’re registered, you will select the trip for one, and be given alternative work by the professor of the other. Expenses for the trip not taken will be refunded.

Syracuse Abroad Personal Travel Policy DO NOT plan personal travel until you arrive in Florence and know when you may be required to take part in a class-related study tour, make-up classes, Signature Seminar sessions, exam periods, and other academic commitments. These activities are mandatory and should be your first priority as you plan. Syracuse Florence professors are under no obligation to accommodate travel that is unrelated to coursework. If you participate in such travel during scheduled classes, missed classes will be counted as unexcused absences.

Checklist: How to prepare to register for classes

What to do BEFORE your registration appointment:

□ Be sure you know your NetID and Password so you can access MySlice for course registration. If you have not used MySlice before, or if you have not activated your account or have forgotten your password, you can set up a new account or reset your password at the IT Services website. You’ll need your SUID number to activate your NetID. (Visiting Students: You can find your SUID number on your Syracuse Abroad application home page.) If you have activated your account but forgotten your Net ID, consult the NetID self-service site.

□ Check to see if you need to verify and/or update contact information on MySlice. You may also have to acknowledge that you have read the ‘Know the Codes’ document. Log into MySlice, select any of the links in Student Services and you will automatically be forwarded to any items that must be reviewed/updated.

□ Check for holds that will prevent you from registering (see “How to View Holds”).

□ Confirm your schedule using the following materials:

The Student Advising Form (SAF) that you uploaded to your online application

The Time Schedule of Classes

□ Remember you will need a time slot for your required Italian class.

□ Check prerequisites in course descriptions and on the Time Schedule. Do not select any course for which you are not eligible. Syracuse Abroad reserves the right to drop you from any course for which you are deemed ineligible based on the transcript information available to us.

□ Record the Class Numbers (yellow-highlighted 5-digit number found in the first column of the Time Schedule). Do not select courses whose meeting times conflict.

Special Enrollment email notification regarding PSC 380.2.

□ Remember, only students who have received such an email will be able to register for PSC 380.2 (Politics of Globalization and Human Rights).

□ Before your registration appointment, add your course selections to your Shopping Cart in MySlice (refer to the Online Enrollment Guide). While you will only initially register for 4–5 semester courses (12 to 16 credits), you can also put some alternative selections in your cart. Once you have access to register, log back into MySlice and click the boxes next to your first-choice courses and ‘ENROLL’ to register for classes. If you are unable to get into one or more classes, your alternative courses will still be in your cart for selection.

□ If you are a matriculated Syracuse student and have not taken any ITA courses at SU nor brought in Italian language transfer or other credit, you must take the online Italian placement exam. You may also want to review these FAQs regarding placement exams.

For visiting students, the exam is available but optional. You may request access to SU’s online placement exam by emailing Jeanne Chu at [email protected]. (Please do not request access via the [email protected] email address.)

Registration Instructions You must finish registering by 3:00 PM, Tuesday, November 21.

Use MySlice: http://myslice.ps.syr.edu/

As You Register… Use your copy of your Student Advising Form (with the yellow-highlighted Class Numbers found on the Time Schedule of Classes recorded for each course) and the Registration Instructions that follow. Go online to http://myslice.syr.edu. The following will explain things you may note as you register:

Some courses may reach their enrollment limit and you may find that you are unable to register. You may have the option of adding your name to a Wait List. Wait lists are resolved in Florence; if space opens up during schedule adjustment in Florence, students on wait lists may be able to register for the course. Priority goes to majors, then minors, by class level Wait-listed students need to demonstrate their continued interest in a course by attending the first class session and speaking with the instructor. If you are closed out of a course that is fulfilling a specific academic requirement which cannot be met by another course AND which you must take this semester in order to graduate on time, you should document this need by having your home college submit the Academic Need Verification Form. We will make every effort to meet your confirmed academic needs.

You will not be able to register or make changes to your schedule online after November 21. An SUA Registration Hold will be placed on your record preventing this.

And some last parting thoughts:

For Troubleshooting… See the following page for help.

To ensure the accuracy of your schedule:

Make sure all the sections start with “Z9 ” (this identifies them as Florence classes). If you’re an undergrad, make sure your Term Credits Total is at least 12 credits to confirm your

status as a full-time student and meet Italian immigration requirements. Do not include credits for wait-listed courses in this total.

Be sure to verify the section number of any course that has more than one section to ensure that you’ve registered for the correct section.

Troubleshooting and Tips

Cannot see STUDENT SERVICES application: Within the Orange header of the MySlice there is a CONTENT link. Click this link. The MySlice content page is displayed. In the middle of the page is a pagelet with section names listed with check boxes to their left. Click into the check box next to STUDENT SERVICES. Click the SAVE button at the bottom of the page. The MySlice Homepage is re-displayed and the STUDENT SERVICES section has been added. If the STUDENT SERVICES section is not a selection option, contact the ITS help line at 315-443-2677.

Availability: MySlice is scheduled to be available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Regularly scheduled system downtimes will occur for various applications in the portal. Check the ANNOUNCEMENTS on MySlice for advance notification of downtimes. The Information Technology Services (ITS) help line is available during regular University business hours at 315-443-2677.

Timeout: There is an inactivity timeout on the web. There will be a warning message displayed after 55 minutes of inactivity: “Your session is about to time out…” After 60 minutes of inactivity, MySlice will “timeout,” logging you out of the portal. A dialog box will be displayed with the message: “Your Session has ended”. Click the yellow OK button, and log out of your browser. Restart your browser and re-enter the URL http://myslice.ps.syr.edu to log into MySlice using your NetID and password.

Printing Web Pages: Click inside the open page. Select Print Frame from File menu. When prompted, click OK.

Scrolling and Moving: On some web pages, you may have to scroll to the right or left to view all content on page. This is especially important to remember when building a large Time Schedule consisting of multiple-component classes.

NetID and Password: You must have an active NetID and password to use MySlice. You only need to activate your NetID one time. To activate your University NetID and password – your keys to the University's computing network – you can follow the simple steps outlined on the University's NetID Web page: http://selfserv.syr.edu/selfserv/home

Terms: Autoenroll: When one part of a course is automatically added to your schedule when you register for the other part. When you drop the Enrolled part, both parts are removed from your schedule.

Related Part/Component: One course set up with multiple parts. You need to select each part when registering. You will usually select the first section and then have to select from a prompt list of “related” class sections. An example is a class with two lecture sections and multiple discussion sections listed for each lecture. You must choose one lecture and one section that go together in order to register for the course.

Section Numbering: Numbering consists of a letter, representing the campus where the course is offered, and three digits, representing the section. For example, the section Z901 is a Syracuse Abroad Florence course identified by “901.” The section M001 is a Main Campus course identified by “001” and U001 is a University College course identified by “001.” Page 20 of 20
