How the Online TESOL Courses Work

The main benefit of studying TESOL online is that you can take the time you need to grasp all the concepts in the TESOL course. You will pass the course and get your TESOL certificate after passing all the assignments and exams.

We don’t count the time you take to study each module and there aren’t any limits on each module (The only time limit is the course deadline). This format allows you to learn better because you can submit your assignments when you are ready.

120-hour TESOL Course: The minimum time it takes to complete this course is 4 weeks. You will have up to 6 months to pass all the tests and assignments.

250-hour TESOL Course: The minimum time it takes to complete this course is 8 weeks. You will have up to 8 months to pass all the tests and assignments.

An accredited teacher trainer will be assigned to correct your assignments, provide you with feedback, and answer your questions. Communication with the tutor is via e-mail. Feedback is a very important part of the learning progress in our advanced TESOL courses because the work is cumulative, so assignments have to be submitted one at a time.

Graduates can also receive ACTDEC Level 3 (120-hour course) or ACTDEC Level 5 (250-hour course) when they register with ACTDEC and pay the 50GBP fee.

Graduates who complete the Practicum with adult students and meet English language proficiency requirements can register as a member with TESL Canada and receive their Standard 1 or Standard 2 certificate.

All our tutors have been approved by TESL Canada and ACTDEC UK to correct the assignments and provide feedback during the online course. OnTESOL tutors have more than 5 years of experience as teacher trainers and between 10 and 30 years of experience as ESL teachers.

Headstart teachers will be assigned one of our senior tutors, who have experience teaching the Trinity CertTESOL course offered by Coventry House International in Toronto. Some of these tutors have published books related to TESOL methodology, such as the You Can Teach Grammar series, and they have also worked as school directors at renowned language programs in Canada and abroad.

After passing the online course, graduates will receive a TESOL Certificate and transcript issued by Coventry House International and OnTESOL (See sample photo on pages 16-17). The certificate is signed by our Director of Studies and stamped.

All certificates and transcripts are sent by mail from our home office in Toronto to your address in Hong Kong (or internationally if you move after completing the course). Original certificate and mailing fee is included in the initial tuition payment.

The 120-hour Advanced TESOL course is perfect for people who want to take advanced training in an online format. This course offers the same level of training as a CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL course. Accreditation

OnTESOL courses have been evaluated and accredited by two separate, independentaccrediting bodies: The UK-based Accreditation for TESOL Distance Education Courses(ACTDEC) and TESL Canada.

These organizations have scrutinized the courses offered by OnTESOL and given their official recognition of their veracity as teacher training programs. As a result, completion of an OnTESOL course confers upon students an additional recognized status.

In addition to receiving certification from Coventry House International-OnTESOL, graduates may apply for the appropriate certification from ACTDEC and TESL Canada.

Throughout the world, employers prefer to hire teachers whose certificate states theycompleted a supervised in-class Practicum module. A certified Practicum also opens the doorsfor a higher salary.

The benefit of completing this module with OnTESOL is that you can complete the Practicum atthe school you currently teach. This way, you can receive feedback from a Teacher Trainerassigned by OnTESOL on how to apply the TESOL / TEFL methodology according to yourcurrent teaching context. After this module, you will also have a small portfolio of lesson plansto show your creative skills to current and prospective employers!

During this module, you will have the opportunity to design lesson plans that are specific toyour teaching context and to write a reflection paper on the challenges and benefits ofadapting the curriculum using communicative activities and authentic material.

How to Complete This Module:OnTESOL will give you the guidelines after completing the online course. You will be requiredto submit two full lesson plans and one reflective essays. OnTESOL will also give you the formsrequired for your employer to confirm the number of hours completed.The fee for this option is $350, but Headstart teachers pay only $100 if they add the Practicumwhen they enroll in the online TESOL course

Are There Any Differences Between TESOL, TEFL, and TESL Methods?The methodology of TEFL, TESOL, and TESL is the same. Whether you want toteach English abroad or to teach in an English immersion program in NorthAmerica, the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) method prevails all overthe world. In fact, the CLT method can be used to teach any language!

There are different approaches that branch off CLT. The main ones are theCommunicative Approach and Task-based Learning, which are used in about90% of English classes around the world. The 250-hour course covers both theCommunicative Approach and the Task-based Learning lesson planningformats. Our 120-hour course covers the Communicative Approach.

Headstart teachers also receive the 10-hour Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL) specialist for free. The TEYL specialist is a great add-on to the 120-hour course because it covers Task-based Learning in a K-12 teaching context.

How Do I Choose the Best TESOL / TEFL / TESL Course? The best TESOL / TEFL / TESL course will provide you with the most common methodologies and lesson planning formats to develop your capacity to adapt to different teaching materials and groups of learners. Knowing how to supplement the textbook with communicative activities and authentic material (i.e: songs, movies, news stories, podcasts, and other media) is a very important skill that you must have as an ESL teacher.

What is an Advanced TESOL Course?

The minimum requirement for most jobs abroad is a 120-hour TESOL / TEFL / TESL certificate, but not every course is built the same way.

Most online courses offer introductory training. These introductory courses are generally cheap and easy to complete. They were created for young university graduates who want to take a gap-year adventure and who need a quick certificate to get the work visa, but they lack the necessary training to pursue a career in Education.

Most online courses are introductory because they assess students via quick reflection essays. Some courses cover lesson planning, but their participants will often have to complete just one final assignment to receive the certificate. Furthermore, most introductory courses lack grammar and phonology modules.

An advanced TESOL course offers comprehensive training in every area of TESOL theory and methodology: Grammar, phonology, and methodology. In particular, an advanced TESOL course assesses trainees through major lesson planning assignments that integrate grammar and vocabulary lessons with speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills.

An advanced TESOL course is generally accredited by one of the top 3 accrediting bodies in the world: TESL Canada, Trinity CertTESOL, and/or CELTA. How Does OnTESOL Compare with CELTA?CELTA is an entry-level 120-hour TESL / TEFL / TESOL certification course that includes a Practicum module. OnTESOL offers advanced online TESOL courses with an optional Practicum module that is offered separately. Our 120-hour Advanced TESOL Certificate is academically equivalent to CELTA. Our 250-hour TESOL Diploma is more comprehensive than CELTA.

What Does the Course Fee Cover?The fee includes reading material, videos, tutor support, TESOL certificate and transcript sent internationally, and taxes. The only extra cost is the Practicum and accreditation fees payable to TESL Canada (CDN$120) and ACTDEC (50GBP) to process your documentation (Accreditation fees are subject to change).

How Do I Complete the Course?You can access the first module after your course is activated. The course material will guide you through each assignment and you will submit your work to your tutor via e-mail for marking (Those who take the 120-hour course have to submit the grammar and phonology tests via the system). Modules will be opened as you progress through the course.

The Course Activation e-mail will provide you with the name of your online tutor, who will contact you within 24 hours and will introduce himself/herself as well as the course material, expectations, assignments, final tests, the marking system and all information pertaining the course.

If you have any queries and questions on the course material, have trouble with an assignment or quiz or just want some kind of help, you can always contact your tutor by email from Monday to Friday and he/she will quickly respond to help you deal with the problem.

How is the Material Presented?For each module, you will have a main textbook, which you can download from your student account. You can read the material online or print it. You will also have access to video tutorials and recorded ESL classes that you have to watch to complete some assignments, and there are links to valuable external resources, videos, and audio. Your tutor is available to answer your questions and engage in an academic conversation with regards to the topics in the course material.

How Will I Be Assessed? Your work will be assessed throughout the course. There are assignments you will complete and submit to your tutor for marking and feedback. Depending on the course you have enrolled in, assignments include writing reflective essays, writing essays showing understanding of specific methodology topics, demonstrating what techniques you would use to teach a particular topic or skill, writing lesson plans, and final grammar and phonology exams. All of these assignments are to be sent to your tutor by email or through the OnTESOL website. There are also tasks, which need to be submitted to your tutor to receive feedback, but will not be marked. Refer to the transcripts attached for more information about the assignments.

How Will OnTESOL Send the Certificate?You can request a scanned e-copy to be sent via e-mail and a print copy to sent by mail. We mail certificates internationally. The process is as follows: When you finish the course, the OnTESOL office will contact you about your Practicum. If you do not do the Practicum, you can request to receive the TESOL certificate right away. If you do the Practicum, you can request a scanned e-copy and we will mail the updated version to Hong Kong (Or internationally) after the Practicum.

Does the TESOL Certificate Expire?No, the TESOL certificatte issued by Coventry House International-OnTESOL does not expire.

Is there a Deadline to Complete TESL Canada Accreditation Requirements? No, there isn’t a deadline to meet TESL Canada’s requirements such as Practicum or proficiency score and request their certificate.

Will I Receive a Reference Letter?Those who pass the course with an average of 80% may request a reference letter signed by the Director of Studies to accompany the TESOL certificate and transcript.

Does Job Support Expire? You can use our job assistance services for life. The only restrictions are age and certain nationality requirements set by immigration laws.
