lI'!"'--------. JULIE DALE - Maria Von Trapp A native of Sunnyvale, Julie appears in her fifthproduction for WVLO. Her most recent role of Nellie Forbush in last season's "SouthPacific" won her an ERMA Award as Best Actress, but her supporting role of Bonnie in"Anything Goes" was also a memorable one for our regular theater goers. Julie's othercredits include Meg Brockie in "Brigadoon" and Ruth in "Wonderful Town" for WVLO,Sara Brown in "Guys and Dolls" and Dolly Tate in "Annie Get Your Gun" for SCP, andperformances in "South Pacific" and "Fiddler on the Roof" for SJCLO. A graduate fromFremont High School in Sunnyvale, she holds a BA in Art History from New YorkUniversity and is a travel consultant for Travel Expressions in Los Altos. Julie introducedher parents, Les and Elizabeth Dale, to community theater several years ago and it hasbecome a 'family' project ever since. She plans to introduce another member to thetheater ranks when she marries Tom Colgrove in September. Best wishes to both of youand we truly hope we have gained a 'theatrical son' and not lost a terrific 'performingdaughter'!!!

BOB MILLS - Captain Von Trapp Bob returns for his 13th production since 1979, allexclusively with WVLOA. Our regular audiences will remember him from "South Pacific"(twice), "Man of La Mancha", "Showboat", "Dames At Sea", "42nd Street", and mostrecently, "Guys and Dolls". Originally from Portland, Oregon, where he graduated fromdental school, Bob, his wife, Irene, and daughter, Karyn, moved to Sacramento in 1966tospend 2 years at McClellan Air Force Base. They then moved to Santa Clara to open hisprivate dental practice. After 20years of dentistry, Bob retired last January to join Irene inher teddy bear and balloon business which she started 3 years ago; but he & Irene arelooking forward to really retiring in Oregon sometime in the near future. A member ofWVLOA Board of Directors, Bob has no aspirations or ambitions to continue with atheatrical career. He simply enjoys being a part of community theater and enjoying thefellowship and friendships he has made during that time. Please don't really retire toosoon, Bob, you have so much more to contribute to our theatrical productions.

LISA TERRY - Baroness Elsa Schraeder A recent arrival to Northern California fromA.spen, Colorado, where she managed and performed at the Crystal Palace DinnerTheater, Lisa holds a BA in Speech Communications/Music from Oklahoma ChristianCollege in Oklahoma City. Before moving to Aspen, her impressive list of credits in stock, dinner theater and touring companies include the roles of Aldonza in "Man of LaMancha", Sara Brown in "Guys and Dolls", Laurie in "Oklahoma", and Anna in "The Kingand I". Audiences in the Bay Area first saw Lisa in a touring production of "A ChristmasCarol" at the Flint Center. She says, "Like most actors and actresses do at one time oranother, I am currently waiting tables at Brandon's Restaurant in Milpitas." Welcome,Lisa, we are delighted to have such a talented performer share her talents with ourcommunity.

LES DALE - Max Detweiler If our count is accurate this is Les' 11th production with WVLOand he lists his favorite roles as FOR in "Annie", Captain Andy in "Show Boat" and Mr.Lundie in "Brigadoon". He is also partial to his latest performance as Father Mulcahy in"M.A.S.H." for SCPo Could it be that you think the role of a Catholic chaplain istypecasting?? With Sunnyvale as his home town and Fremont High as his Alma Mater,Les feels right at home in this community and once his daughter Julie (Maria) introducedhim to theater, he has been involved either on stage, designing sets, decorating sets anddrops and/or building special props for theatrical productions. His future goal he says isto "keep on keepin' on" and we certainly hope he does. He retired from Pacific Telephone, but drives a limo in his spare time! What a distinguished looking chauffeur!!

IRYNE HACK - Mother Abbess Iryne is certainly no stranger to our stage; this is her 17thproduction with WVLOA which includes her work on stage crew, props, set constructionas well as on-stage appearances. Her long list of credits include roles with the HonoluluCommunity Theater, Music Theater in Illinois and while working in the Chicago area onesummer, Iryne performed in three shows consecutively, but learned them allsimultaneously -- "Kate" in "Kiss Me Kate"; "Countess Louisa" in "Song of Norway" and"Bloody Mary" in "South Pacific". What a challange, but very rewarding, too. Irynecurrently works at Hytek Microsystems, Inc. in Los Gatos and states that she wants to stayinvolved with theater as long as she can in whatever capacity she is needed or wanted. Now that is dedication and we are grateful for all of Iryne's generous gift of her time andtalents.

Page 7: onn ofUStC - wvlo.org

SUSAN FRANKENBERGER - Liesl Susan makes her first appearance on our stage, buthas an impressive background and performing experience. At Lomoc High, she wasMinnie Fay in "Hello Dolly!" and here in the Bay Area, she performed for TheaterWorks asBella in "Rags" and the Artful Dodger in "Oliver". At SCP, she was involved in the JuniorTheater in "The Pied Piper", "Rumplestiltskin" and "Babes in Toyland". Her future plansare to move to LA to continue her dance lessons and to start voice lessons. A consultantfor Arbonne International - Swiss Skincare - Susan says she is grateful to her Mom foralways believing in her. Wewish her luck and much success, but would like to see her stayaround awhile in this Area to share her talents!

BRAD COURTRIGHT - Rolph Brad makes his first appearance with WVLOA, but hasseveral productions to his credit, namely, "Marne" and "Grease" for SCP and "TheBoyfriend" and "Sweeney Todd" for Foothill College. He attended BYU for a year wherehe performed in "Godspell". By day he is a word processor and by night a waiter at ChinaShuttle. He has 3 goals in life; to study theater, move to New York and to have coffee withMadonna. Well, 2 out of 3 isn't bad, Brad. His performance is being dedicated to KarenGrassle.

STEVE VON TILL - Herr Zeller This will be Steve's 3rd Production with WVLOA, his firstwas "Annie" in which he played several characters in the chorus and was awarded theCaptain's Cape and the other was in "Show Boat" when he played Stephen Baker, thehandsomest man in the Middle West! Not only is Steve an attorney with Von Till & Pattonin Fremont, he also acts as the WVLOA Counsel on the Board of Directors. His daughter,Katie plays Brigitta in this production and he points out that in all three shows Katie & LesDale have been involved. Of course, he says, " ...most anyone could say that every showthey've been in, Les Dale was there, too." Steve attended high school in Park River,Illinois, received a BA in Humanities from Michigan State University and his Law Degreefrom the University of Illinois. He claims the distinction of being a classmate of CarrieSnodgrass of "Diary of a Mad Housewife"fame and shows great pride in his Austrian/Irishancestry. Steve plays a great guitar as last year's banquet attendees may recall when heperformed with THE OVERTURES. His personal goals are to watch Katie grow up to be astar or whatever she wants to be and watch his son reform the world and hopefully to beable to support himself someday. We know you're busy, Steve, but we're very pleased thatyou and Katie took time to return to our stage.

KEVIN CORMIER - Director It has been several years since Kevin has directed for us."Man of La Mancha" was his last production here before he moved to So. California toobtain his MA in Direction from Cal State Fullerton. While there, Kevin had the honor ofworking with Jose Quintero, internationally renowned stage director. He also met hiswife Claire while involved in a play. Kevin actually started directing in 1977 with SCP'sproduction of "Guys and Dolls" and continued with the group to direct "Annie Get YourGun", "Gypsy", "Brigadoon" and "Hello Doily!". Kevin has many other directorial creditsas well, but he is versatile in other aspects of theater as well; choreography, acting, designing sets and make-up, vocal and chorus work. Kevin is currently teaching at SI.Lawrence Academy, where his courses include English, Chorus, and Drama. Is he glad tobe back? We think so, but what we know is that we are very happy to have him backdirecting for WVLOA again. Welcome back, Kevin, and hope you and Claire enjoy itenough to stay a long time!

JOHN DOSCHER - Music Director This will be John's 4th musical with WVLOA; he justcompleted "South Pacific" last summer and prior to that directed our orchestras for"Marne" and "Pajama Game". John has been involved with local commuity theater foreight years. In addtion to conducting, he plays trombone with jazz groups and withchamber music workshops. John has also performed for SCP and the G&S Society. He isan independent CPA, balancing his time between developing forecast managementsoftware and family activities. An excellent musician, we are always delighted to haveJohn on our staff.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE"THE SOUND OF MUSIC" is the last, great Rodgers & Hammerstein musical.Shortly after its opening on Broadway, Oscar Hammerstein died.

"THE SOUND OF MUSIC" embodies the true romantic sentiments of a team thatspent years imbuing musicals not only with great charm, but with great moralphilosophy as well. Their shows examined politics, racial prejudice, spouseabuse, and social responsibility to name a few topics among many others. Whilenodding at the Nazi annexation of Austria, "The Sound of Music" focuses on whatmight be the Rodgers' and Hammerstein's philosophy in a nutshell: if we are trueto ourselves then we will find what is right. Their other shows have elements ofintegrity in people, but only as a tangent to the greater problem being presentedin the play. The characters in "The Sound of Music" confront primarilythemselves searching for personal choices which will lead them to dependablehappiness coming from within rather than without. Maria cannot hide from herlove of the Captain in the convent. The Captain cannot hide behind militaryseverity. Ultimately, these two find the strenth to confront their personal fearsand accept the love that is between them.

This play is about people, and love, and not running from one's true self. Rodgersand Hammerstein told this same message in many of their other shows, but neverquite so succinctly. It is fitting that Mr. Hammerstein, who lived his own life withintegrity and caring for others was allowed to summarize his life's ideals withsuch a beautiful, moving story as "The Sound of Music". From us all- Thank you.
