Some spellbinding flights of fancy are about to launch. And, if you’re seeking the perfect antidote to those cold days and endless winter’s nights - we suggest you hop on board.

The second leg of Bilbo Baggins’ intrepid mission into the heart of Middle-Earth is perhaps the most eagerly awaited journey of all. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug sees Bilbo and his group of pint-sized warriors face their most formidable foes yet as they continue their epic quest.

Courage and adventure also lies at the heart of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, a contemporary retelling of the classic 1939 short story. Taking both directing and starring credits, Ben Stiller steps into the shoes of daydreamer Mitty, who dares to break out of his humdrum life for a thrilling taste of adventure.

Family-friendly gems come in the form of the prehistoric epic Walking with Dinosaurs and Disney’s bitingly brilliant Frozen, which guarantees to warm those cockles.

Get set for a rib-tickling, spellbinding and oh-so satisfying ride. Until next time!

WHAT’S ON

Walking With Dinosaurs

While parents will likely follow the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and Ron Burgundy this December, children will be more excited by the extraordinary opportunity to walk with dinosaurs. For their adaptation of their own six part miniseries, BBC Earth uses state of the art 3D technology to create a unique cinema experience that immerses audiences in an epic and thriving prehistoric world.

Directors Barry Cook and Neil Nightingale draw on the latest paleontological discoveries to provide the most accurate representation of what life was like when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. However, this is much more than your standard nature documentary. Fact is combined with fiction to provide a pleasant children’s story that follows a young Pachyrhinosaurus who must fight against the odds, a host of fearsome predators and nature’s most dangerous elements to survive after being separated from his family.

Having been granted the official seal of approval from power director turned 3D pioneer James Cameron, Walking With Dinosaurs 3D is sure to offer a thoroughly enjoyable visual feast that will keep the entire family captivated.

In the off-beat action comedy The Family, a mafia boss and his family are relocated to a sleepy town in France under the witness protection program after snitching on the mob. Despite the best efforts of Agent Stansfield (Tommy Lee Jones) to keep them in line, Fred Manzoni (Robert DeNiro), his wife Maggie (Michelle Pfeiffer) and their children Belle and Warren can’t help but revert to old habits and blow their cover by handling their problems the ‘family’ way, enabling their former mafia cronies to track them down.

Chaos ensues as old scores are settled in the unlikeliest of settings in this darkly funny film by Luc Besson (Taken, Transporter).

Filmed entirely at Shepperton Studios London, Sandra Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone - tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness.

The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.

WHAT’S ON

Frozen

Fresh off success with Tangled and Wreck it Ralph, the Walt Disney Animation Studio has reasserted its position as a leader in both traditional and computer animation.

Frozen is based loosely on the Hans Christian Anderson short story, ‘Snow Queen’. The story sees fearless optimist Anna (voiced by Kristin Bell) set off on an epic journey, teaming up with rugged mountain man Kristoff (voice of Jonathan Groff). Their mission, to find her sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel), whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom in eternal winter. Battling the elements (and occasionally, each other), the pair must learn to work together to save the Arendelle kingdom.

With a charming (and extremely funny) ‘micro story’ as the movie’s trailer, we have already been introduced to two of the supporting characters; Olaf the snowman and Kristoff’s reindeer, Sven. With fan reaction already overwhelmingly positive, it is clear that the mismatched pair have the potential to become a classic Disney double act in the vein of Timone and Pumba.

Lee Daniels’ The Butler tells the story of post-war America, as seen through the eyes of an African-American White House butler who served eight American presidents over three decades.

Forest Whitaker stars as the titular butler Cecil Gaines, who over his career witnesses and experiences several notable historical events. From the civil rights movement to the Vietnam conflict, Lee Daniels’ The Butler chronicles the dramatic changes that swept the nation during his tenure and how these radical societal shifts affected his life and family.

The string of US leaders that move in and out of Cecil’s life are played by an ensemble cast who are possibly more familiar to younger cinemagoers than the presidents they portray. Among them are John Cusack as Richard Nixon, Alan Rickman as Ronald Reagan, Robin Williams as Dwight Eisenhower and James Marsden as John F. Kennedy.

Saving Mr. BankS

When Walt Disney’s daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers’ Mary Poppins, he made them a promise one that he didn’t realise would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stop selling and money grows short, Travers reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney’s plans for the adaptation.

For those two short weeks in 1961, Walt Disney pulls out all the stops. Armed with imaginative storyboards and chirpy songs from the talented Sherman brothers, Walt launches an all-out onslaught on P.L. Travers, but the prickly author doesn’t budge. He soon begins to watch helplessly as Travers becomes increasingly immovable and the rights begin to move further away from his grasp. It is only when he reaches into his own childhood that Walt discovers the truth about the ghosts that haunt her, and together they set Mary Poppins free to ultimately make one of the most endearing films in cinematic history.

DAWN OF THE DINOSAURSFrom the jaws of the gorgosaurus to the thunderous advance of the pachyrhinosaurus, prepare to see, hear and feel what it was like when dinosaurs roamed the Earth in prehistoric adventure Walking with Dinosaurs WorDs Lee Curtis

reLease date 20 deCember / director Neil Nightingale / starring Charlie Rowe,

Angourie Rice / Genre Action, Family

Ever since Jurassic Park, more glamorous dinosaurs such as the velociraptor, triceratops and the legendary T-Rex have dominated children’s imaginations

and cinema screens. BBC Earth, however, bucks the trend by unearthing some relatively unknown, but equally interesting, dinosaurs for the big screen adaptation of their documentary miniseries, Walking with Dinosaurs.

Directors Neil Nightingale, creative director of BBC Earth, and Barry Cook, director of Mulan and Arthur Christmas, combine their expertise in nature documentaries and children’s animation respectively to present a 3D adventure like no other.

Set in the Late Cretaceous period, about four million years before T-Rex came into existence,

Walking With Dinosaurs follows a trio of pachyrhinosaurus - Patchi, Scowler and Juniper - on their coming of age journey from infancy to adulthood. Fact and fiction are entwined in a narrative that seeks to provide a realistic depiction of life on prehistoric Earth in the form of an entertaining, educational and family-friendly adventure.

The original six-part nature documentaries are renowned for their visual effects and showcase of detailed computer-generated dinosaurs in their natural live action settings. The film matches this remarkable authenticity with an Alaskan backdrop where these dinosaurs lived 70 million years ago - and goes one step further by presenting their prehistoric world in groundbreaking 3D.

The filmmakers joined forces with the Cameron Pace Group, a pioneering 3D technologies company founded by James Cameron and Vince Pace, to use revolutionary 3D techniques. Walking with Dinosaurs joins the heady likes of Avatar, Hugo and Life of Pi as films to be granted CPG’s official seal of approval - so it’s safe to say we can look forward to jaw-dropping visuals.

Following in the mighty footsteps of Jurassic Park, Walking With Dinosaurs looks set to be a truly innovative cinematic experience, which transports the entire family back in time to witness these fascinating creatures in their prehistoric world.

Tolkien’s work has inspired theatrical productions, computer games and the creative output of everyone from Led Zeppelin to Leonard Nimoy. Here is a sampling of Martin Freeman’s predecessors in the role of Bilbo Baggins:

BBC Radio 4 drama The Hobbit starred Paul Daneman as Bilbo and ran from September to November 1968.

The American animated TV production debuting in 1977 and produced by Rankin/Bass starred Orson Bean as Bilbo.

A fan favourite remains the Ralph Bakshi-directed animation of The Lord of the Rings, with Norman Bird voicing Bilbo, in 1978.

Rankin and Bass teamed up again in 1980 for the animated The Return of the King, once again starring Orson Bean as Bilbo, but this time as Frodo too.

Ian Holm first portrayed Bilbo in Jackson’s LOTR trilogy in 2001, but in 1981, he starred as Frodo Baggins in the BBC’s 26-installment dramatisation.

INTO THE DRAGON’S LAIR

Call it The Empire Strikes Back syndrome.

Many passionately argue that the middle Star Wars film (of the original three) is the masterpiece for a variety

of reasons, not least of which include Darth Vader’s big reveal, and an overall darker tone. Subsequently, middle or second films must often work harder to capture viewers’ hearts in light of Empire’s favoured reception, as they can too easily become overshadowed by anticipation of the climax (and pay-off) in the final or future films.

For Peter Jackson, this isn’t exactly uncharted territory. Eleven years ago, his middle film in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Two Towers, had its source material significantly altered for the purpose of beefing up tension and balancing crowd-pleasing scenes. Major plot points were added which didn’t take place in the book, such as Aragorn’s cliff fall in the Warg Rider battle resulting in his separation from Theoden’s men. Jackson is no stranger to keeping fans on the edge of their seat, but with as much faithfulness and respect to the spirit of Tolkien’s work as possible.

For die-hard fanatics of the books, speculation over changes might be running rampant as the release of this second film in

The Hobbit trilogy draws near. Excitement at beloved characters and jaw-dropping settings brought to life once more, however, is no less for it. Jackson’s cinematic extravaganza has taken on a life of its own, managing what was once deemed impossible: enchanting new fans while remaining mindful of the millions who have long known the books inside and out.

Much of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey focused on character and setting introduction; the famous dinner party Bilbo very much didn’t plan, his invitation to adventure, and the all-important riddles in the dark which brought Bilbo and the One Ring together, thrilling audiences with the details of how Gollum’s “precious” made its way into one unsuspecting hobbit’s pocket, after the abridged version in The Fellowship of the Ring.

When last we saw Bilbo and company, the eagles had delivered them safely away from the orcs, with the Lonely Mountain - their goal - in sight in the distance. Now with the Misty Mountains behind them, they must focus their attention on gaining entrance to the dwarves’ former home, and outwitting its new inhabitant Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch), the dragon who has claimed all treasure inside as his own while laying waste to the surrounding land.

Before Bilbo and the dwarves reach Smaug’s lair to reclaim the Lonely Mountain, however, they’ve still got a lot of ground to cover, not least of which includes navigating the dangers of Mirkwood, posed by both spiders and wood elves.

New faces this time around include Beorn the shape-shifter (Mikael Persbrandt), Legolas’s

father Thranduil (Lee Pace), the human mayor of Lake-town (Stephen Fry), dwarven warrior Dain Ironfoot (Billy Connolly), Bard the Bowman (Luke Evans), and new elf Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly).

While some of these characters are more fleshed out on-screen than their literary counterparts, Lilly’s is the only one created solely for the film. As head of the Mirkwood Elven Guard, Tauriel’s controversial inception is said to have been based on the desire to give audiences more insight into the Woodland Elves, as well as add another female to a male-dominated cast. The response to such an addition remains to be seen, but given the popularity of fellow female elves Arwen and Galadriel as film characters, it’s likely Tauriel will easily find her own rabid fan base.

The previous film revealed what Elrond, Galadriel and Saruman were up to before LOTR, and likewise this entry gives us more time with Fellowship member Legolas. While not in the book, it’s doubtful Legolas’s presence will be as controversial as Tauriel’s.

At first, the decision to split The Hobbit into three films was also met with criticism, but given the action and level of loving detail with which Jackson’s adaptations have become synonymous, at this point it hardly seems possible to imagine a single film doing the overall story justice. Being hired as the company thief, now Bilbo begins to fall under the spell of the One Ring’s handy invisibility - and that’s when the stage setting for the coming battle for Middle-Earth really begins.

The return to Middle-Earth is nigh. In the second instalment of Peter Jackson’s epic trilogy, Bilbo Baggins and co. face giant spiders, orcs and a less-than-welcoming dragon. Prepare for a nerve-shredding mission in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaugwords Cheyenne Campbell

LIFE WITHOUT BORDERS

From hopeless daydreams to unimaginable adventures, Ben Stiller steps into the shoes of Walter Mitty in this modern-day adaptation of a classic short story. Pack some courage and head into the unknown in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty WordS Brody rossiter

release date 26 decemBer / director Ben Stiller / starring Kristen Wiig, Ben Stiller,

Adam Scott / Genre Adventure, Comedy, Drama

Long before the crew hurriedly finished their coffee breaks, the percussive thwack of the clapperboard rung out upon set, and scripted words leapt from

the mouths of the assembled actors - The Secret Life of Walter Mitty had already undergone a strange and arduous journey of self-discovery to situate itself upon cinema screens.

Spanning several decades, directors and leading men, the second adaptation of James Thurber’s celebrated 1939 short story was originally pencilled in for a 1994 remake. By the turn of the 21st century, following multi-million dollar bidding wars and years of contractual wrangling, the extraordinary tale of a daydreaming photo editor had slipped into a downward spiral of developmental hell - with little sign of hope upon the Hollywood horizon. Further years passed, as did a litany of directors and A-list names, yet a retelling of Mitty’s adventures continued to elude

audiences - that is, until a rescue mission was led by a most unexpected individual: comedy flick head honcho Ben Stiller, who directs and stars in the eponymous role.

A latter-day filmography, which has proven Stiller possesses the acting chops to play it straight and charming as opposed to slapstick and goofy, has ensured the tale finally rests in the right hands to reveal the story’s tender heart. After Walter loses a photograph taken by illustrious explorer Sean O’Connell to grace the cover of the final issue of LIFE magazine, he escapes his drab office cubicle and embarks upon an epic globe-spanning journey to find Sean, the photograph - and himself.

Icelandic helicopter rides across shark-infested oceans, heroic Himalayan ascents to mighty mountaintops, frostbitten treks across treacherous ice caps and a supporting cast including Kristen Wiig, Patton Oswalt and Sean Penn all promise to breathe new life into a contemporary fable that may have been forever lost. The unknown rests out there, in a world full of wonder; join Walter upon his visually stunning and emotionally inspired journey and race to it.

Fresh from his adventure in space George Clooney is back in the Directors seat in the run up to awards season!

Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is a dramatic thriller focusing on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners.

It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys - seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 - possibly hope to succeed?

But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind’s greatest achievements.

A whole host of Hollywood A-Listers have stepped up to star alongside Mr Clooney for this one including Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, and Cate Blanchett.
