Project Background

deugro (Deutschland) Projekt GmbH successfully went through the process to register as a supplier for an international drilling contractor and strengthen our business relationship for years to come. In 2015, North Western Germany, the drilling contractor was hired to deliver a new onshore rig to Muara, Brunei. deugro Hamburg entered into a competitive tender against other global project forwarders to bid on performing the freight forwarding scope on behalf of the drilling contractor.

After progressing through the first round of the tender process, the drilling contractor invited

deugro and other selected freight forwarders to a rig inspection in Germany. deugro at-tended with its preferred packing company, as seaworthy packing was also part of the project scope, and emphasized these services in a unique collaboration with the Transport Engineering Division, home to deugro‘s in-house experts in handling heavy and oversized cargo.

After tight negotiations involving deugro’s Chartering Department, deugro Group’s Transport Insurance company, and senior management, deugro secured the contract.

PROJECT EXECUTION AND DEUGRO‘S SCOPE OF WORKThe project scope covered all services from EXW North Western, Germany to CFR Muara, Brunei. Before the seaworthy packing could start, the brand-new rig had to pass a technical test run. During this process, any malfunctions were corrected directly at site.

The additional time required to make the corrections necessary was hard to predict, but would have a major impact on the overall time- frame. As a result, deugro needed to provide and

manage a highly flexible schedule, in terms of being amenable to any delays as a result of any faults that were found

or corrections that had to be made during the test run.

Due to a tight project schedule, the drilling contractor was looking for the earliest sailing

option. In order to save time, deugro coordinated the first packing operation while the rig-down process was already happening, and was supported by a crane operator at site. Once the rig was completely dismantled, deugro took over with the local crane services available to lift items during packing and complete truck- loading operations. By operating collaboratively, deugro was able to reduce the costs for the customer and mitigate the impact on their schedule.

Rig items were partially bundled, boxed-up, or spot-crated depending on the nature of the cargo units. Smaller items, like light systems, handrails, and pipe sections, were stowed into the shipper’s own containers (SOC) provided by deugro. As a result, stowing preparations were finalized well before the vessel arrived and deugro managed to meet the customer’s requirement of stowing all items below deck.

Transport Engineering Division

As a highly specialized freight for- warder, deugro adds value for its clients with an in-house, independent Transport Engineering Division – our combination of engineering and freight forwarding experience.

Our Transport Engineering Division is made up of industry experts with proven experience, drawn from the fields of engineering and freight for-warding. Our engineers find the most cost-effective and suitable transport solutions executed to your full satis- faction with best-in-class equipment.

deugro’s in-house Transport Engineer- ing Division provides:Drawings (AutoCAD®), route surveys, transport solutions, lifting studies, lash- ing arrangements, method statements, transport consulting, and 3D transport simulations.

Operational services include: Loading/unloading of vessels, cargo preloading inspections, transport monitoring, etc.

The initial truck-loading schedule was updated on a daily basis and reported to the client, in light of the limited space available at site for the next rig items that needed to be dismantled, as well as the packing material needed. This requirement demanded a flexible way of handling and planning the entire packing and loading process. To accommodate this operation, deugro’s Transport Engineer- ing Division and an independent sworn marine surveyor instructed by deugro were positioned to manage this work. In addition, deugro sent one of our highly skilled and experienced project coordinators to site to optimize daily communication with the drilling contractor and to support deugro’s Transport Engineering Division when it came to vehicle management, as well as handling associated documentation.

contractor‘s site and headed towards the port in Bremen, Germany. Shortly before the vessel arrived in Bremen, the customer changed the part-charter terms to last in/first out.

The loading operation was attended by deugro’s project team, as well as the drilling contractor.

Although the overall volume was larger than initially an- nounced and less cargo was stackable, deugro managed to

stow the entire rig below deck as required. Throughout the operation, deugro benefited from the fact that the independent sworn marine sur-veyor had been engaged from the early packing and loading stages and as a result, knew the cargo very well, which meant that the marine surveyor was able to optimize space-saving.

In addition to completing the required complex stowing concept, deugro managed all project operations throughout this job.
