HIMSS Europe would like to welcome you to our joint event: the HIMSS Europe CIO Summit and European

Telemedicine Conference which for the first time will be held together. This fall, Rome is the city hosting these

two pan European events, as Italy is the country holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union

during the second semester of 2014.

This year, the CIO Summit and ETC have been brought together to offer you the chance to further develop

your knowledge and network. The CIO Summit addresses the specific challenges CIO’s from across Europe

are facing, based on the findings from our HIMSS Analytics data. To address those challenges, we have identified

a number of best practices to be presented, which we hope can provide some inspiration.

The ETC focuses on best practices in telemedicine and telecare and how these technologies enable Continuity

of Care. The Honourable Italian Minister of Health, Beatrice Lorenzin, will spearhead the Ministry of Health’sown conference track ‘Conference on eHealth’ which will present relevant content and shed light on the

normative, governmental perspective.

The programme includes a variety of exciting topics, ranging from Patient Involvement in EMR and Integrated

Care to the debated theme Safety on the Use of IT —

Can there be “Side Effects” to Using “the Wrong IT”?

These two major events bring together prominent healthcare delivery organisations, e-health experts,

governmental leaders, clinicians, researchers and university faculties.

Whether you are attending the CIO Summit, the ETC or both, on behalf of HIMSS Europe, I would like to thank

you for joining us this year in the beautiful city of Rome and hope you enjoy the events. See you next year in

Denmark!

Continuity of Care through Healthcare IT

(sponsored in part by )

In order for nurses, doctors and care providers toconsistently provide the highest quality of care in everyhealthcare interaction, reliable healthcare IT systems arerequired. These require to not only be interoperable, butsynchronised between every provider and system. Therewill also be an opportunity within this session to hearabout the continuity-of-care maturity model currentlybeing developed by HIMSS.

(sponsored in part by )

There is a need across the whole of Europe for highlyskilled professionals who are able to develop EMRs thatare not only effective within the healthcare organisationwhere they are being used, but can also interfaceseamlessly with other required systems. This session isdesigned to provide a forum for sharing best practice andhelping participants in their bid to develop EMR solutionsthat work for them.

HIT and Mobility: How Technology is Changingthe Way we Work

(sponsored in part by )

New technologies are doing much to benefit those patientswho, for mobility reasons, cannot always get to theirspecialist hospital as frequently as they would like. Forexample, they are enabling their condition to be remotelymonitored, enhancing quality of life and bringing peaceof mind (and often, at the same time, reducing costs forthe healthcare organisation). This session will also explorehow HIT is enabling clinicians and care staff to becomemore mobile in their own work and freeing them up tooffer quality care outside the hospital environment.

The Role of the CMIO/ CNIO:A Key to Successful Outcomes in HIT?

(sponsored in part by )

Without engagement from the clinical side, no healthcareIT system can be effective and this is one reason why therole of chief medication information officer (CMIO) andchief nursing information officer (CNIO) are becoming soprevalent (and important) in today s healthcareestablishments. Effectively, these roles are helping providea bridge between the medical and IT departments, theoretically helping make each more effective.

Patient Involvement in EMR:A Good Thing or a Bad Thing?

(sponsored in part by )

Patients and healthcare providers who share access toelectronic health information/EMRs can theoreticallycollaborate better in informed decision making, savingclinician time and empowering and motivating the patientto take responsibility for their own health. But are there alsodownsides to giving the patient shared access? This sessionwill provide a forum to discuss this controversial area.

This session will argue the importance of using the correct information technologies in order to get the best resultsand will ask the question, ‘Can the incorrect IT actually have ‘side effects’ on care?’ Can orders-related clinical decision-making, for instance, have a detrimental impact on nursing practice? And when using barcodes to identify patients, for example, is there a danger that clinicians will forget patients real names?

Help at Critical Moments: Clinical Decision Support Systems

(sponsored in part by )

An effective clinical decision support system has the power to radically change a clinician s working life, providinginformation and knowledge to aid his or her own observations in real-time, making decisions easier. But when it isnot tailored toward the institution and practitioners who are using it, it can actually make life more – not less –complicated. In this session we hear some best practice examples and identify some of the criteria that make a clinicaldecision-support system effective.

The earliest documentation of civilization shows that mankind has perpetually reinvented himself in the threat ofbecoming extinct. With the exception of a few short years commonly known as the “Dark Ages”, change has beenthe only constant factor in our lives. Globally, the industry of Healthcare is at a crossroads regardless of who ownsit (private or public) and who pays for it (private or public). There are countless examples of societies, cities, andindustries that have reinvented themselves and came out on top. Mr. Dan Drawbaugh will discuss these examplesand lessons from the past that are about to collide within the healthcare industry. He will discuss how we can learnfrom them and what we can do to transform our industry so that we do not become obsolete.
