  • 2020 Vision

Happy New Year and welcome back

to The Bushnell! I hope your holidays

were equal parts celebratory and peaceful

and that 2020 has begun with all the promise and hopeful anticipation a new year offers.

We’re going to spend 2020 looking both forward and backward. It was this week 90 years ago that The Horace Bushnell Memorial Hall opened its doors as “a gift to the people of Connecticut . . . A center for the benefit of arts, science, and community activities.” We will be celebrating this milestone anniversary all year, reminding you of the rich history of our institution and its visionary founder, Dotha Hillyer Bushnell.

But this year will not be one where we rest on our historic laurels. The Bushnell has always been a forward-thinking center of our community, and we are on the cusp of many exciting enhancements to our building and our programming. One of the most obvious you’ll see is new digital

signage inside and outside our halls. These state-of-the-art panels will allow us to offer up-to-the-minute information on current and upcoming productions, recognize our supporters, and tell the myriad stories of the many ways The Bushnell impacts our community. Inside our theatres we’ll be offering an expanded variety of cultural offerings, including a number of emerging artists who are new to Hartford with specific appeal to a range of audiences.

We’re so pleased you’ve joined us this week for Anastasia. The show premiered in 2016 across the park at Hartford Stage, and we’re thrilled to bring the tour home to Hartford after its successful Broadway run. It’s another example of the way Hartford has been a creative leader in the arts, and we’re proud to continue the tradition as The Bushnell plans for its second century as cultural and community touchstone in central Connecticut.

    Sincerely,

    David R. Fay
