1955 was the year. President Eisenhower was in office.A Postage Stamp cost 3 cents. The Brooklyn Dodgers defeatedthe New York Yankees in the World Series. The most popular TV showswere “The $64,000 Question” and “I Love Lucy.”

And the American Nurses Foundation was incorporated.

2005, the American Nurses Foundation celebrated the GoldenAnniversary. It was the year that marked a significant milestone for thefoundation. It was a year to celebrate our ANF Scholars and make plansfor the next 50 years!

In this annual report we reflect on the work of ANF’s many volun-teers, the Board of Trustees and the staff of the foundation during itsgolden anniversary year. We reflect on the commitment of ANF’s manydonors. And as such reflects the work of the foundation today.

The 50th anniversary year was a year of “friend-building” as wellas “fund-raising.” Dinners celebrating ANF Scholars were held in con-junction with the four Spring regional research society conferences(Southern Nursing Research Society in Atlanta, Midwest NursingResearch Society in Cincinnati, the Western Institute of Nursing in SanFrancisco and the Eastern Nursing Research Society in New York City). The festivities continued at dinners held during fall events at theCouncil for the Advancement of Nursing Science (CANS) in Washington,DC and the American Academy of Nurses (AAN) in Scottsdale, AZ.Events during the ANA House of Delegates included a 50’s Sock Hop tocommemorate the 50th Anniversary. All these events are detailed inthe following pages.

We were deeply affected by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. In response, ANF established the Katrina Fund “for nurses to take careof their own” in the states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. ANFimmediately rose to meet its mission of supporting nurses and theirgeneral welfare. Over $50,000 was raised by the end of 2005 (althoughover $250,000 has been raised to-date) with 100% of the funds beingforwarded directly to nurses in the affected states.

Throughout the 50th anniversary year ANF focused on providingnational leadership in healthcare philanthropy, developing nurse scien-tists and their research, growing its financial resources and infusingcultural and ethnic diversity into its work in support of nursing. In look-ing back to its origins, that’s what the nurses envisioned the founda-tion doing. In looking forward to the next 50 years, that’s what the vol-unteers and staff want to continue to do. We hope you will continue tosupport the American Nurses Foundation in continuing to grow in pro-grams and monetary resources to that end.

Funded by W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the emphasis for Project LEAD for the year 2005 has been onsome specific objectives that the twenty-four participants (Fellows) would have the opportunity to achieve.Fellows have been provided the opportunity to explore real life situations where specific leadership skillsmade the difference in building strong cooperation and supportive relationships. They were also providedthe opportunity to identify aspects of leadership that are effective in managing highly diverse groups, empowering others, demonstrating respect for diversity, demonstrating confidence, and recognizing theimportance of globalization of health care. One-on-one mentoring from executive leaders has beenaccorded to each of the Fellows so that each could gain knowledge and experience in raising fund negotiations, problem solving/conflict resolution, innovative change and effective communicating.

Each Fellow had an opportunity to share their projects with the group. The end of the program presentations covered three components. Component I was a brief summary of the project. ComponentII was from the Fellows’ readings and participation in LEAD. This component was considered a specificfocus which allowed the Fellow to emphasize one or more of the concepts in the LEAD MODEL that wasor were clearly evident in what the Fellow specifically designed for their institution. Component IIIinstructed the Fellow that in concluding their presentation the Fellow was to provide a detailed description of the impact that Project LEAD had on their career development and leadership skills.

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation celebrated its 75th Anniversary this year. Project LEAD produced abook for the celebration entitled Soul of Leadership. The book has been an overwhelming success. There have been 12,500 requests for the book. All accredited schools of nursing, the Board of theKellogg Foundation, and all major nursing organizations have received multiple copies of the book.

The ANF/Centers for Disease Preventionand Control (CDC) Food-Safe Schools projectworked diligently to meet the goals ofthis two year project. The goals are toenhance the role of school nurseswithin a coordinated school healthprogram to prevent foodborne illnesses.Training workshops focus on heighten-ing school nurses’ sense of ‘self effica-cy’ and motivation to reduce and man-age school-based foodborne illnessoutbreaks.

Train-the-Trainer workshops titled“School Nurses Responding to theChallenges of Foodborne Illnesses: Prevention,Detection and Management of Foodborne Illnessin Schools” were conducted during 2005: Aprilin Atlanta, GA and December in Scottsdale, AZ.Twenty-five school nurse leaders attended theworkshops and enthusiastically developed indi-vidual plans to replicate the workshop in theirarea. Eight replications for over 230 schoolnurses were completed and many more arescheduled for 2006. ANF staff are available toprovide technical assistance and materials toeach trainer.

In June the ANF/Food-Safe Schools Projectpublished a resource document for schoolnurses entitled: Food-Safe Schools: Handbookfor School Nurses - Prevention, Detection & Management of Foodborne Illnesses, Elaine Brainerd, Editor. The handbook can be downloaded from the ANF website:www.anfonline.org. A Food-Safe Schoolsbrochure that defines the role of school nursesin responding to the challenges is available toschool and health personnel.

Exhibit booths at 2 major conventions: the National Association of School Nurses inWashington, DC and the American SchoolHealth Association in Burbank, CA providedopportunity for the ANF/FSS project to disseminate materials and promote schoolnurse involvement in reducing and managingpotential foodborne illness outbreaks.

The ANF/Food-Safe Schools Project as acharter member of the National Coalition forFood-Safe Schools (NCFSS) was instrumentalin the launching of a new comprehensiveresource for schools: Food-Safe Schools ActionGuide Toolkit in June 2005. NCFSS has over 50

organizations and companies that promoteprevention of foodborne illnesses in schools.

The American NursesFoundation/American NursesAssociation are partners inthe Robert Wood Johnson-funded Tobacco Free NursesInitiative, the first nationaleffort to help nurses, nursingstudents, and their patientsquit smoking. Visits towww.tobaccofreenurses.org

are steadilyincreasing, withover 25,000 pageviews in the monthof February 2005and it has becomeone of Google’s toppicks for nurses andtobacco. The homepage of NursingWorld.org links tothe Nurses QuitNetsite, which offers anarray of interactiveand personalized

services for nurses and nursing students whowant to quit smoking, including private, confidential, one-on-one web-based counseling. In sum, Tobacco Free Nurses is a one-stop shopfor nurses who want to help their patients, colleagues, friends or family stop using tobacco;who are ready to quit, or want to join the campaign for a tobacco free society.

On May 3rd, 2005 through collaborationwith the Agency for Health Care Policy Research,Tobacco Free Nurses launched a pocket guide tohelp nurses help patients with smoking cessation. This guide is based on the scientific-based principles of the Public Health Service’s ClinicalPractice Guideline. This pocket guide, HelpingSmokers Quit: A Guide for Nurses was reprintedby the American Nurses Foundation and will bedistributed at national and state conventions ofnurses and other health care professionals. Visit http://www.nursingworld.org/anf/tobacco/for more information.

If the 2.4 million working nurses in the U.S.each helped one person per year quit smoking, nurses would triple the U.S. quit rate.

Tobacco Free Nurses Initiative

Nurse Competence in Aging (NCA) is a 5-yearinitiative funded by The Atlantic Philanthropies(USA) Inc., awarded to the American NursesAssociation (ANA) through the American NursesFoundation (ANF), and represents a strategicalliance between ANA, the American NursesCredentialing Center (ANCC) and the John A.Hartford Foundation Institute for GeriatricNursing, New York University College of Nursing.

In 2005, twenty additional national specialtynursing organizations, for a total of 47 with the potential to impact over 400,000 nurses, were awarded ANA-SNAPG (American NursesAssociation-Specialty Nursing AssociationPartners in Geriatrics) grants. A final Call forProposals was issued for the grant awards inorder to allow sufficient time for completion ofall programming prior to the conclusion of theNCA initiative in 2007.

While NCA continues to promote certificationin gerontology, given the barriers and challengespresented over the past three years, and basedon discussions with The Atlantic Philanthropies, the NCA partners proposed a set of revised goals

and strategies to achieve its overall goal ofpromoting geriatric competence and certificationamong specialty nurses. the partners have cometo see achieving goals for certification as a journey that started with the NCA project. Theyhave also identified that development of a climate and infra-structure within professionalassociations and hospitals is essential if the NCA goals for certification are to be positioned tocontinue and grow after project funding ceases. As a result, NCA tactics over the next two yearswill create a process that will sustain movementtowards high numbers of specialty nursescertified in geriatrics during the course of theNCA project and into the future.

The NCA Website, www.GeroNurseOnline.org,was selected as a winner in the Spring/Summer2005 World Wide Web Health Awards. Thisprogram recognizes the best health informationWeb sites for consumers and professionals.GeroNurseOnline.org received a Silver Award forHealth Promotion/Disease & Injury PreventionInformation. The website averages 25,000 visitsper month.
