Annual General Meeting

Convention Gala Dinner

Welcome to the SCA (NSW) Annual Convention where we aim to move Onwards and Upwards – which is the theme of this year’s event.

We have a program that has been carefully crafted to appeal to you. Whether you work in strata or live in strata you will find something that is informative and educational. Our quality speakers are leaders in their fields so you know you are hearing from the best and being provided with the latest information.

I am particularly excited by our special guest speakers. On day one we will be welcoming the Minister for Fair Trading, the Honourable Matthew Mason-Cox who assumed the fair trading portfolio earlier this year. Then we will hear from Nigel

Collin who will be sharing his business insights and then our keynote speaker, Olympic golden girl Alissa Camplin, will talk about what it takes to become the best in the world. I am sure she will be inspiring.

Sessions throughout the first day are designed to further your education regardless of whether you’re a strata manager or in strata services. These sessions are a great way of preparing for next year. Speaking of which don’t forget we have the annual general meeting and then its time to have some fun at the gala dinner.

Day two we welcome strata owners and commence the session with Flat Chat live. This is always an interesting and energetic session and expertly hosted by Jimmy Thomson. Strata managers and strata services also have joint sessions during the day and these will be just as motivating as day one.

Thank you to all our sponsors who make this possible especially our platiunum sponsors CHU, Macquarie Bank and Bannermans Lawyers. Thank you also to the SCA (NSW) staff who make this possible.

Stuart Denney As a leader and a mentor, Stuart Denney is Strata Plus’ only Associate Director. His integrity, knowledge and skills have earned him the respect of clients, the Strata Plus team, and all with whom he deals with. Stuart’s outstanding abilities and seven years’ experience in strata have provided him with exposure into all areas of strata, from providing planning advice to developers, to the ongoing management of community and strata title and complex tiered structures with BMCs.

Diane Woods Diane bought her first ever property in 2004 and attended the first Owner’s meeting not long after. She volunteered to be a member on the Executive at that first meeting – obviously not a lot of owners in attendance. Her reasoning was – “what is happening with my major investment and who is looking after it?”

Diane has been on the Executive for 8 years and Chair of the Owner’s Corporation for 7 of those years. There are 2 people she cannot do without – her Strata Manager and her Building Manager.

Diane’s working life was as an events co-ordinator/personal assistant/executive assistant. She has recently retired, is divorced and her only child has been residing in London for the past 12 years.

John PicklesJohn became executive committee Chair in 1980. The plan is well managed - there have been only four EGMs in 33 years. John has appeared on an episode of Gardening Australia showcasing the extraordinary garden he has developed around the property. John formed the first strata law company in 2004. He has recently retired as Chair.

John HutchinsonJohn Hutchinson has been Chair or Treasurer of his strata scheme for most of the past 8 years. Like most Executive Committee members he has “learnt on the job”.

His tenure as a director of Owners Corporation Network of Australia Limited “OCN”, the peak not for profit organisation representing strata owners, has given him the opportunity see what sort of support strata owners need and how one strata owner’s experience can feed through to benefit another. He is currently a director of Strata Answers Pty Ltd a business focused on helping members of Executive Committees “EC’s” work effectively as a group and get maximum value from their service providers.

Catherine Lezer Catherine Lezer’s passion is property. Currently owning eight strata properties, Catherine has been a member of various executive committees since 1999. “I’ve lived in some great communities and some ‘bad’ ones,” says Catherine.

“I’ve been involved in defect insurance claims, in mediation at CTTT, common area refits, asking recalcitrant owners to pay their levies, water penetrating issues and even had to deal with police raiding a drug dealers’ property in the building where I am currently chairperson. I understand some of what happens out there in strata land.”

Ken DemlakianKen Demlakian is a leading civil, structural and hydraulic engineer whose innovative expertise has been influencing the building and construction industry for almost 30 years. Renown in the industry for his facilitation of business logic, determination and strong application of ethical principles, Ken is recognised nationally for his cost-effective and reliable engineering solutions together with his complete knowledge of the overall design, approval and construction process.

As an expert in the preparation of Defect reports, Audit reports, the investigation of defects, as well as the preparation of technical specifications, Ken has trained his team to aid Strata Managers and Strata Lawyers by providing timely service, efficient support and independent advice to their clients with overwhelming success. The Demlakian team provides technical expertise, and knowledge of legislative requirements and the litigation process to obtain the most cost-effective and sustainable engineering solutions for its clients.
