Review Games

and Activities

In this file, you’ll find: • Green picture cards for the ‘Hula Hoop’ game (see

my blog on the main ‘My Blog’ page or the following ‘Instruction Sheet’ for how to play this).

• There are also green cards with the ‘oo’ word only. I used these with the picture/word Hula Hoop cards and had my pupils play a simple memory game – i.e., matching the word & picture card to just the word card. If you plan to use these, make sure your paper is thick enough that children can’t see through from the other side!

• A complete writing template for a story about a kangaroo.

• Differentiated, abbreviated writing prompts, asking your children to write a story about a kangaroo. I often used these, as it saved on photocopying – the child just pastes the writing prompt into their jotter and then writes in their jotter.

I hope you find these activities useful!

Hula Hoop Game

Instructions

To play this game, you will need a hula hoop, a bean bag, whiteboards, a whiteboard pen, and the square phoneme cards in this file.

The cards are placed inside the hula hoop (face up, to make the job easier, or face down, to make it more challenging). A child throws a bean bag onto the card. Their partner then takes the card and the bean bag thrower has to spell the card’s word on their whiteboard. If they spell the word correctly, they win the card. If not, the card goes back into the middle of the hula hoop. The next child then takes their turn.

My kids always loved this game and would often choose it to play during their own ‘choosing time’ (I had soft starts and soft finishes each day when I taught in infants). It also makes a great ‘fast finisher’ activity.
