Much of the history of Boone County can be traced to the growth of the railroad or coal mining, the latter helping to boost the construction of the former. Madrid is the oldest of the three communities, being founded as Swede Point in 1846. By 1865, Montana, later to be renamed

Boone, was platted by the railroad and soon began to bustle, eventually becoming the county seat. Ogden also sat on this busy rail line, with the town being laid out in 1866. The famous Lincoln Highway runs east to west across Boone County, and includes stops in Boone and Ogden. Boone County still has a strong railroad presence, but has grown to be so much more.

With the lush, 38-mile long Des Moines River Valley running north to south as its anchor, we have a lot to offer when it comes to excellent jobs, education, healthcare, and those little things that make living here as exciting or relaxing as you need.
