Maintain Routines to Yield Fall Success Stick to a regular bedtime

Start on the right foot – get dressed, brush teeth, comb hair and

eat a nutritious breakfast Visit the library – make reading a

habit Limit Screen time – aim for no more than 10 hours per week

Exercise Builds Important Motor Skills Making sure your child has a strong, healthy body is the first step in helping them learn! Strong muscles, bones and joints are the “drivers” of your preschooler’s motor skills. Exercise is one way

to build your child’s motor skills, and it can also help your child by: Reducing Stress – Maintain a healthy weight – Sleep better

To keep your child moving this summer, encourage them to: Run, walk and skip – Parcipate in swim lessons – Ride a bike or

scooter – play a sport – Play a game like hopscotch

- ELEMENTARY PARENTS - MAKING THE DIFFERENCE!

Seven ways to prevent summer reading loss… Your child has worked so hard on strengthening her reading skills all year long and you don’t want to lose them over the summer! Thankfully, there are countless ways to encourage your child – and even improve – their reading skills during summer vacation. You can: Read together – not just books but consider recipes, looking up info online and making lists Keep reading materials handy – Comics, magazines, books and newspapers laying around makes it likely your child will pick them up and read Choose irresistible materials – look for books and articles that relate to your child’s interest (sports, art, fashion, etc.) Talk with experts – get suggestions from library or teachers Visit the library regularly – frequent opportunity Take books with you – On trips, waiting rooms, or anywhere you child might say “I’m bored” Be creative – Listen to audio books, play word games, visit a museum and read about displays. And for group fun, start a book club!

SUMMER CHORE CHART - Summer is a great time to help kids become more responsible. Completing chores builds responsibility and helps them to learn new skills. Select age appropriate chores. Show them how to do it, watch them do it then let them do it on their own. Create a chart and most of all, make it fun! Goals help keep them on track – complete your chart, we’ll go out for a treat!

Insist on respectful and courteous behavior from middle schoolers

Teach your middle schooler good manners

now, and they may grown into a more courteous, respectful adult. To remind

them of what polite behavior looks like: Model it – Let your child see you hold the door for someone or give up your seat on the train to an elderly person. Monitor table manners – Don’t expect flawless manners at the dinner table, but insist on basic etiquette. If you notice your child talking with their mouth full or reaching across someone to grab the butter, politely correct them. Avoid critical remarks – Don’t let your child hear you criticizing teachers or others. If they hear too many not-so-friendly comments from you, she may start thinking it’s okay for her to make similar remarks herself. Role-Play – Help your child practice the proper way to respond when she is introduced to someone. She should say “Hello, it’s nice to meet you,” shake the person’s hand and look her in the eye. Insist on Thank-You notes – There is simply no substitute for a written thank-you.

Try this for fun…

Keep a log of your summer activities!

Summer is prime time for fun and also for risk – especially for middle schoolers, who may not always be in sight of an adult. Here’s a checklist to help keep your summer safe: Do your require your kids to wear sunscreen? Do you insist that helmets be worn when on a bike, scooter or skate- board? Do you consider maturity before assigning chores like mowing with a riding mower? Do you encourage adequate water intake when working out, playing outdoors, etc.? If not, rethink your strategies.

Help Your Teen Maintain Healthy Habits This

Summer with 9-5-2-1-0 If they had it their way, most teens would probably stay up until 2 a.m., sleep until noon, live on nothing but pizza and soda, and maybe – occasionally – head outside into the sunlight. Without the routine provided by school, many teens spend their summers exactly like that! This summer, make sure your teen sticks to a healthy routine. After all, they’ll be heading out into the real world soon and won’t have that bell to summon them to gym class or that cafeteria to provide them with healthy meal choices. They’ll be on their own! That’s where the 9-5-2-1-0 initiative comes in. It encourages teens to aim for: - 9 hours of sleep each night - 5 servings of fruits and vegetables

each day - 2 hours of screen time (or fewer)

each day - 1 hour of physical activity each day - 0 sugar-sweetened drinks each day To make it a little bit easier for your teen, stock your fridge with healthy snacks and make sure they have an alarm clock. By following the 9-5-2-1-0 initiative, your teen will be maintaining healthy habits and practicing self-discipline. After all, you’re not always going to be watching over them to make sure they don’t drink half their body weight in soda!

Summer Jobs Can Teach Your Teenager Important Lessons

Whether it’s life guarding at a local pool or flipping burgers, summer jobs can give teens more than just a paycheck. They can also teach important lessons. One of the most important is responsibility. If your teen doesn’t show up to sit in the lifeguard chair, kids may not be able to swim. A summer job can also give your teen a taste of a career. Are they thinking of becoming a veterinarian? Let them see what it’s like to work with animals. Do they want to be a teacher? Working as a camp counselor can give them a glimpse of what it’s like to work with kids. Sometimes, of course, these experiences teach teens that their original career ideas need a little revising. But it’s far better for your teen to learn now that he doesn’t want to be a vet than after they have taken two or three years of college classes towards that goal! And remember: A job doesn’t have to involve a paycheck. Volunteering also teaches your teen real responsibility, while giving them an opportunity to work for a cause or issue they believe in.

Keep up the momentum… 5 Tips for keeping your kids reading

all summer long 1 – Focus on reading for pleasure and remember that magazines, Sunday comics, news articles about favorite athletes can make reading fun. 2 – Allow them to choose their own books - summer gives kids an opportunity to choose what they read rather than the textbooks chosen for them during the school year 3 – Connect on a different level by passing on a book that you have enjoyed or one that lets your teen know you are aware they are maturing 4 – Read some books written for teens – you might learn things that are on your teen’s mind and open the door to interesting conversations. 5 – Be a good example – your example is a powerful teacher so let your teen see you reading often

NOW GO HAVE SOME FUN!!! BE SAFE!!!

SEE YOU IN AUGUST!
