On the back of this winter's low tem-peratures, it's natural to daydream aboutsun-filled days on sandy beaches. Springbreak is just around the bend and manyWisconsin residents are eagerly planningtheir getaways. The WisconsinDepartment of Agriculture, Trade andConsumer Protection (DATCP) asks vaca-tion deal seekers to watch for scams andpitfalls that can drain their accounts andsink their trips.

"A trip typically requires significantplanning and research, and there are anumber of factors to consider when mak-ing your purchase," said Michelle Reinen,Director of the Bureau of ConsumerProtection. "Shoppers should be leery oftoo-good-to-be-true offers for getaway

packages and should follow up with air-lines, travel services and accommodationsafter making reservations to ensure thatthe booking requests are confirmed withthe end provider."

Watch for scams using free or dis-counted travel in their pitch:

• Mailings, telephone calls, websites, emails or faxes may offer exotic cruises ortrips to tropical paradises, but they areoften pitches for worthless "vacation cer-tificates" or vouchers. These "prizes" aretypically sales gimmicks to get you tomake a purchase, attend a sales presenta-tion or commit to a membership contract.

• A "free" vacation offer may comewith a request for payment for fees ortaxes. Don't pay it. Remember that a

legitimate company will not ask you topay for a prize.

• Scammers post too-good-to-be-trueoffers for vacation rentals in online clas-sified ads using pictures and text stolenfrom real estate listings. The owner willoffer excuses for why they can't meet inperson and ask that you wire money ormake a payment using a pre-paid debitcard in order to hold the rental. Beforeyou make any agreements or paymentson a rental through an online ad, searchfor information about the address of arental property. If the property is sup-posedly located in a resort, contact thefront desk of the resort to confirm detailsabout the location._

Apart from outright scams, know thatbooking a reservation through a third-party cost comparison website is NOT thesame as having a ticket. There is a gap intime between when you make a reserva-tion and when the airline issues a ticketor the hotel locks down a room, andproblems can arise during that discon-nect. There have also been instanceswhere shoppers used unfamiliar bookingsites and learned at the airport that theydid not have a ticket to fly. After makinga reservation through a third-party serv-ice, always call the airline, hotel ortransportation service with your confir-mation numbers in hand in order toensure that your booking is actually inplace.

Additional booking tips to help avoidcomplications when making travelarrangements:

• Never make a purchase through anunfamiliar travel service without firstresearching that company to gauge itslegitimacy.

• When comparing travel deals fromdifferent providers, make sure to takeinto account all possible fees from theproviders as well as their cancellationpolicies.

• Double check that all of your partymember's names and your contact infor-mation are correct before you finalize atravel package purchase.

• Regardless of whether you bookthrough a third-party site or directlythrough a hotel or airline, use a creditcard – especially if you have a travel-focused card that offers trip interruptionand trip cancelation coverage.

For additional information or to file acomplaint, visit the Consumer ProtectionBureau at datcp.wisconsin.gov, call theConsumer Protection Hotline at 800-422-7128 or send an e-mail to [email protected].

BY MELINDA MYERSDress up your salads, sandwiches and

snacks with homegrown microgreens. These mini sprouts are easy to grow, ready to harvest in less than two weeksand require no special growing equip-ment.

Simply purchase seeds labeled formicrogreen growing or organic sproutssuch as sunflowers, kale, radish orcilantro. These are meant for this pur-pose and have not been treated withharmful chemicals.

Radish microgreens add a bit of zipto salads and sandwiches. Cilantromicrogreens have a similar, but muchmilder taste than leaves harvested froma mature plant. Kids of all ages love sun-flower sprouts. They have a nutty flavorand make a tasty snack when eatenalone.

Sprout seeds in a shallow containerwith drainage holes. You can purchasesprouting containers or make your ownfrom clean repurposed fast food contain-ers. Just punch holes in the bottom fordrainage. Use the clear tops to create amini greenhouse, helping retain heatand moisture to speed sprouting.

Fill the container with a quality seedstarting mix like Hsu Germination+organic seed starting mix (hsugrowing-supply.com) that retains moisture andcontains naturally occurring beneficial

soil microbes. Leave about halfan inch of space between the lipof the container and the seedstarting mix.

Sprinkle seeds over the soilsurface and lightly press theminto the soil. Water seeds inplace with a very gentle streamof water or spray bottle. Coverthe planted container toincrease humidity and speedsprouting. Place in a warm darklocation.

Once the greens breakthrough the soil, remove thecover and move the container toa sunny location or under artifi-cial lights. Water often enoughto keep the seed starting mixmoist, but not too wet.

The microgreens are ready toharvest once they form a set oftrue leaves that look like thoseof the plants you are sprouting. This takes about 10 to 14 daysand your microgreens will beabout two inches tall.

Use a sharp pair of scissors to cut thegreens just above the soil surface. Rinsethoroughly right before serving. Storeany extra unwashed greens in a ventilat-ed plastic bag for several days in therefrigerator.

Once you find out how easy micro-

greens are to grow and how tasty theyare to eat, you’ll want to plant more. Fora continual supply of this nutritioustreat, simply plant a new batch everyfour or five days and enjoy!

In the not-so-distant past, extendedfamilies were the norm, with multiplegenerations residing on the same streetif not in the same house.

Today the family unit is largely anamalgam of different situations. The riseof two-income families has pressuredparents into finding childcare situations.Quite often grandparents once again stepin to offer guidance and support foryoungsters. This can be a good thing forboth the grandparents and the grand-children.

Although a bevy of psychologicalresearch focuses on parent-child rela-tionships, new evidence points to thebenefits of the grandchild-grandparentrelationship as well. Close relationships

between these different demographics isoften a sign of strong familial ties.

A study from researchers at BostonCollege discovered that emotionally closeties between grandparents and adultgrandchildren reduced depressive symp-toms in both groups. Research at theUniversity of Oxford among English chil-dren between the ages 11 and 16 foundthat close grandparent-grandchild rela-tionships were associated with benefitsincluding fewer emotional and behav-ioral problems and fewer difficulties withpeers.

Adult and grandchildren alike benefitfrom relationships with their elders.Grandparents can provide a connectionand exposure to different ideas while

providing a link to family history andknowledge regarding traditions and cus-toms not readily available elsewhere.

Nurturing grandparent-grandchildexperiences may be easy for familieswhere grandparents live in the samehouse or close by. For others, it may takesome effort. The following are some waysto facilitate time spent together.

• Schedule regular family reunions orget-togethers. Host or plan multi-gener-ation events that bring the familytogether and expose children to variousmembers of their family.

• Promote one-on-one time. Havegrandchildren spend time with grandpar-ents in intimate settings. Alone time canbe good for both and offers each undi-vided attention. A meal at a restaurant

or time spent doing a puzzle or craft canbe interesting to both generationsinvolved.

• Video chat when possible. If dis-tance makes frequent visits challenging, use technology to bridge that gap. Sendphotos, letters and electronic communi-cations. Tech-savvy grandparents can useSkype or Facetime to stay in touch andspeak one-on-one with their grandchil-dren.

• Share skills with each other. Eithergeneration can play teacher to the other.Grandparents may have certain skills, such as baking, sewing or wood crafts, they can impart that may not be readilytaught today. Children can help grand-parents navigate computers, video gamesor sports activities.
