REPORTS AND NAPS OF WORK DONE IN HORSESHOE LAKE AREA.

  • REPORT

While employed by Dome Exploration, I found and staked gold occurrences in area where east branch of the Pipestone flows into Horseshoe Lake, Map 5, also staked a showing several miles south. Gold could be panned readily from soil in north claim group. A very restricted, very heavy deposit of gold occurs in soil on shore in claims.

Follow up panning around lake indicated gold occurred in soil on island at east end. Later I staked 11 claims and optioned them to Canadian Occidental Petroleum. Subsequently, the whole belt staked on strike, so my group could not be extended. Canadian Occidental maped, did mag. and geophysics, and also blasted trenchs across island, although my previous stripping and trenching indicated that gold did not occur in place there.

Maps l and 2 show how prospect area can be accessed. From landing on Pipestone River it is about 18 miles through river and lake to the area. Bush planes work out of Pickle Lake.

lan Tetlock, local prospector and trapper, agreed to accompany me and went to area by highway and water. We took 2 canoes, gear and grub for a month. This is probably not the most desirable way to reach area.

We determined to use soil sampling and analysis to attempt to extend and follow gold occurrences in soil at east end of lake.

Old trenches were cleaned and new trenches and pits were dug on island. Quite a bit of panning was done. This is moraine material (Map 4) sorted locally. While gold could be panned readily on island and a few pans produced a couple of colours on south shore. The lake eliminated follow up this way. Area east of creek on south shore and off Esker north shore were apparently more widely bedded.

We took 123 samples of about 300 grams, at about l' to 1.5' depth roughly following the 3.50 contour. (Map 6 - soil survey - five figure numbers) The material varied quite a bit. The best price given us was C.D.N. Labs, Burnaby, B.C., so samples were sent there. Assayers reports sheet l and 2 show method used. Results sheets 3 and 4.

On receipt of assay results we decided to continue sampling up drift. We flew via Green Airways Beaver Aircraft to area with can of gear and grub for week - September 8/92.

  • Page 2

This time by compass and pace we tried to be more systematic (Nay 6 - Soil survey samples l - 75). We also wanted to collect gold particles for microscopic review. Unfortunately, we were wind bound on the last day and only 4 particles were collected from island and south shore. Samples were sent to C.D.N. labs for analysis. Ontario Geological Survey Geologist made microscopic examination of gold particles. Assays sheet 6.

Twenty-four of the remainder - 50 mesh from C.D.N. labs were sent to T.S.L. labs , Saskatoon, for reassay (sheets 5-9).

    Reassays C.N.D. labs, sheet 7-8.

The area sampled. Series B, is a flat glaciolacutrine deposit gently sloping up (50' in 6 miles) to the more steeply rising crest of the Agutua Moraine (Map 5). There is more extensive bedding.

The weather was incredibly bad this summer and our work was curtailed accordingly. The lake level was so high, shoreline search for float was eliminated.

My pencil sample plan does not print well unfortunately.

Microscopic examination of gold particles indicated they had been moved some distance.

    COMMENTS

There is an anomolous amount of gold in area.

Series A mostly unsorted moraine material probably assays in lover range high.

Series B mostly bedded material - range in assays more realistic.

    It would seem:

    1. 200 ppb quite anomolous.

    2. Gold probably occurrs in -50 to +200 mesh sievings.

    3. To trace gold this fraction should be assayed - periodic checks made on other sievings.

  • Page 4

    4. Probably a bed or zone could be established at area samples 27-30-35 and 44-54-59. Gold could probably be panned in this area.

    5. Method could be established in field to reduce shovel of soil to 30 grams of material and to collect for assay, making it easier to trace.

    6. With all variables involved, collecting, preparing and assaying samples. Specific methods more useful in specific areas.

    7. I don't know what background means either.

    8. Work should be continued up drift, maybe sampling at a little more depth with auger.
