POPE FRANCIS TELLS CHRISTIANS TO SHARE THEIR

GIFTS WITH EACH OTHER In light of the week of prayer for Christian unity (18-25 January 2019), the Pope Francis reminds Christians that “to take the first step toward unity requires humble recognition of the fact that the blessings Catholics and other Christians have received do not belong to them by “right,” but are a gift meant to be shared with others.

“We must acknowledge the value of the grace granted to other Christian communities,” he continued. “As a result, we will want to partake of the gifts of others. A Christian people renewed and enriched by this exchange of gifts will be capable of journeying firmly and confidently on the path that leads to unity.” Held at Rome's Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, the service marked the beginning of the Octave of Prayer for Christian Unity. In his homily, Pope Francis reflected on the week’s theme, “Seek to be truly just,” inspired by the line from Deuteronomy which says: “Justice, justice alone shall you pursue, so that you may live and possess the land the Lord, your God, is giving you.” One of the grave injustices of today, he said, is the vast disparity in wealth which exists in many countries around the world. “When society is no longer based on the principle of solidarity and the common good, we witness the scandal of people living in utter destitution amid skyscrapers, grand hotels and luxurious shopping centers,” he said. “We have forgotten the wisdom of the Mosaic law: if wealth is not shared, society is divided.” He pointed to St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans, where the same idea is applied: those who are strong must bear with the weak. “Following Christ’s example, we are to make every effort to build up those who are weak. Solidarity and shared responsibility must be the laws that govern the Christian family.” He also reminded Christians that it is a “grave sin to belittle or despise the gifts that the Lord has given our brothers and sisters, and to think that God somehow holds them in less esteem.” “When we entertain such thoughts, we allow the very grace we have received to become a source of pride, injustice and division. And how can we then enter the promised kingdom?” he asked. “It is easy to forget the fundamental equality existing among us,” he said, “that once we were all slaves to sin, that the Lord saved us in baptism and called us his children. It is easy to think that the spiritual grace granted us is our property, something to which we are due.”

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR CONSECRATED LIFE

On Saturday, February 2, the Church celebrates the World Day of Prayer for Consecrated Life. In the Archdiocese of Toronto, we are blessed to have living and serving among us more than 900 consecrated men and women. The World Day for Consecrated Life is a wonderful opportunity for us to thank God for the gifts of these sisters, virgins, brothers and priests and to pray for God’s blessing upon them in their efforts to faithfully live the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity and obedience.

Bishop Wayne Kirkpatrick will preside at a special Mass on Sunday, February 3rd, 2019 at 3 p.m. at St. Paul’s Basilica, Toronto, in celebration of the vocation and witness of these special men and women, who are such a vital and important part of the life and ministry of the Church in our Archdiocese. All are welcome to attend. (Icon: Vivian Imbruglia, Iconographer)

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Update On behalf of the families who have received financial assistance through the generous donations received in the poor boxes, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul would like to thank the parishioners of Blessed Frédéric Ozanam for their support. In 2018, we ran 3 successful drives for food, personal hygiene and cleaning products that were passed on to needy families through the 2 local food banks. We also had a very successful Christmas Gift Card programme where we were not only able to provide special Christmas assistance to all the families requesting help in the Blessed Frédéric Ozanam parish area, but to needy families in 2 other parishes where the need for help far exceeds the donations received by the local parishes. In 2018, we received $8,109 through the poor boxes and provided $13,125 in assistance to families in need. In order to support the families in the Blessed Frédéric Ozanam parish area who call on the Society of St. Vincent de Paul for help, we have had to rely on the support of the St. Patrick's conference and we thank them for their financial support.

In 2019, the St. Vincent de Paul conference at Blessed Frédéric Ozanam parish will be running independently from the St. Patrick's conference. We are currently looking for parishioners who can help us build this new conference. To learn more about how you can help your neighbours in need by becoming a member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, please meet in the library after any Mass on the weekend of February 2/3. We will have Vincentians there to answer your questions and explain the membership process.

MASS INTENTION REQUESTS If you would like to have a Mass offered for a deceased loved one, or for a special intention, please visit our office in the foyer of the school, before or after Mass, or call the Parish office at 289-554-0556 to make arrangements. We offer

weekday morning Masses as well as our weekend Masses.
