FROM THE PRESIDENT NIGEL SHAW
FROM THE PRESIDENT’S COURT
Dear loyal Members of Nedlands Tennis Club.... A very ‘warmish’ welcome to the upcoming Summer Season of Tennis for 2016 -17. I’m no farmer, but I reckon we’ve had a pretty cold , wet winter and a similar spring which, when combined with some anticipated sunshine, will mean that our crop of grass should be looking really good for Opening Day on October 15th..... The 2016 – 17 Committee was formed at the July AGM, and you should all be aware that Deb Lord is taking up a Vice President’s role, Jane Edwards in taking over from Nat as Treasurer, Helen Morgan has again taken up the very challenging League Coordinator role, and Mehmet is continuing to do a fine job as our Captain. Janet Ferreira has now joined Mel English, Trish Heath, Anne Love, Linda Blatchford, Warren Vickers and Peter French on a very enthusiastic and dedicated Committee. Julie Lilburne, Nathalie Smalberger, Pip Micalizzi – now our newest Life Member – and Peggy Darmago resigned from Committee, and we all owe them a huge thank you for their dedication to the Club. In particular Peggy, who has handed on the production of the fine publication that you are now reading, to our now Club Manager Karen Phillips, who is a most welcome and key member of our ‘team..’...... It is also with some delight that we also welcome the Club’s first ‘Honorary Life Member’ Shane Watson, our groundsman who does much more for us all than ‘just tend the grass’. To get Shane to an AGM was a challenge that could only be dealt with by ‘extreme diplomacy, and not a little stealth’, and without ‘exposing anyone’, our sincere thanks to you [all] for achieving the ‘impossible’ and making the recognition of Shane’s achievement much more memorable. I regret to inform you, that at the time of writing the Coachs’ office has been broken into three times in one week, with two nights’ of successive break ins. Shane and I have dealt with some of the physical repair, the incidents are reported to Police, and I have requested a meeting with the City of Nedlands CEO to ‘partner the Club’ in dealing with not only ongoing security, but also associated concerns that I have for the physical nature of the Clubhouse. It is after all a ‘valuable Community and City asset..’ We need to protect not only the building, but also Warren’s business, and I’ll be doing all that I can in this regard to receive assistance from the City of Nedlands..... On a much brighter note, Committee is undertaking a review of maintenance and fit out of the Clubhouse, and you will notice some changes in the very near future. We are also about to draft out an overall plan for grounds and court development, aiming for funding assistance as soon as possible. All members will have opportunities to comment on the plans once they are under way.... I can’t think of anything else to say at this point, other than that I look forward to us all enjoying our Junior and Senior Opening Days in October, and also to ask that as many of us as possible give a thought to helping out at the ‘busy bee/dustoff the cobwebs’ day on Saturday October 8th... With thanks to you all for your support and companionship

CAPTAINS REPORT MEHMET CAKIR
Hello everyone!
As the new summer season is upon us I hope everyone is taking advantage of the beautiful spring time. Considering
we have had so much rain this winter we are bound to have a dry and hot summer but hope not so hot!
After a well-attended AGM in late July and the unanimous approval of the members I am very happy to be serving as
the Club captain for one more year. My job has been made relatively easy with the generous time and support of so
many of you as the duty captains on Saturdays and I do very much thank all those involved and also those of you
who prepared afternoon teas and served around the bar. We recognise that the club could not possibly function
without the generosity of our volunteer members. With that in mind I’d like to remind you the roster duties for the
new season are at the back of this Network. We’d appreciate it if you could check your time and date to make sure
you are available. If not for some reason we’d be grateful if you could find a replacement and swap with someone on
the list and let me or Club administrator know.
Jordan Lilburn has been very committed in organising our sets as fairly as possible, and Paige is looking after and
entertaining the kids very patiently. I thank both Jordan and Paige for their commitment and services.
We are vigorously working on improving our social activities. The social subcommittee, led by Deb Lord, is working
on the social calendar including additional ‘play and stay’ on Saturdays throughout the year. We would particularly
like to encourage and welcome our non-regular Saturday social players, and those members playing at other times
during the week, to join us for tennis, light food and company. Further we always welcome our friends and members
who whatever reason are not currently playing tennis – we’d love to see you all.
Grass courts are rejuvenating well for the summer season and Shane and his team have been doing a great job in
getting them ready for the new season. Some courts will be available on Oct., 8th, our traditional busy-bee day. For
that day please get ready with your gloves and brooms and etc. and bring them along to help us tidy up around the
clubhouse and surrounding gardens.
Any comments on Club Captaincy related or any other matters would be welcomed directly to me or any of the
Committee members

First of all, a huge thank you to all the wonderful members who assist the club by running the bar every
weekend. Not only does this provide a great opportunity for members to gather for a drink at the end of
the days play, it also brings in valuable funds for the club. In order to comply with the regulations set out
by Clubs WA, there are a few matters which we are required to do each time the bar is open, some of
which are being overlooked on occasions.
When you are on bar duty could you please ensure that you fill in the date, name and signature
details on the NTC Bar Staff Register Sheet which is on the pin up board in the bar.
Could you also write your name on the Temporary Manager Sheet which is on the clipboard next
to the bar in front of the bar.
Place a jug of water and several glasses on the bar and refill during the evening. Ensure no-one
who is not RSA trained assists in serving drinks.
Ensure no children are present in the bar or office at any time
There is a more detailed list of duties behind the bar. If anyone has any queries please contact Trish Heath
who is the RSA Coordinator for the club. Furthermore, if any member is interested in becoming trained in
RSA procedures please email the club [email protected] and we will forward you the relevant
information about what you need to do.
Another extended thankyou goes out to Rob Lilburne, who kindly donated $600 which was monies raised
during an in house Winter Men’s League Competition. What a lovely gesture Rob, on behalf of the club
thank you once again!!

NEARING THE END OF AN AMAZING ERA FOR OUR CURRENT NEDLAND’S GIRLS UNDER 16
TEAM….by Mark Lawrence
Congratulations to our Nedlands Girls Under 16 pennant team, who last Summer won their 4th pennant.
Since first appearing as an under 12 team in 2011 our original NTC girls have traveled near and far each Sunday morning,
during both Winter and Summer pennants to play some amazing matches.
The girls displayed an amazing ability over the years to peak for finals. They consistently displayed fearless and tenacious
tennis match play, especially in the key moments of their matches. It was also great to see the many friendships formed and
many laughs with their team mates, as well as with girls from the opposing teams at the after match morning teas.
Thanks to Warren Vickers and Alan Lane for their great coaching and guidance for the girls. Also special mention to Nicole
Anderson the team’s original team manager and to Angela Steens the girls previous team manager. (By the way if Angela
Steens offers you one of her freshly baked scones, say yes.)
Best wishes to our new team manager Toni Jenkins and our current NTC U16 girls line up, for 1 more Summer of great
tennis together.

Norfolk Island Norfolk has a unique beauty of its own, with its renowned tall majestic
pines, sheer cliff faces, coral reefs and beautiful beaches. Almost one third of the
island is devoted to National Parks & Reserves.
But Norfolk Island is far more than a picturesque island in the South Pacific, it is
paradise with a past. Elegant convict-built Georgian buildings are still in daily use
and the Kingston and Arthur’s Vale Historic Area (KAVHA) is now World
Heritage Listed as part of the Australian Convict Sites inscription. What was once
a convicts settlement is now the tranquil home of the descendants from the
famous Mutiny on the Bounty, who have their own unique culture and their own
language.
There is much to see and do on Norfolk Island including: golf on an incredibly
scenic course beside the sea, fishing, sea kayaking, edible gardens & eco tours,
art galleries, bushwalking, glass bottom boat coral reef trips & Philip Island
trekking, golf, bowls, tennis, squash, yoga, kayaking, swimming, snorkeling, &
much more.
Take advantage of Norfolk’s bargain shopping or simply take some time out to relax
& enjoy Norfolk’s peaceful existence.
