    What is Open Source

Source code is licenced under the GNU or

    GPL (General Public Licence)

the license allows modification, and re-

distribution of the software and source code

requires derived code to be available under the

    same or a comparable licence

source code can be used across applications

    and operating systems

    Free Open Source Software (FOSS)

    FlowMap

FlowMap is a freeware application designed to

    analyse and display flow data.

    Eg. Transport; hydrological model results

Developed at the Faculty of Geographical

Sciences of the Utrecht University in the

    Netherlands.

    Platforms: Windows OS

    GRASS

    Geographic Resources Analysis Support System

Originally developed by the US Government.

GRASS is probably the most well-known open

source and original GIS software application.

Strong image processing and spatial modelling

    system.

Platforms: Windows OS, Linux, Macintosh, Sun

Solaris, Silicon Graphics Irix, HP-UX, and DEC-Alpha
