A STORY OF SUCCESS

LIVIA’S

LIVIA CASTELLANOS Associate Vice-President (International) & Chief International Officer (UR ILO)

People ask me why I love working with international students. It’s easy to answer – I was one! In 1998, after earning my law degree, I left my hometown of Tabasco, Mexico to further my studies at the University of Regina. I was young and a little bit scared to move to a new country, but there was always something about Regina that felt like home.

Regina is just the right size for me. It’s big enough to have what you want in a city: museums, restaurants and cultural festivals. But it’s also small enough to feel like a community. I always felt safe and it was easy to make friends. In Regina, I wasn’t just a little fish swimming in a massive ocean.

After I graduated, I worked at the University of Alberta for eight years, and then with the University of Winnipeg, but Regina never left my heart. When I had the opportunity to come back, I was so excited.

All of my academic achievements, every project I’ve led, every strategy I’ve implemented—they’ve all led me to Regina where I can make a difference for our international students. I know what our students need because I’ve been one, and I’ve dedicated my career to them. Here’s why I believe the University of Regina is the best place for international students:

• We are sitting on a mountain of potential. Regina and Saskatchewan are just now realizing what an economic powerhouse they can be. Our international students are key to unlocking that potential. This is a place where good ideas turn into action.

• We have a foundation of success. In the last 10 years, University of Regina International has grown by leaps and bounds. It’s more than just enrollment, it’s the quality of education and experience we can provide. The return on investment you receive is incredible.

• You always have a place here. Our campus isn’t a sea of people. It’s where you can build relationships and establish your reputation. Local employers welcome our students because they’ve seen amazing results in the past.

MY LIFE IN REGINA TODAYEvery day, I get to help our international students be their very best. I’m part of this community too. My husband and 12-year-old son are part of this community. Our students are part of this community. Regina is a place where dreams can become reality. I’m proof of that.

WE’VE GOT

What’s the most important thing to your family? If you’re like most parents, safety is your top priority.

When your child attends the University of Regina, you can trust that their safety is our priority too. On campus, the U of R has a dedicated security team that looks out for all students, faculty and visitors.

In the city, the Regina Police Service has been protecting the community since the 1890s. In an emergency, police, firefighters and paramedics are just a quick phone call away.

Regina is also home to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The RCMP is the police force that serves rural areas and small towns around Regina. Safety and security is part of the culture here.

WE HAVE A STRATEGY THAT WORKS FOR YOUR CHILDWhen you’re young and applying for a job, employers are more likely to hire you if you have work experience. But how do you get that experience? At University of Regina International, we use Co-operative Education (Co-op). As part of your child’s degree, they can work in their chosen field with a local employer. It’s a program that’s full of benefits for international students:

• Get help from us to find the right job opportunity.

• Get experience in your area of study.

• Earn a salary while you learn on the job. (U of R students have earned millions of dollars over the years.)

• Make contacts in the industry and establish your reputation as a great employee. After graduation, many students get jobs where they worked as Co-op students.

• Get the experience you need to impress future employers down the road.

THE CO-OP PROGRAM IS SO GOOD, IT’S GUARANTEEDWith Co-op, your child will work with a U of R advisor who will support them through all parts of university life. If your

child completes all elements of the UR Guarantee program and doesn’t secure career-related employment within six months of graduation, they can come back for another year of undergraduate classes for free. That’s the UR Guarantee.

Our Co-op program is the biggest in Western Canada. And it’s a big part of the reason you’ll love the return on investment you get at the University of Regina.

HISexperienceLUCAS BRAGAWhen I had the opportunity to leave Brazil and study anywhere in the world in 2014, I chose the University of Regina because I was told that it’s the place with the best employment opportunities for international students. It’s the truth. The U of R’s Co-op program prepared me really well and I got an internship at the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure. The job was challenging, motivating and rewarding, from financial and experience standpoints.

After going back to Brazil, I struggled to find a job in my field. I decided to come back to Regina where I knew I would be successful. I completed my Master’s in

Industrial Engineering with Honours. During my studies, I worked as an Administrative Assistant at UR International, a Teaching Assistant at the U of R, and a Co-op student at SaskPower. Shortly after graduating, I was hired for the Engineer-in-Training Development Program of SaskPower, one of the best trainee programs in Canada.

The University of Regina not only gave me knowledge and experience, it also helped me adapt to Canada’s culture, and eased all the bureaucracy (visas, health card, taxes, etc.) I had to navigate.

HERexperienceJENNY LIUI left China in 2012 to pursue my Master of Statistics Degree at the University of Regina. It was a big step for me, but I’m so glad I took it. Studying in Regina has given me knowledge, experience and self-confidence.

During my Co-op Program in 2014, I worked with the Ministry of Economy in the Government of Saskatchewan. I was very excited as that was my first official job in Canada, and I could apply what I learned in university to my daily job duties.

With my academic performance, research work at the University of Regina, as well as my Co-op experience, I became a

permanent employee at ISM Canada (an IBM Company) as a Predictive Application Analyst after graduation. I work with colleagues from around the world, and everyone is really friendly and supportive.

My life in Regina has been very rewarding. Coming to study at the University of Regina has absolutely been the best choice I’ve made. The city has so much to offer, and the Co-op program opens up so many marvelous opportunities that you will discover here.

HISexperienceRAMY SAADELDINMy time at the University of Regina as a PhD candidate was truly remarkable! I completed my PhD in Environmental Systems Engineering in 2016 and since then my career has taken off in a great way. Having the University of Regina as a part of my background has opened up professional opportunities as evident in my work at AMEC FOSTER WHEELER and STANTEC. I appreciate the opportunities and support that come with studying at the University of Regina and highly recommend the University to international students looking to make a positive impact to their career and their future!

RAMY’S EMPLOYERRamy is a Senior Engineer with experience in projects in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan, as well as internationally. He provides geotechnical design services on multi-disciplinary engineering projects for public and private sector clients. Ramy has been working with STANTEC for almost three years.

Ramy’s design approach draws on industry practices, academic research, and incorporates a wide range of geotechnical software packages and methodologies. With a research and academic background, he’s published papers on ground improvement techniques, soil-structure interaction, and foundations on soft soils in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings.

Ramy is a valuable team member for his skills and positive attitude. His interest in research has not diminished and I have had the pleasure of developing five conference papers with him in the last three years. And I’m certain that there are many more to come.
