Questions to think about when planning to open a recreational pot shop:
How easy is it to open a recreational pot shop in Colorado?
What do you have to do to get started, and once you’re up, then what?
**Worry not, dear readers. Here’s a few things that you might want to know about selling legal weed in the Rocky Mountain State….
The Legal Procedure
Don’t be put off by those who tell you that starting a marijuana business involves a tangled web of legal complications.
It’s really not the all-consuming nightmare it might first sound.
First, you’ll have to undergo a vetting and background checking from the CBI (Colorado Bureau of Investigation).
They’ll be looking to see that you don’t have any felonies for Controlled Substance charges, or any charges “have not been fully discharged for five years prior to applying.”
From there, you’ll need to fill in a retail marijuana application form, and gather together your supporting documents (such as proof of ID) that you can take to your application appointment.
Once the license has been approved, you’re also going to need Occupational Licenses for each person working in your business, and a retail marijuana bond.
Colorado’s Marijuana Enforcement Division have all the forms you’ll need on their website, but if you want to learn a little more about them before you dive in, we’ve also put together our own guide to Colorado marijuana licenses.
Opening Times
Once you’ve opened your legal marijuana store, you’ll need to abide by the rules dictation when you can and can’t operate.
State-wide, the law says that you can be open for business between 8AM and midnight, giving you plenty of time to trade.
That said, be sure to check your own city’s regulations, since they are allowed to impose further restrictions. In Denver, for example, you’ll need to shut shop by 7PM.
How Much You Can Sell
When a customer comes into your pot shop, you’re allowed to sell them up to once ounce (28 grams) of cannabis in a single transaction.
It’s important to note that the one ounce you just sold them is the maximum they’re allowed to have in their possession.
For out-of-towners, the regulations are a little different. If your customer comes from somewhere other than Colorado, you’ll only be able to sell them a quarter once.
