Trailing 3-2 after three innings, the Mariners tied the game on a solo home run from DH Willie Horton in the 4th inning, and took the lead for good with a 2-run 6th inning. Right fielder Leon Roberts hit a go-ahead 2-run home run that proved to be the game-winner. After a nine-game road trip to begin the season, the Mariners returned to Seattle and picked up their third win of the season, defeating the Oakland Athletics 5-0. Starting pitcher Floyd Bannister pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits and striking out eight. The game was tied through the bottom of the 4th inning until Seattle left fielder, Bruce Botche, knocked in a run with a base hit. Right fielder, Al Cowens, then blasted his second home run of the season, driving in three more runs. Seattle pitcher Gaylord Perry made the last opening day start of his 22-season career. In their win over the Yankees, the Mariners took a three-run lead in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by DH Richie Zisk’s 2-run home run. The Yankees returned the call to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning with back-to-back home runs off of starter Perry. Right fielder Al Cowens popped a sacrifice fly in the seventh to score CF Dave Henderson to edge over New York. Seattle closer Bill Caudill entered in the eighth, going on to pitch 1.2 innings, while striking out three and earning the save. The Mariners rallied through ten innings to beat Toronto 3-2 in Seattle’s first extra inning home opener. With one out in the bottom of the ninth, the Mariners tied the game as first basemen Ken Phelps brought home pinch runner Phil Bradley with an RBI single. Seattle reliever Mike Stanton came in to pitch then tenth inning – after allowing a hit, and having one hit batter, Stanton struck out the final Toronto batter, stranding two Blue Jays on base. Bradley returned to bat in the B-10th, hitting a walk-off single to score SS Spike Owen and win the game. After posting 13 hits – 12 through four innings- and driving in six runs, the Mariners topped the Athletics 6-3 in their fourth consecutive home-opener win. Seattle got on the board early with two RBI singles in the first inning. The Athletics claimed the lead in the third but Seattle replied with another pair of RBI singles. In the fifth, RF Al Cowens brought home another run via triple – helping to secure Seattle’s lead. Cowens and catcher Bob Kearny both finished with 2 RBI. The Mariners 10-inning battle with the California Angels ended with an impressive two-out walk-off grand slam by third baseman Jim Presley – his second home run of the game. After giving up two Oakland home runs in the first, the Mariners were unable to tie the game until the ninth inning. Presley knocked a two-run home run off of Oakland reliever Donnie Moore to tie the game. He finished the game going 3 for 4 with 6 runs batted in. Seattle suffered a tough loss at the home opener against the Twins. The sole scoring product for the Mariners came in the fourth inning with an RBI single by third basemen Jim Presley, which score left fielder Phil Bradley who had reached base on an error. Minnesota pulled ahead in the fifth inning when Seattle’s starting pitcher, Mike Morgan, gave up an RBI double and a two-run home run. Again, in the eighth inning, the Twins tacked on another three runs off Morgan to further secure their lead. Returning to the Kingdome with a 3-3 record to open the season, the Mariners edged past Oakland to pick up their first home win of the season. Pitcher Steve Trout, making his first career start with the Mariners, gave up two early runs to Oakland. Seattle responded quickly, tying the game in the bottom of the second with two RBI doubles. In the third, the Mariners took the lead when first baseman Alvin Davis, and DH Ken Phelps knocked out back-to-back home runs – their first home runs of the season. A two-run home run in the sixth inning by 2B Harold Reynolds helped to secure the win for the Mariners. Seattle’s seven runs on eleven hits were unable to match Oakland’s dominating presence, as the Athletics hit 21 times off the Mariners. Oakland led by eleven runs through five innings, when Seattle outfielder Jeffrey Leonard brought in two more runs with a sixth inning homer. In this hitting frenzy game, there were only a combined four strikeouts issued. Ken Griffey also posted a solo home run in the win during his first at bat in his Kingdome debut. To begin the 6th year of his career, Seattle pitcher Randy Johnson took to the mound for his first career opening day performance. The Mariners held a cushioned 8-3 lead heading into the 8th inning that had been built, in part, by back-to-back home runs by LF Kevin Mitchell and 1B Pete O’Brien in the 7th. The Rangers pulled a monster 2-out rally and scored nine runs in the 8th inning – taking the lead from Seattle. Randy Johnson started in his second consecutive home opener for the Mariners, as they held the Blue Jays to just one run in their 8-1. Johnson had an outstanding eight inning performance on the mound. He allowed a single run in the first inning, but ultimately struck out 14 batters. The Mariners offence also displayed their strength, home runs from CF Ken Griffey and first basemen Tino Martinez. Seattle second baseman Rich Amaral when 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. The game marks Lou Piniella’s debut as the Mariners manager. Seattle opened the 1994 season with a ten inning walk-off win against Minnesota. The Mariners had plated eight and held the lead going into the 8th inning – but a four run 8th for the Twins tied the game. Seattle was unable to reply to the Twins rally and the game was sent to extra innings. Seattle allowed a walk in the top of the 10th, but the runner was left stranded. With two outs, and two men on for the Mariners in the bottom of the tenth inning, third basemen Mike Blowers pushed the Mariners ahead with a line drive single to right field to score SS Felix Fermin. In his Mariner debut, catcher Dan Wilson went 3-for-five with a triple, two doubles, and two runs scored. The Mariners opener versus the Chicago White Sox was the first ever Major League game played in March, and was televised to a national audience on ESPN. Seattle was behind early as Randy Johnson allowed a first inning 2-run homer. Left fielder Darren Bragg scored the first Mariner run in the 5th inning, with his one-out solo homer. They eventually tied the game in the bottom of the 9th, as pinch runner Alex Diaz scored on an Edgar Martinez RBI double. This 12-inning battle, the longest opening day in club history, ended with as SS Alex Rodriguez recorded a one-out RBI walk-off single to put Seattle ahead, winning 3-2. The Mariners dropped a 6-5 decision to the Chicago White sox on this April Fools home opener. CF Mike Cameron knocked out a second-inning solo home run, which accounted for all of the runs produced until the sixth inning. Chicago edged ahead with a 2-run RBI double in the sixth, and returned in the seventh to score four more. For only the fourth time in major league history, a hurler under the age of 21 won an Opening Day assignment as 20-year old Venezuelan right-hander Felix Hernandez pitched eight strong innings in the Mariners 4-0 victory over the A's at Safeco Field. The young ace allowed three hits, walked three, and dealt 12 strikeouts in this opening day shut out. Seattle scoring came in the sixth inning, after being held to one hit through six innings - a Raul Ibanez sacrifice fly scored RF Ichiro Suzuki. 1B Raul Sexson followed and hit a home run to deep right center, adding three RBI.

Up next, SS Yuniesky Betancourt put the ball in play to the pitcher whose throwing error to first allowed Betancourt to score and Gutierrez to reach base securing the win for Seattle.
