The 'Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct', the new commercial hub situated in the historic world heritage site of

Galle Fort was declared open recently.

His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa graced the

opening ceremony as the Chief Guest. Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the driving force behind the urban development programme was also present at the occasion.

Chief Guest, President Rajapaksa unveiled a plaque to mark the occasion and visited the shops during the event.

The President presented certificates of appreciation to the officials and other personnel who contributed their valuable services

The Dutch Hospital is an iconic structure that was originally built by the Portuguese and later

developed by the Dutch. Today the Galle Dutch Hospital has been transformed to an attractive shopping mall similar to the one in Colombo Fort.

Steps were taken to renovate the historical buildings in the Galle Fort under the directions of the Secretary Defence in accordance with the heritage buildings development project. Thereafter, plans were drawn to give this exclusive fortress a facelift while entrusting the 10th Engineering Service Regiment of the Sri Lanka Army with the construction work. Combining the expertise of the Urban Development Authority (UDA) and the army, the

Dutch Hospital was renovated with modern facilities while retaining its original architectural designs.

The Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct has eighteen shops split across the ground and first floor. Selling gems, jewellery, tea, spices, antiques and several restaurants the Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct adds value to the sprawling Dutch Fort in Galle.PresideNt MahiNda rajaPakse at shilPa
