https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BMTk4ODQzNDY3Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwODA0NTM4Nw@@._V1_.jpgIntroduction

The thriller film that I will be analyzing the opening sequence is The Dark Knight Rises, directed by Christopher Nolan and released in 2012. The film is about a super hero called batman after the eight years after the Joker's reign of anarchy, the Dark Knight, with the help of Catwoman, is forced from his imposed exile to save Gotham City, now from a new foe, the brutal guerrilla terrorist Bane.

The Target audience is probably around the age of 13 and over because of how it is a super hero movies so teenagers will enjoy it and adults too. The film rating is pg-13 showing that it might get dark so its less enjoyable for kids under that age since this film has some dark themes.

How the narrative is introduced/set up

Within the first few seconds of the opening sequence shows the death of a character from its previous film. Some people might have not seen the prequel of this film but the introduction is well made because the character showed his death so people can know what had happened without confusion.

Also The opening sequence shows three hostages, this already shows the narrative to contain dark and violent themes in the story.

This shows the equilibrium of the story as it gives the audience an idea of what is going to happen and the narrative itself. Also engages the audience straight away because of the suspense of the hostages.

How the characters are introduced

Within the opening sequence many characters are introduced but we dont know who the main protagonist is

For example, this first look at the characters is that they are interacting with each other so we know what their aims and goals are. This will eventually all lead up to the protagonist of the film

This shows that events will happen before leading up to the main protagonist giving the audience engaged and wanted to know more. The suspense of the hostages also attracts the audiences attention because death might occur at any moment

However the main villain or protagonist has been already represented in the opening sequence

For example, the first scene of him is that of revealing him from under a mask. He was hidden among the three hostages. The setting is within an aircraft with only soldiers and mercenaries inside.

This shows that the protagonist or villain is secretive because he was hidden under a mask. This gives the audience a sense of what the character might be and how it will deal with it in the story of the movie.

This links to Levi-Strauss binary oppositions and will help the audience gain idea of the narrative that will be in the film such as good vs evil

How the genre and themes are established/communicated

The thriller genre is shown and expressed with suspense action sequences at the start.

For example the opening sequence escalated very quickly into a action suspense scene. The scene starts with hostages on a plane, while one of the hostage is either the main hero or villain. This is used to quickly get the attention of the audience. The

This helps show the thriller genre because the setting is very unique and the purpose of the character in the mask is unknown with suspense and mystery elements in the scene.

Within the opening sequence the main antagonist or protagonist is shown to be calm and planned everything according to his plan.

For example he is wearing an oddly mask which is unique showing that he might be someone important in the film. This links to Levi Strauss's Binary Opposite theory because we can tell that this character is a villain because of the actions he has done which is the opposite of the hero.

This shows that the main protagonist or antagonist may be very powerful since he planned the whole journey on the plane. The mise en scene is that his outfit Is very different than others so the audience can know who is more important in this opening sequence.

How people/places/events are represented.

The camerawork and editing also help represent the setting. This is because for example the used of a high angle shows the plane. While the editing is used to show that the setting is placed inside the plane

The editing is done by having a quick transition from the inside to the outside of the plane with the help of the camera angle to show the setting.

This shows that the setting is in an unusual place, gaining the attention of the audience because of how unusual the setting is. Also this creates suspense because the plane can have many possibilities including crashing.

Conclusion

In conclusion the used of camerawork and editing brings out more of the opening sequence with every detail possible. Also the use of costumes and props help give an effect of which character should stand out more to the audience, drawing the attention to the character. Suspense and action can help hugely on the opening sequence because it gains the audience attention because of how good and unique the start is so that they will enjoy watching the whole film due to being drawn at the start. Theory's such as Levi Strausss Binary opposition theory gives the opening sequence a better understanding and more noticeable approach. This is because the main protagonist and antagonist will most likely show up at the start, the audience can pick out which is who due to the theory and the opposites of each character makes it easier. From my analysis I will be using these features in my production such as the binary opposition theory and the use of camerawork and editing to gain the attention of the audience quickly and sharply
