Page 14: Operating Instructions and Cookery Book Microwave Oven

1. Do not operate the oven without the RollerRing and Glass Turntable in place.

2. Only use the Glass Turntable specificallydesigned for this oven. Do not substitutewith any other Glass Turntable.

3. If Glass Turntable is hot, allow to cool beforecleaning or placing in water.

4. Do not cook directly on Glass Turntable.Always place food in a microwave safe dish. The only exception to this is when cookingJacket Potatoes or Auto Program JacketPotatoes.

5. If food or utensils on the glass turntabletouch the oven walls this will cause theturntable to stop moving. It will thenautomatically rotate in the opposite direction. This is normal. Open oven door, repositionthe food and restart.

6. The Glass Turntable can rotate in eitherdirection. The maximum weight that can beplaced on the turntable is 3 Kg (6 lb 10 oz)(this includes total weight of food and dish).

7. While cooking by MICROWAVE the turntablemay vibrate. This will not affect cookingperformance.

8. Arcing may occur if the incorrect weight offood is used or a metal container has beenused accidentally. If this occurs, stop themachine immediately.

Short Cooking TimesAs microwave cooking times are much shorterthan other cooking methods it is essential thatrecommended cooking times are not exceededwithout first checking the food.

Cooking times given in the cookbook areapproximate. Factors that may affect cookingtimes are: preferred degree of cooking, startingtemperature, altitude, volume, size and shape offoods and utensils used. As you become familiarwith the oven, you will be able to adjust thesefactors.

It is better to undercook rather than overcookfoods. If food is undercooked, it can always bereturned to the oven for further cooking. If food isovercooked, nothing can be done. Always startwith minimum cooking times.

Important. If the recommended cooking times are exceededthe food will be spoiled and in extremecircumstances could catch fire and possiblydamage the interior of the oven.

1. Small quantities of food.Take care when heating small quantities offood as these can easily burn, dry out orcatch fire if cooked too long. Always set shortcooking times and check the food frequently.

NEVER OPERATE THE OVEN WITHOUT

FOOD INSIDE.

2. Foods low in moisture.Take care when heating foods low inmoisture, eg bread items, chocolate, popcorn, biscuits and pastries. These can easily burn, dry out or catch on fire if cooked too long. We do not recommend heating foods low inmoisture such as popcorn or poppadoms. This oven has been developed for food use.We do not recommend that it is used forheating non food items such as wheat bags orhot water bottles

3. Christmas Pudding.Christmas puddings and other foods high infats or sugar, eg. jam, mince pies, must notbe over heated. These foods must never beleft unattended as with over cooking thesefoods can ignite. See pages 23-27.

4. Boiled Eggs.Eggs in their shell and whole hard-boiledeggs should not be heated in microwaveovens since they may explode even aftermicrowave heating has ended.

5. Foods with Skins.Potatoes, apples, egg yolk, whole vegetablesand sausages are examples of food with nonporous skins. These must be pierced using afork before cooking to prevent bursting.

6. Liquids.Liquids and other foods must not be heated insealed containers since they are liable toexplode. When heating liquids, eg soup, sauces and beverages in your microwaveoven, overheating the liquid beyond boilingpoint can occur without evidence of bubbling. This could result in a sudden boil over of thehot liquid. To prevent this possibility thefollowing steps should be taken:a) Avoid using straight-sided containers with

narrow necks.b) Do not overheat.c) Stir the liquid before placing the container

in the oven and again halfway through theheating time.

d) After heating, allow to stand in the ovenfor a short time, stirring again beforecarefully removing the container.

e) Microwave heating of beverages can result in delayed eruptive boiling, therefore care should be taken when handling the container.

7. Lids.Always remove the lids of jars and containersand takeaway food containers before youmicrowave them. If you donʼt then steam andpressure might build up inside and cause anexplosion even after the microwave cookinghas stopped.

8. Deep Fat Frying.Do not attempt to deep fat fry in your oven.

Important Information – Read Carefully

13

Page 16: Operating Instructions and Cookery Book Microwave Oven

9. Meat Thermometer.Use a meat thermometer to check thedegree of cooking of joints and poultry onlywhen meat has been removed from themicrowave. If undercooked, return to theoven and cook for a few more minutes atthe recommended power level. Do notleave a conventional meat thermometer inthe oven when microwaving.

10. Paper, Plastic. When heating food in plastic or paper containers, keep an eye on the oven due tothe possibility of ignition. Do not use wiretwist-ties with roasting bags as arcing willoccur.

Do not use re-cycled paper products, egKitchen roll unless they say they arespecifically designed for use in a microwaveoven. These products contain impuritieswhich may cause sparks and/or fires whenused.

11. Reheating. It is essential that reheated food is served“piping hot”.

Remove the food from the oven and checkthat it is “piping hot”, ie steam is beingemitted from all parts and any sauce isbubbling. (If you wish you may choose tocheck the food has reached 72˚C with afood thermometer – but remember do notuse this thermometer inside themicrowave.)

For foods that cannot be stirred, eglasagne, shepherds pie, the centre shouldbe cut with a knife to test it is well heatedthrough. Even if a manufacturerʼs packetinstructions have been followed alwayscheck the food is piping hot before servingand if in doubt return your food to the ovenfor further heating.

12. Standing Time.Standing time refers to the period at the endof cooking or reheating when food is leftbefore being eaten, ie. it is a rest time whichallows the heat in the food to continue toconduct to the centre, thus eliminating coldspots. See page 11 and 18.

13. Keeping Your Oven Clean. It is essential for the safe operation of theoven that it is wiped out regularly. Usewarm soapy water, squeeze the cloth outwell and use to remove any grease or foodfrom the interior. Pay particular attention tothe door seal area and also the areasaround the microwave feed guide situatedon the right hand side of the cavity wall. Theoven should be unplugged when cleaning.

14. Utensils. Before use check that utensils/containersare suitable for use in microwave ovens.See pages 13-14.

15. Babies Bottles and Food Jars. When reheating babies bottles alwaysremove top and teat. Liquid at the top of thebottle will be much hotter than that at thebottom and must be shaken thoroughlybefore checking the temperature. The lidmust also be removed from babies foodjars, the contents must also be stirred orshaken before the temperature is checked. This should be carried out beforeconsumption to avoid burns. See page 22.

16. Arcing.Arcing may occur if a metal container hasbeen used accidentally or if the incorrectweight of food is used. Arcing is when blueflashes of light are seen in the microwaveoven. If this occurs, stop the machineimmediately. If the oven is left unattendedand this continues it can damage themachine.

17. Maximum Weight on TurntableThe maximum weight that can be placed onthe turntable is 3 Kg (6 lb 10 oz) (thisincludes total weight of food and dish).

Important Information – Read Carefully

Page 17: Operating Instructions and Cookery Book Microwave Oven

Microwave energy has been used in this country to cook andreheat food since early experiments with radar in World WarII. Microwaves are present in the atmosphere all the time, both naturally and from manmade sources.Manmade sources include radar, radio, television, telecommunication links and car phones.

Microwaving Principles

The microwaves cause the water molecules to vibrate whichcauses FRICTION, ie. HEAT. This heat then cooks the food.Microwaves are also attracted to fat and sugar particles, andfoods high in these will cook more quickly. Microwaves canonly penetrate to a depth of 11⁄2 -2 inches (4-5 cm) and as heatspreads through the food by conduction, just as in a traditionaloven, the food cooks from the outside inwards.

In a microwave oven, electricity is convertedinto microwaves by theMAGNETRON

REFLECTION

The microwaves bounceoff the metal wallsand the metal doorscreen.

TRANSMISSION

Then they pass throughthe cooking containersto be absorbed by thewater molecules in thefood, all foods containwater to a more orlesser extent.

How Microwaves cook food

The dish used to cook orreheat the food will get warmduring cooking, as the heatconducts from the food. Evenin micro waving, oven glovesare required!MICROWAVES CANNOTPASS THROUGH METALAND THERE FORE METALCOOKING UTEN SILS CANNEVER BE USED IN AMICROWAVE, FORCOOKING ON MICROWAVEONLY

Foods Not Suitable for

Cooking by Microwave Only

Yorkshire Puddings, Souffles,Double Crust Pastry Pies.

This is because these foodsrely on dry external heat tocook correctly, do not attemptto cook by micro wave.

Foods that require deep fatfrying cannot be cookedeither.

STANDING TIME

When a microwave oven isswitched off, the food willcontinue to cook byconduction – NOT BYMICROWAVE ENERGY.Hence STANDING TIME isvery important in microwaving, particularly for dense foodsi.e. meat, cakes and reheatedmeals (Refer to page 11).

Boiled Eggs

Do not boil eggs in yourmicrowave. Raw eggs boiledin their shells can explodeand cause serious injury.

General GuidelinesSTANDING TIME

Dense foods e.g. meat, jacket potatoes andcakes, require standing time (inside or outsideof the oven) after cook ing, to allow heat to finishcon ducting to cook the centre completely. Wrapmeat joints and jacket potatoes in aluminiumfoil while standing. Meat joints need approx. 10-15 minutes, jacket potatoes 5 minutes. Otherfoods such as plated meals, vegetables, fishetc require 2-5 minutes standing. If food is notcooked after standing time, return to the ovenand cook for additional time. After defrostingfood, standing time should also be allowed. Seepages 17-19.

Small quantities cook faster than largequantities, also small meals will reheat morequickly than large portions.

Foods cook more quickly and evenly if spacedapart. NEVER pile foods on top of each other.

MOISTURE CONTENTMany fresh foods e.g. veget ables and fruit, varyin their moisture content throughout the season, particularly jacket potatoes. For this reasoncooking times may have to be adjusted. Dryingredients e.g. rice, pasta, can dry out duringstorage so cooking times may differ.

DENSITY

Porous airy foods heat more quickly than denseheavy foods.

CLING FILM

Cling film helps keep the food moist and thetrapped steam assists in speeding up cookingtimes. Pierce before cooking to allow excesssteam to escape. Always take care whenremoving cling film from a dish as the build-upof steam will be very hot.

The skin or membrane on some foods willcause steam to build up during cooking. Thesefoods must be pierced or a strip of skin shouldbe peeled off before cooking to allow the steamto es cape. Eggs, potatoes, apples, sausagesetc, will all need to be pierced before cooking.DO NOT ATTEMPT TO BOIL EGGS IN THEIRSHELLS.

Cover foods with microwave cling film or a lid.Cover fish, vegetables, cas seroles, soups. Donot cover cakes, sauces, jacket potatoes orpastry items.

General Guidelines

SHAPE

Even shapes cook evenly. Food cooks betterby microwave when in a round container ratherthan square.

STARTING TEMPERATURE

The colder the food, the longer it takes to heatup. Food from a fridge takes longer to reheatthan food at room temperature. Foodtemperature should be between 5 and 8°Cbefore cooking.

LIQUIDS

All liquids must be stirred before, during and

after heating. Water espe cially must be stirredbefore and during heating, to avoid eruption.Do not heat liquids that have previously beenboiled. DO NOT OVERHEAT.

TURNING AND STIRRING

Some foods require stirring during cooking.Meat and poultry should be turned after half thecooking time.

ARRANGING

Individual foods e.g. chicken portions or chops, should be placed on a dish so that the thickerparts are towards the outside.

CHECKING FOOD

It is essential that food is checked during andafter a recommended cooking time, even if anAUTO PROGRAM has been used (just as youwould check food cooked in a conven tionaloven). Return the food to the oven for furthercooking if necessary.

DISH SIZE

Follow the dish sizes given in the recipes, asthese affect the cook ing and reheating times. Aquan tity of food spread in a bigger dish cooksand reheats more quickly.

CLEANING

As microwaves work on food particles, keepyour oven clean at all times. Stubborn spots offood can be removed by using a brandedmicrowave spray cleaner, sprayed onto a softcloth. Always wipe the oven dry after cleaning.

18

Page 21: Operating Instructions and Cookery Book Microwave Oven

When unsure that a cookingcon tainer is suitable for use inyour microwave, check by thefollow ing test:1. Fill a microwave safe

measur ing jug with 300ml(1⁄2pt) cold water.

2. Place it on the turntablealong side the dish to betested. If the dish you aretesting is a large dish, thenstand the measur ing jug ontop of the empty dish.

3. Heat on HIGH power for1 minute.

Result

If the dish is suitable for micro -waving, it will remain cool, whilst the water in the jug willbegin to feel warm. If thetesting dish feels warm, do notuse as it is obvious lyabsorbing microwave energy.

N.B. This test does not applyto plastic or metal based con tainers e.g. Le Creuset®

style dishes, which should notbe used as they are cast ironcovered with enamel.

Containers to use

OVEN GLASS

Glass that is heatresistant e.g. Pyrex®,is ideal. Do not use delicateglass which may crackdue to the heat fromthe food. Do not uselead crystal which maycrack or arc.

CHINA AND CERAMIC

Glazed china plates, saucers, bowls, mugsand cups can be usedif they are heatresistant. Porcelainand ceramic are alsoideal. Fine bone chinashould only be usedfor reheating for short

periods, otherwise the change in tempera turemay crack the dish or craze the finish. Do notuse dishes with a metal rim or pattern. Do notuse jugs or mugs with glued handles, since theglue can melt in a microwave.

POTTERY, EARTHENWARE,

STONEWARE

PLASTIC

Many plastic containers are designed formicrowave use. Only use Tupperware®

containers if they are designed for microwaveuse. Do not use Melamine as it will scorch. Donot use plastic for cooking foods high in sugar orfat or foods that require long cooking times e.g.brown rice. Never cook in margarine containersor yogurt pots, as these will melt with the heatfrom the food.

PAPER

Plain white kitchen paper (kitchen towel) canbe used for covering blind pastry cases and forcover ing bacon to prevent splattering ONLYUSE FOR SHORT COOKING TIMES. NEVERRE-USE A PIECE OF KITCHEN TOWEL. Avoidkitchen paper containing manmade fibres. Check that branded re-cycled kitchen towel isrecommended for microwave use. Do not usewaxed or plastic coated cups as the finish maymelt in the oven. Greaseproof paper can beused to line the base of dishes and to coverfatty foods. White paper plates can be used forSHORT RE HEATING TIMES.

WICKER, WOOD, STRAW BASKETS

Do not use these items in your microwave. With continued use and with prolongedexposure they will crack and could ignite. Donot use wooden dishes in your microwave.

CLING FILM

Use microwave cling film to cover food that isto be reheated, or cooked, taking care to avoidthe film being in direct contact with the food.

ALUMINIUM FOIL

Small amounts of smooth aluminium foil can beused to SHIELD joints of meat duringdefrosting and cooking. As the microwavescannot pass through the foil this prevents theshielded parts from overcooking oroverdefrosting. The foil must not touch thesides or roof of the oven, as this may causearching and damage your oven.

ROASTING BAGS

These are useful when slit up one side to tent ajoint of meat when roasting by power and time.Do not use the metal twists supplied.

BreadThis program is suitable for small items which are required for immediate use, they may feel warmstraight after defrosting. Loaves can also be defrosted on this program but these will requirestanding time to allow the centre to thaw out. Standing time can be shortened if slices areseparated and buns and loaves cut in half. Items should be turned halfway during defrosting. THISPROGRAM IS NOT SUITABLE FOR CREAM CAKES OR DESSERTS e.g. cheesecake. Seedefrosting charts on page 19 for standing times.

Meat Items (mince/chops/chicken portions)It is necessary for mince to be broken up frequently during defrosting and this is best carried out ina large shallow dish.THIS PROGRAM IS NOT SUITABLE FOR SAUSAGES, these can be defrosted manually usingDefrost power and time. Chops and chicken portions should be arranged in a single layer andturned frequently during defrosting. See defrosting charts on page 19 for standing times.

Meat Joints / Whole ChickensWhole chickens and meat joints will require shielding during defrosting especially if it is aparticularly fatty piece. This is to prevent food starting to cook on the outside edges. Protect wings, breast and fat with smooth pieces of aluminium foil secured with cocktail sticks. DO NOT ALLOWTHE FOIL TO TOUCH THE WALLS OF THE OVEN. Standing time of at least 1 hour should beallowed for joints after defrosting.

Arrange food in a single layer. Shield chickens and joints ofmeat .

Turn or break up food as soonas possible.

For Best Results:

1. Place foods in a suitable container. Meat joints and chickens should be placed on an upturnedsaucer or on a plastic rack if you have one.

2. Check food during defrosting, as foods vary in their defrosting speed.3. It is not necessary to cover the food.4. Always turn or stir the food especially when the oven “beepsʼʼ. Shield if necessary (see point 6).5. Minced meat, chops and other small items should be broken up or separated as soon as

possible and placed in a single layer.6. Shielding prevents food cooking. It is essential when defrosting chickens and joints of meat.

The outside thaws out first, so protect wings/breast and fat with smooth pieces of aluminium foilsecured with cocktail sticks.

7. Allow standing time so that the centre of the food thaws out. (Minimum of 1 hour for joints ofmeat and whole chickens).

Cooking and Reheating Guidelines

Most foods reheat very quickly in your oven by HIGH power.Meals can be brought back to serving temperature in justminutes and will taste freshly cooked and NOT leftover.Always check food is piping hot and return to oven ifnecessary.

As a general rule, always cover wet foods, e.g. soups, casseroles and plated meals.

Do not cover dry foods e.g. bread rolls, mince pies, sausagerolls etc.

The charts on pages 23-27 show you the best way to cookor reheat your favourite foods. The best method depends onthe type of food.

Remember when cooking or reheating any food that itshould be stirred or turned wherever possible. This ensureseven cooking or reheating on the outside and in the centre.

When is food reheated?

Food that has been reheated or cooked should be served“piping hot” i.e. steam should be visibly emitted from allparts. As long as good hygiene practices have been followedduring the prepa ra tion and storage of the food, then cookingor reheating presents no safety risks.

Foods that cannot be stirred should be cut with a knife totest that they are adequately heated throughout. Even if amanufac tur erʼs instructions or the times in the cookbookhave been followed, it is still important to check the food isheated thoroughly. If in doubt, always return to the oven forfurther reheating.

If you cannot find the equivalent food in the chart thenchoose a similar type and size listed and adjust the cookingtime if necessary.

PLATED MEALS

Everyoneʼs appetite variesand reheat times depend onmeal contents. Dense itemse.g. mashed potato, shouldbe spread out well. If a lot ofgravy is added, extra timemay be required. Placedenser items to the outsideof the plate. Between 4-7mins. on HIGH power willreheat an average portionDo not stack meals.

CANNED FOODS

Remove foods from can andplace in a suitable dishbefore heating.

SOUPS

Use a bowl and stir beforeheating and at least oncethrough reheat time andagain at the end.

CASSEROLES

Stir halfway through andagain at the end of heating.

MINCE PIES - CAUTION

CHRISTMAS PUDDINGS

AND LIQUIDS - CAUTION

REMEMBER even if the pastryis cold to the touch, the filling willbe piping hot and will warm thepastry through. Take care not tooverheat otherwise burning canoccur due to the high fat andsugar content of the filling.Check the temperature of thefilling before consuming to avoidburning your mouth.

BABIES BOTTLES -

CAUTION

Milk or formula MUST be shakenthoroughly before heating andagain at the end and testedcarefully before feeding a baby.

For 7-8 fl.oz. of milk from fridgetemperature, remove top andteat. Heat on HIGH power for30-50 secs.CHECK CAREFULLY.

For 3 fl.oz. of milk from fridgetemperature, remove top andteat. Heat on HIGH power for15-20 secs.CHECK CAREFULLY

N.B. Liquid at top of bottle willbe much hotter than at bottom. The bottle must be shakenthoroughly and tested beforeuse.

WE DO NOT RECOMMENDTHAT YOU USE YOURMICROWAVE TO STERILISEBABIESʼ BOTTLES. If you havea special microwave steriliser weurge extreme caution, due to thelow quantity of water involved. Itis vital to follow themanufacturers instructionsimplicitly.

Take great care when reheatingthese items.

Do not leave unattended.

Do not add extra alcohol.
