BMW MOTORRAD COMMUNICATIONSYSTEM

The BMW Motorrad communication systemenables wireless voice communicationbetween two helmet units on the basis ofthe Bluetooth radio standard. Consequently,it is also possible to connect to otherBluetooth-compatible devices such asmobile phones, MP3 players or navigationsystems. The maximum range over whichdevices can reliably communicate isapproximately 10 metres.

The communication system has been optim-ised for installation in the following BMWhelmets:

system 6 helmetSystem helmet 6 EVOSystem 7 CarbonAirflow helmetGS Carbon helmet

Different installation kits are available for thevarious helmets.

The descriptions and images in theseoperating instructions relate to the

BMW System 7 Carbon helmet. The func-tions described also apply similarly to theother BMW helmets.

The system is non-motorcycle-specific anddesigned to be used by rider and passen-ger on the same motorcycle. Although it ispossible for the riders of two motorcycles tocommunicate with this system, the likelihoodof variations in distance between the twomachines and the possibility of interferencefrom external sources mean that communic-ation could not always be relied on to func-tion as it should.

Interference noise picked up by the wind-protected boom microphone is automaticallysuppressed, making communication fromwithin closed helmets possible, even at highspeeds. However, in open-faced helmets, communication at high speeds is only pos-sible to a limited extent. The microphone should always be posi-tioned as close to the mouth as possible.

BLUETOOTH

Bluetooth is a short-range wirelesstechnology. Bluetooth devices are short-range devices transmitting on the licence-free ISM waveband (Industrial, Scientific,Medical) between 2.402 GHz and 2.480GHz. They can be operated anywhere in theworld without a licence being required.

Note on wireless connections:Although Bluetooth is designed to establishand sustain robust connections over shortdistances, as with every other wireless tech-nology disruptions are possible. Interferencecan affect connections or connections cansometimes fail. Particularly when multipledevices operate in a Bluetooth network, withwireless technology of this nature it is notpossible to ensure fault-free communicationsin every situation.

NOTE ON HEALTH COMPATIBILITY

As the evidence stands, there is no indica-tion that using Bluetooth devices has a neg-ative effect on humans. The transmittingpower of the BMW Motorrad communica-tion system is maximum 2.5 mW; the trans-mitting power of a mobile phone is up to2 W.The ISM waveband used by Bluetooth isdesignated for worldwide use by industry, science and medical technology and, thanksto the low transmitting power, is classed asuncritical in terms of health risks.

DISPOSAL

If you want to dispose of your commu-nication system in future: it is illegal to

dispose of electrical devices as normal do-mestic waste. Please bring the communic-ation system to a collection point for elec-tronic devices for disposal.

CURRENCY

The high safety and quality levels of BMWaccessories are ensured by a process ofcontinuing evolution. Because of this, theaccessory you have purchased may differfrom the information supplied in the oper-ating instructions. Nor can BMW Motorradentirely rule out errors and omissions. Wehope you will appreciate that no claims canbe entertained on the basis of the data, illus-trations or descriptions in this manual.

CONNECTION BETWEEN TELEPHONE,NAVIGATION DEVICE AND HELMET

Connection

Telephone and navigation device cannot beconnected with a helmet with a communica-tion system at the same time. The telephonemust be incorporated in the Bluetooth com-bination via the navigation device to en-able both devices to be used at the sametime. To do so, the navigation device is con-nected with the communication system asdescribed ( 15). In addition, the tele-phone must be connected with the navig-ation device. The navigation device then an-nounces, accepts and ends any phone calls.

CONNECTIONS TO SEVERAL DEVICES

Connection

At any given time, each communication sys-tem can be connected with one of each ofthe following types of device:

Another communication systemAn A2DP (Advanced Audio DistributionProfile) compatible music playback deviceAn HFP/HSP (Hands Free Profile/HandsetProfile) telephone or navigation device

Many mobile phones and navigation deviceshave inbuilt music playback devices. Adevice of this nature connected to acommunication system can be used to playmusic and is therefore classed as a musicplayback device. In this case, no other musicplayback devices can be connected to thehelmet.

Devices no longer in useIf a previously connected device is no longerin use, its pairing entry should be deletedfrom the communication system. Not do-ing so can delay the setup of other availabledevices.

OperationCreate connections as described for theindividual devices.

20 PAIRING

PAIRING

Two Bluetooth devices must detect eachother before they can create a connectionwith each other. This process of mutual de-tection is called "pairing". A device is storedonce it has been detected, meaning thatpairing only has to be carried out for the ini-tial contact. The BMW Motorrad communication systemcan be connected with a maximum of threeBluetooth devices, with each device belong-ing to one of the following three differentcategories:

A second BMW Motorrad communicationsystemAn A2DP-compatible music deviceA telephone or with a navigation device

If a telephone and a navigation device are tobe used, the telephone must be integratedin the connection via the navigation device( 15).

A Bluetooth device which has already beendetected is replaced with a second deviceof the same category due to pairing. If theprevious device is used again, pairing mustbe repeated.

During pairing, a Bluetooth device searchesfor other Bluetooth-capable devices withinits reception area. The conditions that haveto be satisfied before a second device canbe detected are as follows:

The Bluetooth function of the device mustbe activatedThe device must be "visible" to others

Please obtain information on the steps re-quired for this in the operating instructionsof the relevant devices.

Despite the standardisation ofBluetooth and the interoperability

this has created between many devices, there can be no guarantee that all availableBluetooth devices will function correctly.
