Before connecting the appliance to the mains supply, make surethat the rating on the data plate corresponds to the voltage andfrequency of the household supply. This data must correspond inorder to avoid the risk of damage to the appliance. Consult aqualified electrician if in any doubt.

The electrical safety of this appliance can only be guaranteedwhen continuity is complete between it and an effective earthingsystem. It is most important that this basic safety requirement ispresent and tested regularly and, where there is any doubt, thehousehold wiring system should be inspected by a qualifiedelectrician.

Reliable and safe operation of the coffee machine can only beguaranteed if it is connected to the mains electrical supply.

Do not connect the machine to the mains electricity supply by amulti-socket adapter or an extension lead. These do not guaranteethe safety of the appliance (e.g. danger of overheating).

This appliance must not be installed and operated in mobileinstallations (e.g. on a ship).

Unplug the coffee machine from the power supply immediately ifyou notice any damage or smell scorching, for example.

Ensure that the mains connection cable cannot be pinched ordamaged by any sharp edges.

The mains connection cable should not hang down. Someonecould trip over it with the risk of injury and the machine could bedamaged.

Correct use

Danger of burning and scalding on the dispensing spouts! The liquids and steam dispensed are very hot.

Keep well away from the area underneath the spouts when hotliquids and steam are being dispensed.

Do not touch hot components.

Hot liquid or steam could spatter from the spouts. Ensure that thecentral spout is clean and fitted correctly.

Water in the drip tray can also be very hot. Take care whenemptying it.

Please note the following regarding water:

– Fill the water container only with fresh, cold tap water. Hot orwarm water or other liquids could damage the coffee machine.

– Change the water every day to prevent a build-up of bacteria.

– Do not use mineral water. Mineral water will cause seriouslimescale deposits to build up in your machine and damage it.

– Do not use water from reverse osmosis units. The machine couldbe damaged.

Only fill the bean container with roasted espresso or coffee beans.Do not fill the bean container with coffee beans which have beentreated, e.g flavoured or caramelised, or with ground coffee.

Do not fill the bean container with any type of liquid.

Page 13: Operating instructions Coffee maker · – Fill the water container only with fresh, cold tap water. Hot or ... Do not use green (unroasted) coffee beans or mixtures of coffee beans

Warning and Safety instructions

Only use milk without additives. Additives in milk usually containsugar and this will stick to the milk pipework.

If using cow's milk, only use pasteurised milk to prevent a build-up of bacteria in the appliance.

Do not place any alcohol mixtures which are alight underneath thecentral spout. The flames could ignite plastic components and causethem to melt.

Cleaning and care

Disconnect the coffee machine from the power supply beforecleaning.

Clean the coffee machine daily, particularly before using it for thefirst time (see "Cleaning and care").

All parts of the milk system need to be cleaned thoroughly andregularly. Milk contains bacteria which proliferate rapidly withinadequate cleaning.

Do not clean the machine with a steam cleaner or immerse it inwater as this will damage the machine. Steam or water could reachthe electrical components and cause a short circuit.

Avoid spillage on appliance connectors.

Descale the coffee machine regularly depending on the waterhardness level in your area. Descale the machine more frequently inareas with very hard water. Miele cannot be held liable for damagearising from insufficient descaling, the use of incorrect descalingagents or the use of a descaling agent which is not of theappropriate concentration.

Degrease the brew unit regularly with Miele cleaning tablets.Depending on the natural oil content of the coffee used, the brewunit can become blocked quite quickly.

Used coffee grounds should be disposed of with the organicrubbish or on the compost heap. Do not empty them down the sink,as they could block it.

The coffee has been too coarselyground if:

– Espresso or coffee flows into the cuptoo quickly.

– The crema is very pale and uneven.

Set a finer grinder setting.

The coffee has been too finely groundif:

– Espresso or coffee only trickles intothe cup.

The amount of coffee is too low if

– espresso or coffee flows into the cuptoo quickly

– the crema is very pale and uneven

– the espresso or coffee lacks body.

Increase the amount of coffee so thatmore ground coffee is brewed.

The amount of coffee is too high, if

– espresso or coffee flows into the cupvery slowly

– the crema is dark brown

– the espresso or coffee tastes bitter.

Decrease the amount of coffee so thatless ground coffee is brewed.

Useful tip: If the coffee is too strong foryou or it tastes bitter, try a different typeof bean.

Brewing temperatureThe ideal brewing temperature willdepend on

– the type of coffee being used

– whether an espresso or a coffee isbeing made, and

– the altitude of the region.

Useful tip: Not all types of coffeetolerate high temperatures. Severaltypes are sensitive to hightemperatures, resulting in an impairedcrema and taste.

Pre-brewing ground coffeeWhen the pre-brewing function isswitched on, the freshly ground coffeeis first moistened with a little hot water. Then the remaining water is forcedthrough the moistened coffee at highpressure. This helps release the flavourof the coffee.

You can set pre-brewing for a normallength of time or an extra long length oftime. Alternatively, you can switch offthe "Pre-brewing" function. The machine is supplied with the "Pre-brewing" function switched off.

Coffee grounds havesettled on the lid of thedrip tray and in theinterior around the brewunit.

This is not a fault. The movement of the brew unit during the brewingprocess can cause some ground coffee to fall aroundit. The type of beans used, the fineness of the groundcoffee and the amount of coffee ground also affectthe amount. Important: Clean the interior of thecoffee machine regularly to prevent mould etc.

Electrical connection

73

Before connecting the appliance, makesure that the connection data on thedata plate (voltage and frequency)match the mains electricity supply. This data must correspond in order toavoid the risk of damage to theappliance. Consult a qualifiedelectrician if in any doubt.

The connection data is given on thedata plate. The data plate can be seenon the left-hand side when the drip trayis pulled out.

The machine is supplied with a mainscable with moulded plug for connectionto a 50 Hz 220-240 V supply.

The coffee machine must be connectedto the mains supply via a suitableswitched socket with earthing contact.Connection must comply with nationaland local safety regulations.

Do not connect the machine to aninverter such as those used with anautonomous energy source, e.g. solarpower. When switched on, peak loadsin the system can cause the safetyswitch-off mechanism to be triggered. This can damage the electronic unit.

The machine must not be used with so-called energy saving plugs. Thesereduce the amount of energy suppliedto the machine, causing it to overheat.

If the connection cable is faulty, it mayonly be replaced by a qualifiedelectrician in order to avoid a hazard.
