The Miele 2 Phase system
The Miele 2 Phase system uses a basedetergent (UltraPhase 1) and adetergent enhancer (UltraPhase 2). Inorder to achieve optimum results, theagents are dispensed separately duringthe wash process. The 2 Phase systemcleans both white and coloured textilesthoroughly. UltraPhase 1 andUltraPhase 2 single use cartridges areavailable to order from Miele or via theinternet at www.miele-shop.com (seeend of this booklet for contact details).
Liquid detergent/Fabric conditioner
Refillable TwinDos containers arerequired for liquid detergent and/orfabric conditioner. These are availableto order from Miele or via the internet atwww.miele-shop.com (see end of thisbooklet for details).
How TwinDos works
Automatic detergent dispensing for awash cycle is activated via the Dos sensor.

General problems with the washing machine
Problem Cause and remedy
The machine shakesduring the spin cycle.
The machine feet are not level. Level the machine and adjust the feet correctly.
The laundry has notbeen spun properly andis still wet.
The machine detected an imbalance during the finalspin cycle and reduced the spin speed automatically. Include both large and small items in the load as
this will give better distribution during spinning.
Strange pump noisescan be heard.
This is not a fault. These slurping noises occur at the end of the pumpsequence as a normal part of operation.
Large amounts ofdetergent residueremain in the detergentdispenser drawer.
The water pressure is too low. Clean the water inlet filter. It may be useful to select the Water plus option.
Powder detergent used in conjunction with watersofteners tends to become sticky. In future, add washing powder into the dispenser
drawer first, and then add the water softener.
Fabric conditioner is notcompletely dispensedor too much waterremains in the compartment.
The siphon tube is not correctly positioned or isclogged. Clean the siphon, see "Cleaning and care -
Cleaning the detergent dispenser drawer".
At the end of theprogramme there is stillliquid in the capsule.
The small pipe in the detergent dispenser drawer ontowhich the capsule is placed is blocked. Clean the small pipe.

An unsatisfactory wash result
Problem Cause and remedy
Liquid detergent doesnot give the requiredresult.
Liquid detergents usually contain no bleachingagents. They do not remove fruit, coffee and teastains. Use the Miele 2 Phase System. The targeted
addition of UltraPhase 2 during the wash processremoves stains effectively.
Use a general purpose powder detergentcontaining a bleaching agent.
Grey, greasy particlescling to washed laundry.
Insufficient amounts of detergent were used to breakdown the particles of grease in heavily soiled laundry. Use more detergent. Before washing the next load, run the Maintenance
wash using Miele machine cleaner or a powderdetergent.
White residues whichlook like powderdetergent are seen ondark textiles afterwashing.
The detergent contained compounds (zeolites) to aidwater softening which are not soluble in water. Thesehave ended up on the laundry. Try and brush off the residues with a soft brush
once the laundry is dry. Wash dark textiles using a detergent which
contains no zeolites. Liquid detergents usuallycontain no zeolites.
Use the Dark garments / Denim programme fordark coloured laundry.

Installation surfaceA concrete floor is the most suitableinstallation surface for a washingmachine, being far less prone tovibration during the spin cycle thanwooden floorboards or a carpetedsurface.
Please note:
The machine must be level andsecurely positioned.
To avoid vibrations during spinning, the machine should not be installedon soft floor coverings.
If installing on a wooden joist floor:
We recommend a plywood base atleast 59 x 52 x 3 cm). The baseshould span several joists and bebolted to the joist and not only thefloorboards. Check for the presenceof pipes and cables first.
Tip: If possible, install the machine in acorner, as this is usually the most stablepart of the floor.
There is the danger of thewashing machine moving aboutduring spinning and falling off aplinth. For this reason, if the machine isinstalled on a raised plinth (concreteor brick), it has to be secured againstslippage using an MTS floor/plinthmounting kit (available from Miele).
Transporting the washingmachine to its installation site
Make sure the fixings at the backof the lid are secure.Otherwise there is a danger of the lidbeing pulled off when carrying themachine. Before carrying the machine checkthat the lid is secure where itprotrudes at the back of themachine.
Carry the washing machine by thefront feet and the protruding lid at theback.
Removing the transit bars
To remove the left and right covers
1. Pull on the attached stopper,
2. then use a screwdriver to release thecatches at the top and bottom.
Installation and connection
74
Using the spanner supplied, turn theleft-hand transit bar 90°, then
pull the transit bar out.
Turn the right-hand transit bar 90°,then
pull the transit bar out.
Installation and connection
75
To avoid the risk of injury, theholes for the transit bars must becovered after the transit bars havebeen removed.
Plug the holes with the plastic capsas illustrated.
Secure the transit bars to the back ofthe washing machine. Make sure thetop catch is located above the holder.
The washing machine must notbe moved without the transit bars inplace. Store them as shown or keepthem in a safe place for future use. They must be re-fitted if the machineis to be moved again (e.g. whenmoving house).
Re-fitting the transit barsRe-fitting is carried out by reversing theprocedure.
Installation and connection
76
Levelling the machineThe washing machine must standperfectly level on all four feet to ensuresafe and proper operation.
Incorrect installation may increaseelectricity and water consumption andmay cause the machine to move about.
Screwing out and adjusting the feet
The four adjustable screw feet are usedto level the machine. All four feet arescrewed in when the machine isdelivered.
Using the spanner supplied turncounter nut 2 in a clockwise direction. Then turn counter nut 2 together withfoot 1 to unscrew.
Use a spirit level to check that thewashing machine is standing level.
Hold foot 1 securely with a pipewrench. Turn counter nut 2 againusing the spanner supplied until it sitsfirmly up against the housing.
All four counternuts must befirmly up against the housing. Pleasealso check this for the feet which didnot need adjustment. Otherwisethere is a danger of the machinemoving about.

The water protection systemThe Miele water protection systemprotects all parts of the washingmachine from water damage.
The system consists of three maincomponents:
– the inlet hose
– the electronic unit and drainage andoverflow protection
– the drain hose
Inlet hose
– Protection against bursting
The inlet hose is tested to withstandpressure of at least 7,000 kPa.
Electronic unit and washing machinehousing
– SumpAny leaking water is collected in asump in the base of the machine. Afloat switches off the water inletvalves, preventing any more waterfrom flowing into the machine andwater in the suds container ispumped away.
– Overflow protectionThis prevents the washing machinetaking in too much water. If the waterlevel exceeds a certain level, thedrain pump switches in and pumpsthe excess water away.
Drain hose
The drain hose is protected by aventilation system which prevents thewashing machine from being emptiedcompletely.
Installation and connection
79
Connection to the water supplyThe washing machine should beconnected to a mains water supply inaccordance with current local andnational safety regulations. The Germanauthorities do not require it to have anon-return valve as the washingmachine has been designed to complywith DIN regulations.
The machine is designed to operatewith a flow pressure of between 100and 1,000 kPa. If it is higher than1,000 kPa it is essential to fit a pressurereducing valve.
Connection to the mains water supplyshould incorporate a mains stopcockwith ¾" threaded union. The stopcockshould be fitted by a qualified plumber.
The connection point is subjectto mains water pressure. Turn on thestopcock slowly and check for leaks.Correct the position of the washerand union if appropriate.
The washing machine is not suitablefor connection to a hot water supply.
Maintenance
Only use a genuine Miele hose shouldyou ever need a replacement orextension. These are tested towithstand pressure of at least7,000 kPa.
In order to protect the water inletvalve, the two dirt filters (one in theopen end of the inlet hose, the otherin the inlet point in the machine)must not be removed.
Extension hose
Longer hoses 2.5 or 4.0 m in length areavailable from your Miele Dealer orMiele as optional extras.
Installation and connection
80
DrainageThe suds are drained through a drainpump with a 1 m delivery head. For thewater to drain freely, the hose must beinstalled free of kinks. The elbow piecesupplied hooks onto the end of thehose. If required, the hose can be extended toa length of up to 5 m. The necessaryparts can be ordered from Miele.
For a delivery head of more than 1 m(up to a max. of 1.8 m) a replacementdrain pump will need to be fitted. Please contact Miele for advice. If required, the hose can be extended toa length of up to 2.5 m. The necessaryparts can be ordered from Miele.
Drainage options:
1. Directed into a sink or basin:
Please note:
– Hook the hose over the edge andsecure it.
– If the water is pumped into awashbasin, make sure that it candrain away freely. Otherwise thereis a risk of water overflowing or ofsome of the drained water beingsucked back into the machine.
2. Connected securely to a plastic drainpipe with a rubber nipple (there is noneed to use a siphon).
3. Connected securely to a floor gully.
4. Connected securely to a washbasinwith a plastic nipple.
