I am writing this article to you on a Tuesday, just one week from Election Day. This has been such an ugly campaign season, I can hardly wait for it
to be over. Most of us do not relish this year’s choices, but still, I am glad to be an American with the privilege of having a say. In one week, Americans will be flocking to school auditoriums, civic centers and church gymnasiums to cast a vote for the most powerful political leader in the world. As Christian Americans, it is our responsibility to wisely use the freedoms God has given us. Let me share with you a few ways you can be a responsible Christian citizen. (I think I initially adapted this from an article by Dr. Adrian Rogers.)
Pray for our government (1 Timothy 2:1-3). I think our prayers will have a greater impact on the course of our na-tion than even our votes. Remember, God is in control!
Pay for our government (Matthew 22:17-21, Romans 13:6-7). None of us like paying taxes, but look at all the benefits we receive. Be thankful and be honest.
Praise our government (1 Peter 2:17). You may not like every decision our leaders make, but give credit where it is due, even if you didn’t vote for the person in charge.
Participate in our government (Matthew 5:13-16). The most obvious way to participate is to vote. Do you realize how many people in the world don’t have this privilege?
Persuade our government (Matthew 10:18-20). There are times it is appropriate to send letters to congressmen and find other means of respectful and peaceful influence.
Obey our government (1 Peter 2:13-14). The only time a Christian should break the nation’s law is if it’s in direct contradiction to God’s law.
If you agree with me that living in the USA is something to be thankful for, then prove it by being an exemplary citizen. God will be pleased! —Phil Peacock
Hebron Happenings
Broadus Memorial launched our Hebron Campus on Sunday, October 9, 2016. The response from the community was overwhelming! 109 people came out to sing, praise and hear God’s Word. The service began by honoring members of the original Hebron Church. Members came forward and were introduced to the congregation. They shared a little bit about themselves and expressed excitement about the crowd, especially the number of youth and children in attendance. We want to fill this place with a new generation of people so that the place where parents and grand-parents are buried can thrive in the future. The best thing that we can do to honor their legacy is to make this place a house of worship that reaches a new generation for Christ. The music was amazing, blending contemporary cho-ruses and new arrangements of traditional hymns. We featured an acoustic guitar, a mandolin, and a tribal drum which kept rhythm for beautiful vocals led by our Praise Band. After the service, everyone enjoyed lunch and spent time in fellowship. It was great to see old friends catch-up and share memories while making new friends—truly a community coming together. We want the Hebron Campus to be a church for every-one. Our focus is to share the love of Jesus. We want everyone who comes through the doors to come to know Him and have a desire to study His word. We are committed to having age ap-propriate teachings, as well as fun and meaningful activities for all. It is exciting to be part of this new community of faith! Let’s keep on building relationships with our friends and neighbors. —Jeff

“Without worship, we go about miserable.” (A.W. Tozer)
We’ve all experienced weeks when nothing seems to go right. Perhaps it was the inconvenience of the car that wouldn’t start, or that you needed to be in two places at one time. Or, maybe it was hurtful words that were better left unsaid, or an unexpected diagnosis by the doctor. The list of things that can interfere with our joy could go on and on.
In the midst of our struggles it is the worship of our Savior that gives us perspective. Yes, we worship because our Lord de-serves it and expects it. But as we worship, when we remem-ber who Jesus is, our focus shifts. 2 Cor. 4:18 says “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
Please join your Broadus family for worship this Sunday. Fo-cus on being in God’s presence. Allow joy to fill your heart again. As the old hymn says, “Turn your eyes upon Je-sus...and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.”
Carol
