My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? James 2:1-5 ESV
A key theme in the Book of James is "faith," and so it is no surprise to find that this passage begins with mention of "the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ" and ends with mention of those
who are "rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom." Faith is about seeing with the eyes of heaven rather than the eyes of this world. Faith is about seeing things like God does rather
than like humans tend to. Faith is about seeing what would otherwise be unseen. Some of the poorest people I have ever met live in Mexico or in Cambodia. Yet some of these same people
are far richer than me when it comes to faith. Sometimes I hear people say that some poor people are as greedy as some rich people. I suppose that is true -- sin does not discriminate between the rich and poor. And I know some people with a great deal of wealth who are also
rich in faith and generosity. But the poor hold this advantage over those of us who can see fairly well how we will get by: really poor people know that they will make it in life only if God
shows up. This requires that they be rich in faith.
