An encourager may encourage another in important ways and yet
be completely unaware of the significance of his/her actions. In other
words, our capacity to encourage may be much larger than our
awareness of what is actually happening in the relationship.

Midland Christian School, which began at this congregation in 1957, resumed classes on August 14. Classes at Midland Independent School District begin on Monday, August 28. Universal compulsory education, the idea that every child ought to receive an education, no matter how rich or poor their family of origin, no matter their social standing or where their parents came from, is rooted in the Christian religion. Churches have promoted general education, and literacy in particular, for centuries. We owe much to Martin Luther, the 16th Century German priest whose "protests" against the Roman Catholicism helped to trigger the Protestant Reformation. Luther contended for universal education and for translating the Bible into "the language of the people" so that each person could read Scripture for themselves.
I thought of the Christian roots of compulsory universal education when it came to my attention this past week that our congregation had received a check for $1,000.00 from the Movelda E. Rhine Scholarship Trust. Though Tammy Porter discovered that we have received checks from this trust (not always in this large) every year since 1998, it took more digging to discover what Paul Harvey calls "the rest of the story."
An internet search revealed that in 1941 Miss Rhine directed the U.I.L. typewriting and shorthand competition in Maverick County (Eagle Pass), Texas, and that she was teaching business courses in Corsicana, Texas in 1944 (the photo of her is from the 1944 CHS yearbook). North "A" records indicate that Miss Movelda E. Rhine placed membership in 1953, having previously lived in San Antonio. Thus, she seems to have at some point moved on to San Antonio and then to Midland High School, likely teaching business classes in both communities.
I also discovered the obituary of Movelda E. Rhine on the internet. Born in Decatur, Texas, in 1915, she graduated from Decatur Junior College, the University of North Texas, and Texas Women's University. She taught school for 38 years. At her passing, on July 3, 1997, she was a member of the Pearl Street Church of Christ in Denton, Texas. Organizations that she was a member of included the North Texas and Texas Women's Ex-student Association, Denton area Retired Teachers Association, and the Department of Denton Woman's Shakespeare Club. At her passing Movelda Rhine's only surviving relative was a cousin in Fort Worth. So apparently this good woman, who as a single woman clearly lived a full and productive life as a disciple of our Lord, decided to leave a legacy that would bless many others by creating from her estate a scholarship trust. Based on what I have found online, her trust every year distributes thousands of dollars to be used for education purposes.
