Installing the HSP7000 on Windows 2000/XP

This application note shows how to install the HSP7000 printer with a USB Interface on a Windows 2000/XP machine via the OPOS or Windows Printer Driver.

OPOS or Windows Printer Driver? The HSP7000 Installation CD contains both the OPOS and Windows Printer drivers. OPOS, or OlePOS, was developed by leaders in the point of sale industry to create universal device standards for all complying point of sale equipment. The Star Micronics OPOS driver offers full compliance with the OPOS Standard Version 1.8.9. The Windows Printer driver is available only on Windows machines and allows the user to install a Star Micronics printer through the Printers and Faxes folder. The OPOS driver must be installed to use the HSP7000’s MICR Reader functionality. The Windows Printer driver cannot interpret data from the MICR Reader. If the MICR Reader function will not be utilized, the user can choose to install either the OPOS or Windows Printer driver. For directions on installing the Windows Printer driver, skip to page 12.

Installing the HSP7000 with the OPOS Driver 1. Turn the power off to the printer. Insert the HSP7000 Installation CD that was packaged in the same box as the printer into the CDROM drive. If no CDROM drive is available, the contents of the CD can be obtained from the Star Micronics website by visiting the support section of http://www.starmicronics.com.

2. Click “OPOS Driver” from the left hand menu bar.

3. Click “I Accept”.

4. Click “Next”.




5. Enter the User Name and Organization and click “Next”.

6. Select “Complete” setup type and click “Next”.




7. Click “Install”.

8. Click “Finish”. 9. It is recommended that the Hardware and Software Manuals are installed as they contain necessary OPOS commands to bridge communication from the software to the printer. To install the Hardware and Software Manuals, skip to step 9a. To proceed installing the HSP7000 without the documentation, click “Yes” when prompted to restart the PC. Upon restarting, the HSP7000 Configuration Utility will install and appear in the Start Menu. Skip to step 10.




9a. To proceed installing the HSP7000 and the documentation, click “No” when prompted to restart the PC. On the main screen of the HSP7000 Setup Utility, click “Documentation” under the Installation section in the left menu bar.

9b. Click “I Accept”.

9c. Click “Next”.




9d. Enter the User Name and Organization and click “Next”.

9e. Select “Typical” setup type and click “Next”.




9f. Click “Install”.

9g. Click “Finish”. Close the HSP7000 Setup Utility and restart the PC. Upon restarting, the HSP7000 Configuration Utility and documentation will install and appear in the Start Menu. 10. Turn the printer on. Click the Windows Start button and navigate Programs > StarMicronics > HSP7000 > Utility > HSP7000 Configuration Utility. Click to open the Configuration Utility.




11. On the left menu bar of the utility, click on “OPOS” under Application Settings.

12. Click “Add New” button next to the box labeled “POSPrinter”.




13. Select “HSP7000” for the model. Select the port under “Port Type”. In this case, it is a USB Device. Then click “OK”.

14. The HSP7000_1 Device will appear in the POSPrinter Box. Highlight it and click the “Check Health” button.

15. Click the radio button labeled “Receipt” and then the “Check Health” button. A sample receipt with available fonts will print out. Insert a slip into the front of the printer. Click the radio button labeled “Slip” and then the “Check Health” button. The slip portion will print available fonts. If both stations print, the printer is configured correctly. Close the Check Health box by clicking the red X in the upper right hand corner.




16. If using a cash drawer or other peripheral device connected to the printer, click the “Add New” button to the right of the box labeled “CashDrawer”.

17. The Device Name and Port Name will match the printer registration settings by default. Configure the cash drawer as desired. Ensure the cash drawer is plugged into the RJ-13 port on the back of the HSP7000 and then click “OK”. As with the printer registration, highlight the cash drawer device and click the “Check Health” button. A window will pop up. Click the “Check Health” button. If the drawer opens, it has been configured correctly. 18. If using the MICR Reader, click the “Add New” button to the right of the box labeled “MICR”.

19. The Model, Device Name, and Port Name will match the printer registration settings by default. Select the MICR font that will be scanned in the dropdown box labeled “Format”. E13B is the MICR font used in North America. Click “OK”.




20. Highlight the device in the MICR box and click “Check Health”. A window will pop up. Insert a check into the printer and click the “Check Health” button. If the MICR data appears on the screen, the MICR Reader has been configured correctly. This test will only work for a check with real MICR characters. The HSP7000 is now set up to accept OPOS commands from the POS software. Installing the HSP7000 with the Windows Printer Driver 1. Ensure the power is turned off to the HSP7000. Set the printer on the surface upside down so that the bottom metal base is facing up. A small metal plate will be fastened in place to the bottom of the printer. Unscrew this plate to reveal two banks of dip switches. 2. Locate the dip switch bank with ten switches. With the point of a screwdriver or pen, gently push dipswitch 5 down to the off position. 3. Replace the metal plate and screw. Turn the printer right side up. 4. Insert the HSP7000 Installation CD that was packaged in the same box as the printer into the CDROM drive. If no CDROM drive is available, the contents of the CD can be obtained from the Star Micronics website by visiting the support section of http://www.starmicronics.com. 5. Click “Printer” from the left hand menu bar.

On the main screen of the HSP7000 Setup Utility, click “Document” under the Installation section in the left menu bar.

12b. Click “I Accept”.




12c. Click “Next”.

12d. Enter the User Name and Organization and click “Next”.




12e. Select “Typical” setup type and click “Next”.

12f. Click “Install”.




12g. Click “Finish”. Close the HSP7000 Setup Utility and restart the PC. Upon restarting, the HSP7000 Configuration Utility and documentation will install and appear in the Start Menu.

13. Turn the power to the HSP7000 on and plug in the USB cable to the PC. Windows will give a dialog pop up stating Found New Hardware.




14. Click the Windows Start button and navigate Settings > Control Panel > Printers and Faxes. The HSP7000 Receipt driver has been installed automatically. Right click the Star HSP7000 Receipt icon and click Properties.

15. Click on the “Ports” tab and locate the port Windows assigned to the printer. In this case, it is USB001. Take note of this port number as it will be needed later. Click “OK” and close the Printers and Faxes folder. 16. Click on the Windows Start button and navigate Programs > StarMicronics > HSP7000 > Utility > HSP7000 Printer Driver Installer.




17. Select the port the printer is connected to. If using a USB connection, select “USB (Printer Class)”. Click “Next”.

18. Select the same port shown in the Ports tab found in the Printers and Faxes folder. In this case, it is USB001.




19. For full feature support, ensure a check is next to Slip and Validation.

20. If desired, place a check mark next to any receipt printing function to make it the default printer. Click “Install”.




21. A message will appear confirming the printer drivers have been successfully installed. Click “OK”. 22. Click the Windows Start button and navigate Settings > Control Panel > Printers and Faxes. If all three printer functions were installed, “Star HSP7000 Receipt”, “Star HSP7000 Slip”, and “Star HSP7000 Validation” will appear. The HSP7000 is now set up to print from the Windows Printer driver.
